Do you know how steep the gradient is on each side [judging by the noticeable slowing of speed from 3 min 30 secs onwards] ? I too cycle loads during an average week [working in both Manchester and Liverpool] and can clock up anything between 100 and 200 miles a week at least. BUT I have never tried my chances at using the tunnel between Liverpool and Birkenhead in the allowed time slots, chiefly because of (a) the gradient and, more specifically (b) how other drivers would take to seeing a cycle in front of them in what are already pretty narrow lanes inside the Queensway [having had far too many cars for comfort overtaking too closely to me and never leaving enough clearance when passing]. In January 2016 they will be closing the Merseyrail railway loop line under the river and the city centre for re-laying of track - and we will face SIX MONTHS of disruption whereby cyclists will find it very difficult to go about their normal routine due to there being very little provision for them and their bikes to cross the river without serious restrictions.
