@@Borderman47 Or perhaps buy the cyclist one as well...'Do not hold up a long queue of traffic, especially if you are driving a large or slow-moving vehicle. Check your mirrors frequently, and if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass.'

@Forester16 It means that they should be checking their mirrors, and when they are holding up traffic, they should pull over to let the traffic go. This doesn't excuse the car drivers behaviour, but it doesn't excuse the cyclist either.

I have ridden motorbikes for 50 years, I drive a car and a motorhome too. All it takes is for the driver, motorcyclist or cyclist to be aware of what is going on and not to be selfish and stupid.

I'm a keen cyclist as well as a keen motorcyle rider. The cyclist wasn't doing anything wrong, admittedly I'd have probably pulled in for a minute ...but I am also aware from experience that many car drivers would storm past no matter how narrow the road is, leaving very little space and if it wasn't this group of cars, it could be the next one. The camper van was inadvertently giving him a bit of protection.

I'm currently a motorcyclist, a cyclist and a car driver. I also had motorhomes & camper vans for many years and was a truck driver in my working life. We'd all like to have the roads to ourselves and always have nothing in front holding us up, but that aint gonna happen on our busy roads. You just have to suck it up and try to be philosophical about it. Also us bikers can console ourselves that congestion affects us the least. We can get around traffic quickly and filter past queues.

It would appear you encountered two road users who should have stayed at home, the motorhome driver was particularly nervous and didn't know what the right hand pedal is for and a cyclist who probably had his earpods in and was oblivious to all other road users (common problem nowadays)

Morning Dave, the fact that the motorhome wasn’t even attempting to overtake the cyclist, even on the big road, suggests to me that they were with him……just a thought. Other than that, the Motorhome driver was being a 🛎️ end. We have had 3 Motorhome’s, and on roads whereby we couldn’t drive as quickly as others, we would pull in to let others past, it is just the polite thing to do.

I found that highly amusing so cheers for that! The motorhome driver was leaving enough room at junctions for people to turn into roads when there appeared to be enough room. The beige car driver was too close to the back of the motorhome to see around it for a safe overtake. However were more patient than me. I'd have gone a different way to him if I was just on a ride out for pleasure. Or I'd have stopped at a decent viewpoint and given it 5-10 minutes for them to be gone.

As the Cyclist I'd like to think I would realise I was contributing to the motorhome problem behind and pulled over for a minute and enjoyed the view. As the motorcyclist Id have rescued my ride out by again pulling over, enjoying the view and resuming journey with less frustrations ahead. As the motorhome driver I wouldn't have planned to be on a road like that but then there are caravan and motorhome sites in areas similar. Or sat nav could have sent them down wrong road as they had accidentally set vehicle type to hatchback etc. At this stage though the motorhome couldn't do much except block the road as seemed nowhere to pull over In reality only the two two wheelers can improve the situation for themselves or for others.🤷🏼‍♂️ There may of course be many reasons not to do the above, Cyclist could be in a timed run for upcoming event or they may have pulled over several times already for example. And accept Motorcyclist wanted to make a useful video. It's best try to find safest way out of a situation no point lying in a hospital bed wishing we had chosen a safer course.

The main problem with motorhomes is that the drivers, who normally drive a car, don't tend to drive them very often and therefore they struggle with the size and weight of the MH. MH and caravans are the scourge of country roads in the summer. I agree that the cyclist should have been more observant and should have given way to the queue of traffic in his wake.

I seem to remember a report in a newspaper many years ago of a farmer causing a massive tailback by not pulling in when he could have done and was prosecuted for obstruction. To some extent the cyclist might well have been as guilty as the bell end driving the motorhome but identifying said cyclist might be more difficult. It's certainly a lesson in how frustration might have caused an accident.

