I'm in the same boat, all my old cycling friends have fallen away from the sport. I'm still riding and racing despite having lost a good bit of lung capacity to disease. Sometimes the pain is just excruciating from the lack of O2 from my screwed up lungs but I love riding too much to stop.

Roberts Blums No I'm just desperate to hold onto as much lung function as I can , I'm just desperate to hold onto as much of my life as I can. It is so hard and so much work at times to just keep what lung function I've got.

Roberts Blums Okay this is complicated - I have a condition called "Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis." It's an active infection of the lung/lungs by an aspergillus organism( a fungus) and the kicker is I am very allergic to the fungus in my lungs. This allergy to the fungus used to result in violent and severe bronchial asthma attacks. We're talking the kind of asthma attacks that are severe enough to kill you. Ever been suffocated - that's what happens in a bad asthma attack. In addition the fungus infection lead to numerous secondary pnuemonias that resulted in much scar tissue and damage to my bronchial tubes and lungs. This condition went undiagnosed for years. I learned to live with constant pain and diminished lung capacity. The pulmonologists (idiots) missed the diagnosis thinking that I had an allergy to our cats. Finally a good old boy country Doctor from S. Louisiana a graduate of LSU made the correct diagnosis and got me on some pretty powerful anti-fungals bringing the infection under semi-control. But I'll never be cured the fungus is always waiting and sometime it does come back. It addition the fungus will block up the small airways in my lungs and one of the best ways to blow out the obstructions is to ride hard and ride long. So between hard riding and good meds I get to live a kinda normal life, but I'll never be the cyclist I was.
