This is very, very informative for me personally. I also started road cycling with Shimano R170's (Euro 46) back in 2015 and have since covered around 12000 klms with them, using Ultegra 8000 pedals. I have also had the same knee issues that you alluded to. After several bike fits, etc. & trips to Physio - I now need to wear Velcro knee wraps to "straighten" my knees up when riding. Since using these for the last almost 2 years, my knees have been far less painful. (I even gave up running to protect my knees and took up swimming in lieu of) I have also XC mountain bike ridden seriously since 2012 with Shimano XC50 shoes (Euro 46) on XT pedals. I had no trouble with the MTB riding and my knees. Both my knees began to cause issues around 2018. As far as your foot pain issues, again, similiar for me on my left foot only. Pain on the edge of my foot at the Metatarsal & numbing in my big toe, nothing too horrible - but still there. Again, issues here on the left foot only. I am needing to now get new shoes and like the idea of the SH-RC702's (when they are released in Aus this month), but going to a 47E (wide), thinking this might help remidy the foot pain issue at least... Also, the foot wedges you have there that go in your shoes, where can I buy them and how do I know which way they should tilt or do they all tilt the same way?

Thanks for sharing! My left foot is also the culprit. I’m left leg dominant. Good arch support and a wider stance width helped sort out my knee issues. The new 702’s in wide will be similar to the 902 that I reviewed. I’m hoping they will have more volume. Have you tried ultegra pedals with the 4mm extended spindles and widening your stance? I got the wedges from a specialized shop.the thicker part of the wedge should be under the first metatarsal area( inside the foot)

@@addictcyclist Thanks, yes I had read about the 4mm wider Ultegra's. Thing is I have a brand new pair of standard spindle Ultegra 8000's which Shimano replaced as one of the metal plates fell off my previous 8000's, so I don't want to have dish out another $200AU odd dollars for an extra 4mm unfortunately. Is that what you were referring to as a way to "widen the stance"?

@@aus80srockradio94 yes the longer spindles and pushing the cleats in towards the inside of the shoe.

@@addictcyclist ok cool. Thanks, I have put my Ultegra pedals up for sale & if I sell them, I'll get the 4mm wider spindle ones. And I guess that means bringing the cleats 4mm in?

@@aus80srockradio94 i recommend pushing all the way in and work your way out as you get a sense of how it feels. I also use Ergon cleat alignment tool to make adjustments easy and keep the cleats the same angle as I move the cleats laterally and fore and aft.

Hi (again - I just watched one of your other videos - on lake 241s vs 332's - and left a comment there too!). I have now watched this video - and what you have struggled with seems to have so many parallels to my own issues on the bike. I don't know why, but am left leg dominant on the bike, and have ended up with damage to cartilage in my right knee. Highly suspect related to hips or pelvis imbalance. In any event - I am on a mission to try and diagnose what has caused it -and how to prevent it getting worse. So have been scouring the net, especially bike fitters (like Francis Cade - that you mentioned), and Neil Stanbury in Australia. Looking at everything from cleat placement, hip impingement, shoes, shims, etc etc. Currently rehabbing my right leg to get it stronger, and have a bike fit in 2 weeks with (hopefully) a better expert than before, to try and solve issues. I am ditching my Specialized shoes (after Cade mentioned their non-neutral nature), and am looking to replace. Was considering Lake's (per other video Comment I just left), but have also recently tried some Shimano's. I have feet 108/109mm wide, and tried the 902 regulars but they were far too narrow. Shop didn't have 902 wides, so have been searching to find a pair as reviews sounded good - but your review here has now answered that they will definitely also be too narrow. So - you have saved me that search - thanks. Seems no stock anywhere - so that would have been a tough ask. Whilst in the shop though, they did have a paid of 901 wides, which I tried and that were quite good (despite the colour - is white which I like - but it is like a pearly white - could take a bit of getting used to). And now is see your review here - saying you prefer these 901's over the Lake's and have gone back to them. Please can you confirm through - do you have the 901 regulars or wides? I think you said the Regulars? If so - then I am surprised they were ok for your feet, which you mentioned are 109mm? Would appreciate your thoughts on the matter - ie how roomy they are, and whether you tried the 901 wides and - presumably - they were way too wide/loose? I am not sure the shop I visited had any 901s in regular to try, but if these are good for 108mm wide feet - I may try hunt some down. Thanks again. Cheers from South Africa!

Hey! When I get back from work trip, I will print this out to help me navigate the answer I want to give you. So much to talk about I may just make another video to break it down.

@@RichThomas ok here we go! I have the 901 in regular. If I had the 901 in wide, even better. The 902 are a joke as far as width. I have found that I really like the Sidi wire carbon 2 as of late. I need a flat carbon sole with an upper that allows my foot to fan out. I do not have a wide forefoot across my metatarsals. My foot is wide in the mid foot area. I measure 108 and 109mm wide. The Sidi seem to fit similar to Shimano but I like even more as they are not a wrap around upper like the slipper feeling of Shimano. This allows my foot to fan out under power better and not feel restrictive with a wrap around upper. They also lock in my foot better as well. Almost like a ski boot. I have ridden on trainer for swift races and a few outdoor rides and my feet are happier than ever.

I used to wear s works 7. No go for me. So far Sidi Wire 2 have been best for me. I use dura ace pedals with +4mm spindle length. Ultegra has that option as well.

@@addictcyclist did you just leave the cleat in the middle to create 6mm of Q factor? Or did you just push the cleat as far to outside to bring the shoe closer the bike and just 4mm? I have the pedal system in my shopping cart. I also am i aheavier rider at 190.
