Its considered fashionable to ride in black Lycra and Jog in black running suits particularly at night. Even in daylight wearing black in a vulnerable location like riding or jogging on the road make you less visible. Why not wear hi-vis, be safe not sorry. I have recently seen groups of joggers with red flashing lights on their backs - good idea you might say but they were jogging facing the oncoming traffic, as they should but it was dark and they didn't have any lights to the front - DOH!

"Riding with no lights and in dark clothing" is relatively common in rural areas here in Czech Republic and because it takes too long to say all of it every time we have shortened it to just "ninja cycling". I have seen potentially even worse thing than ninja cycling and that was dark clothing and red light on the front. When you meet someone like that on a narrow road or especially cyclepath your initial instinct is to move to the wrong side (left here, would be right in UK) because for at least a split second you think you are catching u to someone slower. Then you have to correct at the last moment. After some close calls like this I keep my strong front light on even when on cyclepaths no matter how much idiots with no lights or weak lights shout at me because their eyes adapted to the dark don't like it.

When I used to ride a bike (and if I was still able to this would still be my mindset) everyone would understand that it really hurts if it goes wrong while on a bike. There seems to be a cultural shift in mentality (not just cycling, but society as a whole) that it is the problem of someone else if it goes wrong, for example "It is the responsibility of others to look after a cyclist". Sorry to say this, but if you are going to ride against traffic on a 70mph road then you can't expect others to look after you. It doesn't matter what your mode of transport is, you have a responsibility for your own safety as well as expecting others to look out for you...but you can never trust other so we need to take responsibility for our own actions
@Fazer_600

Defensive riding is fundamental for motorcyclists - I dont expect people to look out for me because I don't trust them to. I would have thought the same for cyclists. Have you seen the way some people overtake cyclists, dunno why you'd want those kinds of people to watch out for you.
@Woppettier

I honestly don't believe many serious cyclists really think this way. In most of these clips that show actually dangerous situations (which not all of these clips do) it seems obvious the rider either lacks experience (like the kid blindly following his friends thinking he has right of way), basic traffic insight (riding against the flow on a multiple lane street), or both (the guy flying over his bike)

It's similar to the "I've got right of way!" mentality. The cyclists know that whatever happens, car drivers will be blamed for any mistake they, the cyclists, make. So they behave like this. But what they all seem to forget is that being "in the right" (in the eyes of the law) isn't worth much when you're splattered across the road.

And yet Ashley will still put the onus on the people following the rules to correct the mistakes of others because they're "more vulnerable". 2:25 To be fair the road markings and signs mean you must give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If you look carefully the cyclist was on the roundabout first which meant the driver from the right had to give way to them. However, The Highway Code says to give way to traffic on the right, which isn't exactly what the broken white lines mean.
@shm5547
@shm5547 7 месяцев назад
Yes, this is a bit of a bugbear of mine. Some drivers approach mini-roundabouts far too quickly. If the Audi had emerged at the same speed as the cyclist and not driven over the roundel, then there wouldn't have been an issue. There are some very large roundabouts near me with 70mph dual-carriageways adjoining, that you have no hope of getting across before a car can emerge onto the roundabout carriageway.

3:30 with ChrisMartinEMS is even more scary when you consider the light output of his car's headlights; they're very bright! Not many older cars have headlights as bright with such wide coverage as Chris' car has, could have been a lot different if this situation was with a different driver with worse headlights. Especially if they were to be going faster! You see drivers with headlights pointing directly at the floor or with headlights out. It's not unlikely this cyclist didnt encounter a driver like this on his trip. This is why it's so important you ensure your headlights are aligned ans functioning properly.

If cyclists frequently go the wrong way on the one-way street at 1:51, perhaps this suggests a need for better infrastructure. Cyclist who go the wrong way put everyone in danger. But if several cyclists do it, maybe it’s because the next best route to get where they want to go is too far away? No one is condoning unsafe riding, but perhaps it’s worth asking why so many cyclists are going the wrong way on this particular street.

tbf one of the best things about bikes is that they can actually mingle with pedestrians in a way that cars will never be able to. I get the impression in the Netherlands and other countries cyclists are seen more as slightly faster pedestrians, and the infrastructure seems to allow pedestrians and cyclists to be together. 1. We create laws, regulations and rules to organise large masses of people to make life run more smoothly for everyone. 2. The most efficient use of resources is to apply the law to the majority of cases rather than create a bureaucratic nightmare for every eventuality. 3. Since the 20th century road users have primarily been motorists so the environment has been designed for them. 4. Cyclists are not motorists. Therefore many of the rules the apply to “the road” are actually designed for motorists. Therefore, it is lunacy to expect cyclists to act like cars. For example, one way streets are only like that because cars are too wide to safely have bidirectional travel. However, bicycles are expected to follow these rules despite not taking up half the space as a car. Therefore, from the perspective of a person cycling, a one way sign is nonsense. If you disagree, you are either a) the type of person to blindly follow rules or b) someone who enjoys and wishes to further expand upon car centric urban design.

