Cycling Group Ride Breakdown & Tactics (Cycling Tips)

The Vegan Cyclist hits a fast group ride and uses the go pro to get the cycling footage and uses Garmin Virb for power meter overlays. About 30 cyclists were on this group ride and I had already done two separate workouts with high intensity intervals.
My goal for this large cycling group ride was to recreate a race environment with fatigue in my legs. Got out sprinted at the end but the whole cycling workout was killer.
Is this description sound weird? Max from youtube told me make it this way...

What gearing do you use, and what grade are you pushing 600 watts up at? Doesn't look steep compared to the climbs im used too but the camera can be deceiving. I am curious because i am thinking of changing my gearing and i am watching and asking to see what other riders who post are using and on what terrains. thanks!

I live in just north of you in Palm Beach Gardens/Jupiter area and see the same thing. I roll up to B+ group rides on my 2004 Specialized Roubaix (yes 2004) I bought used for $550.00 in 2017 when I started seriously riding....everyone else has 5K plus bikes and all the kit. By the end of the ride I'm right up in the front group 80% of the time depending on my energy level- and yes I take my pulls at the front. Yes the bike helps- but you still gotta mash the pedals to make it move.

30 dudes is a big ass group ride. The only rides in my club (which is a fairly large club near New York City) that come to that size are beginner rides to teach basic group skills, or shop rides which pull in everybody who ever got a bike or a tune up there, regardless of skills. The only time we get 30 fast guys together is for that same shop's Friday Night race series in the summer.

The last time I rode did the World Champions ride I threw up at the turn around. The pace is ridiculous from beginning to end. Sadly 9 out of 10 there's a head wind coming back.
@bxckdoor9113
@bxckdoor9113 4 года назад
So I assume this was a pure workout / race ish vibe ? Not actually a proper group ride because to my knowledge being from London, a group ride means working in a team at the same pace to be the most efficient as possible as a pack. Nonetheless, it still looked like a cool race group / ride and still fun.
@aaronlampman
@aaronlampman 7 лет назад
Are speeds faster while in a group ride than compared to riding alone? I've never been in a group ride but in an all out sprint I can barely hit 28mph and that seemed like an average speed here. Am I just slow?
@TheVCAdventures
@TheVCAdventures 7 лет назад
LOL, no bro, your not slow. Thats exactly what I thought when I was riding solo. I heard someone say they held 22mph for an hour and LITERALLY did not believe them. The draft in a group like this is MAJOR! I did a 75 min crit where we avg 29mph!!! WHAAAT! To out that into context, my BEST ever TT is 26mph for 16miles and my best solo on a road bike is maybe 24mph for an hour.
@Einhander49
@Einhander49 7 лет назад
The Vegan Cyclist bro, out here in west Texas you can hit 29+ mph for at least 2 hours if conditions are right. motorist on the main highway wonder if I'm on a motorcycle when they see me roll that fast.

why are you not riding on the road, this is what newbie cyclists do, that solid line marks the edge of the carriageway, and the strip of tarmac to the right is not a cycle lane. Many Australian newbie chain gangs do this and it's plain stupid IMHO. on a high speed road like that with that traffic density you'd be safer in the lane and have far more room to go through and off, less likely to have any errant motorist (especially in a tonner) getting too close as they have to change lanes. Think about it.

Neat video. If you're a sadist, like myself, the best part of fast group rides is to purposefully open gaps (especially when it gets fast) and force others to close them. If no one is able to close the gap, snap off and bridge across as fast as possible so no one can follow. Crosswinds are the best environment for this. Happy riding!

Thanks for the video and discussion. I was on a ride mid-summer with a mix of racers and non-racers ranging up cat-2 (I'm approaching 5) on down and my plan was to sit and see how long I could hang with the lead group. I got into that same situation, I would be on a wheel and then I noticed a gap opening, so I get around and fill the gap only to repeat. I did get on the lead group but I did not last long with them. Often times I get dropped cresting hills as well. I was on another ride and I found myself pulling into a climb and I managed to hold on the first time. I sat for a while and then on my first pull through I found myself at the front again into a climb, that time I was toast. I rode solo and then broke the route off to go home (which was my plan).