Eh lad, that's nowt! That said, I can sympathise with the situation. I lived in Philippines for 10 years, where it's not at all unusual to see an ancient guy leisurely pedalling a bicycle with sidecar attached, laden with wife, fruit, fish, often surmounted by a huge open beach umbrella, or with cheap plastic household items for sale, piled perhaps some 6 or 8 foot high and making at best 4 kph on a tiny road with a constant stream of oncoming traffic squeezing past and zero chance of an overtake; I can identify with the frustration. There, funeral processions are walked, accompanied by blaring music, often over a distance of 4 or 5 km and the funeral procession itself can be over 200 metres in length, never mind the length of the tailback of traffic. Throw in a fuel tanker or other large truck, plus jeepneys, trikes, wandering dogs, goats, pigs and carabao and a myriad of kamakasi riders on their below-150 cc bikes (riders now have to wear helmets, but the law doesn't define where, so they're often on the elbow or perched atop the skull) and the result is around an hour or so's complete mayhem. It's little wonder the daily road toll averages 36 killed per day! Philippines; it's God's way of teaching one patience...

😂 I’m a motorcyclist, a cyclist and I tow a caravan. So i can see it from a few points of view. However as a cyclist how much progress would you make continually pulling over?🤔 if it’s hilly and an opportunity arose to pull over I would. You’ve got to ask why on earth would you go down such narrow lanes with a motorhome🤔. That Insignia was going through at any opportunity and well worth keeping your distance.

The motorhome could have been any larger motorised vehicle ( milk tanker, Delivery vehicle, car, tractor ), with the means to go at faster speeds, and make progress. I ride those 'exact same roads' ( only there last week ) and the Lycra mob are the major cause of the hold ups, and potential accidents above anyone else. For some reason being a cycling enthusiast now gives you a belief that you are the most important thing on the road, and everyone else must make way for you. It's time they were licenced, taxed and insured, if they want a say in their rights, they should pay for it like the rest of us !

I have mixed opinions on this one, having towed a caravan for many years and also cycling once in a while. There were multiple opportunities for the camper van driver to have overtaken that cyclist, but likewise on the small roads the cyclist would have helped by moving aside a couple of times. The campervan, to me was really struggling with a vehicle that was more than capable of safely carrying higher speeds than they were. I'm not advocating dangerous driving of course as the speed limit isn't a target, but it is possible to use swifter travel safely. In this case I'd say the camper driver was driving a vehicle they weren't comfortable with.

So was it the cyclist’s fault when everybody stopped until the motor home could pass the parked cars? Was it the cyclist’s fault that the motor home driver seemed incapable of overtaking when the road opened up? Was it everybody’s fault for expecting a narrow road to be able to handle the amount of traffic? Yes the cyclist should have pulled over , but it’s a fair bet that lumbering motor home wouldn’t have gone much faster anyway! Roads need to be shared, and here we had two road users who could both have done their bit to help the flow.

I feel your pain. I ride bicycles as well as motorcycles. In the US, the cyclist has to share the road when and where possible and most here do. Most road cyclists would pull off and let traffic around. Safer for everyone. But this guy seems oblivious to road rules and common sense. In the US, I could see the Vauxhall driver running the cyclist off the road in a fit of road rage after he got past the motorhome. If the motorhome driver would have been courteous, he/she could have pulled off to let the cars behind get ahead, and then the cars and you could have easily gotten by the cyclist. As it is, a lot of people were grinding their teeth and letting loose with a whole alternate vocabulary.

If sense was common everyone would have it. As a cyclist, motorcyclist and someone who has driving large trucks you should be aware of your surroundings and use common sense and courtesy especially on narrow country roads. The cyclist should have pulled off to let the traffic pass and the driver of the motor home should stay off narrow roads until he’s gained the confidence and experience to handle them. Here in the states motorhomes are usually driven by retirees who’s previous experience has been limited to driving a large four door sedan. Watching them at a gas station trying to maneuver up to a pump can be quite entertaining.

The hint is in the name - public road. In the countryside life has a different pace. Travel can be problematic and we need to be patient. Farm activities, animals on the roads being moved between locations, poor weather and those enjoying the scenic beauty are just a few of the benefits of living in the countryside. Country folk will try to give way, if possible, to you. But, when herding animals or driving large machinery, this is not always possible. It seems that the cyclist and the camper van owner (both of whom are to blame for very selfish behaviour) need to take a leaf form the country folk's book and give way when possible - _common sense isn't common._ We need to stop looking for instant gratification, thinking only about our own selfish selves and sit back and smell the roses (with the horse manure fertiliser). Before anyone flames me, I used to live in the middle of nowhere in the Yorkshire Dales and, even now, my preferred weekend bimble on the motorbike is down the small country lanes where I encounter all of the above and some downright abysmal road surfaces covered in gravel, mud, muck and other detritus. If there are vehicles blocking the road or moving slowly, pull over and enjoy the scenery for 10 minutes or so. Patience is a virtue...

