steel can be fixed EASY and permanently!

At one point you're right. It makes a lot more sense to lose excess body weight before investing in lighter frames. It's much cheaper and healthier. And you'll be faster.

Harley I totally agree that average riders would have a hard time justifying carbon on the weight and cost factor alone. There are definitely some benefits in the transfer of power on a carbon frame due to the stiffness that can be achieved over steel or alloy. I'm 90Kg and in a sprint there's no comparison in power transfer with a steel or alloy bike. Also, as you eloquently pointed out, carbon has some cons due to the potential for crushing or cracking. However, having had some fun beating up several retired carbon frames, I can tell you that carbon is not as fragile as one might think. Taking a hammer to the frame shows they can be very resilient and somewhat stubborn when trying to break a frame in half. Be careful with your carbon but don't be so afraid as to miss out on some of the benefits of carbon.

I decided to spoil myself with a carbon bike, it's not a question of being pro or amateur, but more a feeling of riding something totally different and enjoying it. Obviously if you can't afford one, but as re succumbing to your riding group visual pressure, that's a different situation altogether.

I used to have steel frames, and I loved them but then I rode on AL frames for almost a decade, but somehow I did not liked it. It was way too harsh and bumpy for me. Now I ride on steel again : cromo gravel frame with carbon fork and I have to admit I would never ever go back to aluminum. If you are not want to use the bike for competitions I recommend the steel! An aluminum frame will never absorb the shocks even with a 700x45 tires likes my modern steel frame does with a 35mm wide tire.

I have a Reynolds steel bike, I know some people use 4130 cromoly, but Reynolds is the best, if you can afford it. 853 or 953

The flaw in Durian’s comments on steel frames is that it’s not like steel tubing manufacturers have sat around and done nothing since the 80’s. Everything he said by comparison would be just as true if he was comparing Columbus SL to Reynolds 953 steel. This doesn’t include the top HSS and AHSS steels developed for the auto industry. Pilot level production of hydroformed AHSS bike frames weighing 900g have been made. People get to hung up on frame materials and bike weight. There is so much more that goes into making a top quality road bike than the materials the frame is made from.

I'll spend my money on steel bikes any day. I never felt safe on carbon, maybe because I've had to many parts break. I went for the Controltech Timania Bars, Stem and Seatpost which was about $900 US total but I feel safe.

Carbon has the edge because it can be manipulated in a million ways to construct a master piece but Construction, material quality and fit matters most and steel, aluminum as well as carbon make great performance machines; each one outside it’s inherent weaknesses!

I have a steel drop bar bike for 2 tracks and heavy gravel riding but I think a nice well made carbon bike is the best for a touring , endurance, light gravel ... anything where comfort and long time on saddle is where they shine ... other than racing of course

Great video! Love carbon. There is difference between carbon bicycles. Some are fragile but very light. Other are durable, and more versatile, ex. touring, every day riding, for Cross, but little havier (same weight aluminium bicycles). Go Trek Emonda ALR if you want lightweight aluminium bicycle.

True , like the checkpoint. It's a condition 2 rated carbon frame made for gravel or touring . It should be better for that environment than say a madone or 16lbs csrbon race bike . I like aluminum, steel , and carbon but nothing is as smooth to ride as a carbon in my opinion

the bikes by themselves? A well designed bike is a well designed bike. Material? Who cares, if it is well designed. BUT the rider who is in better shape and is well trained, and we have well designed machines for both? UNLESS there is a glaring design difference, your fit rider is going to have a ball

I have a Lynsky titanium road bike and I love it. Light like carbon, but much more resilient. It's also a very comfortable bike. I was in a crash years ago and I suffered some injuries, but the Ti frame emerged unscathed. Longevity is another thing. I've been riding it for 10 years now, and I expect to ride it for another 10 years easy. I'm not sure where the "cracks easy" comments are coming from - they've been using titanium for aircraft wings for years...

what about Aluminum?, I have a caad12 and happy with the bike!
@JGstunts22
@JGstunts22 4 года назад
Aluminum is a great budget material. But it is weaker than carbon lol people crap on carbon but you can dent aluminum with a rock and it will crease and eventually inoperable. And cant be fixed really . Where as carbon for a few hundred dollars can be repaired
@shwndh
@shwndh 3 года назад
Nothing wrong with aluminum. It does have a fatigue life but most will never see it in a well made frame. It is more durable than carbon but carbon can be stronger directionally. It’s very rare that an aluminum frame can be dented by a rock and ruined but very common for a carbon bike to fail this way