Re- Riding the wrong way on a one way street. When I cycle to my local pub in the summer, there are several parallel one-way streets, they are narrow, but straight (so visibility isn’t a problem). I actually make the decision to ride the ones that oppose my direction as this seems like the safest thing to do, I can ride in the middle and can clearly see cars coming towards me as opposed to them being behind me. @Ashley what do you think about this argument that breaking the law is valid if it improves safety? @blake-gl4wn

I agree. Cyclist have a “Blatant disregard for the rules are in place to keep us safe”. I think the rules are to maximise space and speed for cars. Make road 10 mph, then could have it 2-way for bikes. “It happens regularly on this street”. Well there must not be a safe and practical alternative.

@AshleyNeal-JustCycling they're roads no one should be moving more than about 10mph, so main reason cycling the wrong way is dangerous is drivers going too fast. Although you could argue the cyclist would see the speeder coming if facing them rather than away. As long as there's enough distance to account for the fact that the pedestrian might theoretically stumble at any moment, it's fine in my book. Them using it to overtake an accelerating car at the merge that's right after the zebra crossing is an entirely different level of dangerous, though.

@@j2w1_lub You obviously don't know your Highway Code or your motoring law, and should perhaps return your driving licence for cancellation. The 'overtaking rule' on pedestrian crossings doesn't apply in this case. Laws relating to overtaking on the zig-zags relate to motor vehicles only. Motorists can also overtake cyclists in the zig-zag area IF the crossing is clear, but they can't overtake other motor vehicles. Somewhat similarly, cyclists can overtake motor vehicles in the same area and don't commit an offence because they are not using a motor vehicle. They are, however, obliged to stop for pedestians. My wife has the misfortune to need a guide dog. In the last few years she has been ridden into by cyclists on 2 occasions, both times the cyclists were on the pavement, both times it left her very shaken up. Both times the cyclist failed to stop to see if she and her guide dog were ok. Another huge issue is the people who are so transfixed on their phone that they walk straight into her. Indeed on the most recent occasion the woman who walked into her exclaimed "are you blind" before realising she was. At least this individual apologised, which is most unusual.

As someone who cycles on the footpath, and uses phone whilst cycling - both legal where I live - this is a useful post. If I was near a pedestrian (or other hazards) I’m fairly sure I’d stop to use my phone. But I’ll be double aware in future, including checking dogs. I think that cycling while using a mobile phone - especially as done by some riders in this video - is technically illegal, even if the use of a mobile phone is not explicitly referred to by law. I refer to the Road Traffic Act, 1988, Part 1, Sections 28 and 29: 28 Dangerous cycling. (1)A person who rides a cycle on a road dangerously is guilty of an offence. (2)For the purposes of subsection (1) above a person is to be regarded as riding dangerously if (and only if)- (a)the way he rides falls far below what would be expected of a competent and careful cyclist, and (b)it would be obvious to a competent and careful cyclist that riding in that way would be dangerous. (3)In subsection (2) above “dangerous” refers to danger either of injury to any person or of serious damage to property; and in determining for the purposes of that subsection what would be obvious to a competent and careful cyclist in a particular case, regard shall be had not only to the circumstances of which he could be expected to be aware but also to any circumstances shown to have been within the knowledge of the accused. 29 Careless, and inconsiderate, cycling. If a person rides a cycle on a road without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road, he is guilty of an offence.

The importance about having bicycle lights is something I've learnt well. I have 5 lights on my bike, 2 basic reflective lights that the bike came standard with, one normal rear red light, another red rear light that flashes for certain situations and a front light that reacts like my cars dynamic LEDs headlights for the conditions. I also have a side mirror attached to the right to check for overtaking vehicles as theres a lot of lorries where I live and the countryside can be sometimes risky at 60mph. I also wear what's needed for protection such as high Vis clothes and a helmet and camera or dash cam. I do also think many cyclists do need to take more care. Cyclists in one-way streets: this is a funny thing to see happening in other countries, as in the netherlands the one-way rule never applies to cyclists. and in most cases you can ask yourself: why would they not be exempted? There is often enough space for them to carry on in both directions, even with cars in one direction. and it promotes the use of a bicycle over a motor vehicle since you can more easily cross through neighborhoods without having to follow one-way rules. In the situation of that street in the clip, I would almost suggest the local government to impose a parking ban on one side of the street only.

