RaD Episode 11: Cycle Touring Netherlands
In this episode we ride from Elten, Germany to Wageningen (Waga-whaaa?!) in The Netherlands where we spent a week working and visiting with friends yaaaay. The amazing bike paths continued and our week in Wag. 'twas a good time all around!

++The Adventure: We like to travel and we like to cycle..why not combine the two?! We're riding our bikes around a bunch of different places in this world for a year. woohoooo
So far we've ridden in Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium and are currently in Taiwan.

LOL, i allready thought when i saw you on that dangerous road with your bike in the first 2 minutes of the tape "that is not the Netherlands, where do you have to use your bike on the carroad". And then you said that you are now in Holland (in the 2 min timeline) with a small bikelane, but still a bikelane. And i smiled..thats my country. 😉👌

that's not a bike lane, but a 'bike suggestion lane', meant to slow down car traffic. You're definitely allowed to go outside it and cycle two abreast.

Well good to hear it! Was actually going off what I had read in a travel guide and what another Dutch friend had told me about cannabis and the Netherlands. That people picture it as a widespread free-for-all with use throughout but that the rate of locals who actually consume it is in fact quite a low percentage (especially compared to weed tourists in Amsterdam etc. ). Maybe cannabis/hemp culture is thriving there and I just don't know it!

@@radbikeadventure recently the age you are allowed to do a number of things was raised to 18 (like drinking), I think this might also apply to weed. Yes, it has always been believed that the low consuming percentage is because it's not illegal and it's regulated.

Even though I really enjoyed cycling in the Netherlands, in the end I prefer Belgium. Dutch routes are just too organised. Belgium's network is equally impressive but everything has just the right amount of wear :) Also, removing a helmet to fit in...erm I prefer to wear a helmet and not have some road debris fit into my skull in case (however rare) of anything going wrong with the bike.

We'd love to go back and do a trip just in Netherlands and Belgium...maybe spend a month or more riding around all the bike routes. So much to explore there! I love riding with no helmet, so if I'm on a clean, clear bike path/trail with no cars, I'll do it (never while mountain biking though for obvious reasons). I usually don't worry about falling off...plus, typically if you fall off you don't land on your head (usually hip, leg, arm or wrist would take the damage). An endo would be highly unlikely. Also helps to learn how to wipe out safely with minimal impact.

@@radbikeadventure Most important thing is to enjoy yourself. On subconscious level I just can't do it without helmet and I wear it even when going a mile down the road to buy milk. Feels akward without it ;) Stay safe! :)
