Cycling With Dogs! Is Bikejoring As Barking Mad As It Looks?

Dogs and sleds go hand in hand, but what do you do if there's no snow? Bikejoring is the answer, with dogs pulling bikes instead! When we found out about this sport, we had to send Hank to give it a go - is it really as barking mad as it sounds?!

Big thanks to GCN for doing a heartwarming video about our miniscule sport! And it also nailed showcasing the warm family oriented atmosphere that is at the center of it. If only this would be the push that Strava needed to add dogsports (bikejoring, skijoring) so mountainbikers etc. didn`t have to whine when we steal their KOMs...

What sort of distances are raced in this sport? Are the races considered sprint or endurance?
@benhortonben9105
@benhortonben9105 2 года назад
@@garyschnitker6689 in this country only 5k. Unfortunately getting access to areas with enough ground to train for distance is tough as is finding venues. You need permits so you can get insurance incase somthing goes wrong. Abroad they are much longer. They do a 20 mile trek for Nordic breeds but as of yet they don't allow hounds which are specifically bred for sprint racing. As in any sport there is always politics....
@garyschnitker6689
@garyschnitker6689 2 года назад
@@benhortonben9105thanks for the response. I noticed it was stated to be a winter sport. I suppose that warm weather would present a danger to the dogs, especially for longer events. A few years ago in Colorado I came across a young man on a steep trail whose dog had just died of heatstroke. Dogs are so eager to please their owners that they can be at risk if the owner doesn't understand their susceptibility.

Having raced husky's for 30 years, and bike-jored, I've always thought that the power and silent acceleration of the dog(s) is akin to an electric bike/vehicle. Also, once the dog is up to speed, there is no need to pedal. You start to pedal again when the speed drops such as going up a hill..

My daughter (the tiny girl in the film) loves it! I've been racing for 10 years now but had list my mojo. After I started running with my little girl, my mojo came back in a deluge. It really is a family sport 😀 You can compete with any breed bar bracyphalic breed (bulldogs pugs etc) The only thing I'd say is make sure a dog is right for you as a family. It's a big commitment.

I'm using a Kickbike, I don't think I would be comfortable to go out with a bike :D Small tip to anyone wanting to try it out with their dog: you can easily with little to no effort teach the directions while you take your dog for walks. Just say left/right/forward/stop when walking and coming into a corner and so on. Before you know it, the dog can turn where you say it to turn.

We started this by accident 9 yrs ago. Found Alpine Outfitters here in the states. Reedus (English cream golden retriever) loves to run and absolutely loves bike joring. He has a country vet and a city vet. Both agree he is the healthiest patient they see. We bike all the city parks in town and cow trails at the ranch. We adopted the sled dog ques of: Gee for right Haw for left STOP! Hike means GO Easy or slow down Leave it or ON BY Trail…go straight or stick to the trail You can use any words you like just be consistent with the meaning and when. We actually use a 26’ retractor leash as we are not racing. Reedus rarely pulls me. I just try to keep up. Great exercise for both. Hook up your companion (once they understand a few commands) and walk beside the bike while your friend leads the way. Then hop on and try to keep up. It will change your life. Arrivederci y’all from Texas

Thanks GCN for introducing your viewers to this awesome sport. I do this with my husky, although not competitively, and it's become my new favorite hobby ever since I first gave it a try. I love how you and the people emphasized that it's about the bonding experience with the dog and what you can accomplish together as a team rather than racing per se. Besides strengthening the relationship between dog and owner, this also fosters an even temperament, good health, and it often makes the dogs more receptive for training and good behavior at home. You should also look into skijoring, it's a great alternative for the winter. Happy trails to you guys!

I used to ride my bike while I ran my dog who would run 20 km with no effort at all. Number one tip make a leash out of bungee cord so there is some give between the dog and the bike and he doesn't yank the lead and send you head first over the handle bars.
@IanLoughead
@IanLoughead 2 года назад
Buy a proper bungee setup if you want your dog to pull. They aren't that expensive and will be safe for you and the dog. Don't try and DIY one yourself.
@minuteman4199

@@IanLoughead I didn't want him to pull, but if he decided he needed to go in another direction or speed up, he'd pull. and the spring in the bungee would prevent a sudden jerk.

Bikejored with my pointer cross, no competitively, for about 4 years, before he got too old, we both loved it, made dog walking an adventure, you learn so much about your dog, especially when they take a 90 degree turn for a squirrel and you go flying. Neither of us injured so all good. Never raced but watched a few in Sherwood Pine and the dogs just love it. Great to see GCN cover this and hope Hank takes it further, he did well for a first try.

I bikejor year round in interior Alaska with a fat bike and my Alaskan husky, Charley. 4.8" studded tires are great on the winter trails we share with mushers, skijorers, moose, and wolves. My partner has been canicrossing for a while and I've always fancied a go at bikejoring or scooterjoring. It would involve a fourth dog (none of my three can run due to size, age or illness) and a second bike so we've never pulled the trigger. Maybe in the next few years. Please include more bikejoring content. This was great.

Great video, it’s awesome to be able to take your dog with you on your bike adventures so they don’t get left out! There is a sled dog rally up in aviemore at the end of January, maybe we will see you there ;)

Actually tried this last night at FOD with a mates dog and lights. In the dark around Verderers increases the thrill even more! What a buzz. I would highly recommend giving this a go. If you are into going fast and furious - this is for you!

I have discovered bikejoring by accident, because our dog had too much energy for just walking. Now we both enjoy it a lot and it's good to see there are others doing it too.

That looked like so much fun, for the people and the dogs. I wanted to get a dog already when my workload calms down as I go into summer, and now I think I need to get one to try canicrossing. Bikejoring looks like it might require more mountain bike skill than I'll ever have.

my two cents on deciding wether to do canicross or bikejoring: you need healthy joints for canicross as the dog pulling you puts a lot of strain on you: knees, back - you will reach higher speeds than you would be able to without the help of the dog. So you need to build that slowly and with the help of trainers. Bikejoring: unless you plan to race you can go any good trail you want - avoid concrete and asphalt to protect the dog's paws as much as possible. No need to limit yourself to difficult and technical trails - this is done during racing to give an edge to the sport. But if you do it recreationally (which is great fun, too), you decide which trails you use. Also, with bikejoring (much more than canicross) you can train to do more long-distance runs - the distances for racing are only a few miles - where the dog is not running full speed all the time (loping or trotting in between) but you can train up to 20 or 30 kilometers (take breaks inbetween) easily. The energy is different but the fun is the same. And please: while you can train the commands early on, do NOT put your future dog in front of you or a bike before it's at least 18 months old and build pulling weight and distances SLOWLY. And find somebody to help you train - it's always easier to learn with somebody along who knows what he/she's doing.

My previous dog was a Husky Doberman mix. 36kg/80lb of muscle and stoburness! We would drag my big ass at 36km/h without any pedaling. He broke the rope his first day, I had to use a metal wire to attach him to the bike. My current dog is a Husky Saluki (an Arabic breed similar to greyhounds) mix. She's too small to drag me but she's fast AF! I have yet to reach her speed limit!

I've biked, run, and ski-jorred with my Husky... I think she loved it as much as I did.