They usually have a sign post showing a cycling contra-flow, and these don't appear to have that.

Haven’t been out on the bike since last August following an unfortunate hospital acquired injury which has left me with a weakened left arm. When I am on the bike following the Highway Code is important and using what got etched into my brain when I passed my advanced driving course when cycling. It annoys and upsets in equal measure when other cyclist ignore the rules of the road. I live on a one way street with very clear no entry signs! Cyclist, cars and vans on a daily basis! It’s been one way almost 20 years! Lights and reflectives at night are lifesavers, although I have seen the cyclist dressed all in black, on a black bike with the only light from the phone held to their face! If you’re in control of forward motion, you’re not on the phone, including walking!

Not going to say people shouldnt stick to the rules but i do have a question. Is it ever or often safe and non-disruptive for cyclists to cycle down a one way street? My gut tells me that it probably isnt a problem although if it where to be official it would need to be marked so everyone was on the same page.

What’s with the constant "toxic cycling community" references? I have always liked your fair and impartial analysis. The world has enough stereotypes without creating more. Yes X has community that cannot reflect on what they share and accept responsibility for defensive cycling. The responsible cyclists are being punished on the roads for the vine/mikey backlash. Please don’t fuel more hatred

I’m not even sure how “toxic” someone riding a 15kg zero emission vehicle can be. These “toxic cyclists” try to justify going through red lights when they feel it’s safe? I don’t go through red lights. I don’t like it when cyclists do. But there’s nothing outstandingly toxic about it, in comparison to general road use. The online abuse and death threats from drivers? Punishment passes. Throwing bottles. Rolling coal. What’s the value of banging on about “toxic cyclists”.

@@blake-gl4wn like you, I cycle responsibly, but you dont have to go far into the comments of any video to see an utter contempt for cyclists from some drivers and you feel it out on the roads. There are cyclists on twitter that fail to accept any responsbility for their own safety and Ashley has been quite critical of some of these people, I think this is what he refers to. I question anyone with a financial interest in anything, Ashleys channel has grown considerably, I would hate so think now the channel has become more about views than road safety, its dangerous to appeal to the anti vine and cyclingmikey community, thats not going to have a positive message.

Ashley, genuine question, are cyclists subject to the same speed limits as other road users?

No

Not expected to have an instrument to measure their speed is part of the reason.

I was doing 50kmh plus in a 20mph zone (In wales) on a bike, and an Audi A3 still overtook Me, into a blind bend, now that is what I call toxic driving!!! Cyclists - drivers - pedestrians, they are all just people, and the way they behave is very complex. Lumping all those and their choice of transport into binary groupings (all cyclists in Lycra are bad for example) is not a positive move in my opinion. @@AshleyNeal-JustCycling

nope but it can fall under another law, careless for dangerous and they have big fines careless up to £1000 and dangerous up to £2500 so if they at a speed what could be considered any those then the answers yes but not a speeding fine it fall under other rules / laws careless or dangerous

So many riding at night without lights near me and many are on the pavements. But due to the state of the roads it's probably safer for them. Crazy though how many cyclists put themselves and others in danger without a thought, but then expect others to keep them safe. One can only imagine what they like behind the wheel of a car.

I will dismount and stand on the pavement (if the traffic engineers are thoughtful enough to have provided one, as they don't on many rural routes, can afford a car path, but not a footpath, y'know) if I need to take a phone call.

we all get it wrong, but yeah these cyclists give good cyclists a bad name so they should be reprimanded for failing the basics cyclists can be fined for passing a red light now and rightly so

2:17 “the rules to keep you safe” - uh Ashley, no, that is not how traffic rules work, unless you are in the Netherlands. The rules are often to keep driving a car convenient *at the expense of the safety of cyclists* . Don't confuse moral judgements with judgements about danger. Rule number one is “don't get dead”. Beats any traffic rule. That said that is a pretty sketchy place to go the wrong way. It is too narrow between those parked cars. Drivers going downhill with poor visibility? Not good. A few people mentioned Belgium or the Netherlands, but over there if a street is really narrow, cycling against the direction *will* be prohibited. (Note the parked cars, and the lack of a bike lane. Right there, convenience over safety)

3:28 That was a good save, and the cyclist was shockingly idiotic, but Chris was not driving at a speed at which he could stop well within the distance he could see was clear - what if there were pedestrians or animals?

5:12 I get what you’re saying but I would find it ridiculous if such a fine wasn’t rescinded on appeal