Think yourself lucky, Dave! Round my neck o the woods it's mayhem in every direction most days. This due to militant cyclists, all in lycra ride in packs & deliberately spread the entire road width steadfastly refusing to move. They temporarily pull to centre if oncoming car only to instantly spread back to a road spanning diamond shape rolling road block. Sadly there are dozens of clumps of these ignorant chumps so you get caught every time you go anywhere. It must be a communicated deliberate tactic. So so frustrating & annoying & arrogant! 😡

It's all got worse since the pandemic, during which, and afterwards, there has been an explosion in the popularity of cycling and motorhome-owning. UK roads are famously narrow, especially in rural areas. Combine these factors along with farm traffic, horse riders, and the ever-increasing size of cars, there is regular congestion. Traffic speeds drop to those of the slowest vehicle as there are few opportunities to overtake. Motorcycles are the exception to all this, the one type of vehicle which due to its size and speed does not obstruct any other, and can overtake easily. Cycling is a healthy and generally sociable activity but cyclists don't help their case with this sort of inconsiderate behaviour, the rural equivalent of red light running which they often do in towns. When driving a car or riding a motorcycle, I stay aware of what is going on behind me. Where I notice an impatient driver behind me, I pull over at a safe place to allow them to pass, even when they are clearly going to be breaking the speed limit. Better that than have them attempt a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre. It's all part of road craft, and plain consideration for others!

The car and motorcyclist were only delayed by 15 seconds at the most by the cyclist, whereas the motorhome had been delaying them for 8 minutes! If anything the cyclist did the car driver and motorcyclist a favour by slowing the motorhome down so they could overtake it. If I'd been the cyclist I wouldn't have pulled over. The car and motorcyclist overtook with no problem and the motorhome also had that opportunity. I do pull over if a vehicle has been following me for more than a few minutes and there have been no overtaking opportunities.

Biggest issue is that cyclists are riding too fast now. When everyone pedalled around on single speed bicycles they were mostly doing about 10mph and getting off to push when it came to steep hills. That camper would have had no choice but to overtake back in the 70s. It was easy to pass a tractor then too. I'm not sure how we've allowed people to pedal round at 25 to 30mph everywhere (even holding 'road races') when a kid of 16 needs a helmet, training, insurance and a provisional licence just to ride a moped with a top speed of 30.

l share your frustration Dave, there is nothing more aggravating than to be stuck behind drivers who are totally unaware of whats going on behind them, or don't care anyway. Frustration with 'Dawdling' drivers leads to taking chances one would not normally take. In this case the cyclist could have pulled over, the fact that he didn't shows gross self entitlement plus inconsideration to other road users. What could, should have been a pleasant ride through the moors completely ruined by bloodymindedness by one cyclist! .....l refer you back to your last ride with like minded friends, a glorious ride accompanied with thoughtful musing narration....

Gross entitlement goes both ways. The silly dangerous driving and lack of self control is a sign of a very dangerous driver that should not be on the road, no excuse can justify that behaviour.

Whilst I get frustrated at some cyclists (But not all) the lad in the clip was riding close to the kerb and his legs were going like bee's wings I suggest the motorhome appeared to have a number of opportunities to pass him safely. Having said the former with respect to cyclists the law requires a five feet safe overtaking distance and the road appeared narrow

As someone who has ridden a bike for 50 years and has ridden motorbikes, if any blame is pointed it should be at the Vauxhall driver for being impatient and that road may well have a 60mph max speed limit, but that does not mean that you have to do 60 !

most states have a 4 or 5 car back up law that who ever is causing a back up must pull over at first wide spot to let everyone by which includes bicycle riders blocking traffic, but as the world knows bikes only follow the rules of the road when its suits them

The cyclist should have been aware, for his own benefit as much as everyone else. The camper van took up the entire width of the road, putting oncoming cars in the ditch. The following car had a "must pass under any circumstances" mindset. Modern road users, in a nutshell. All take, no give.
@jeffcarroll6959
@jeffcarroll6959 3 месяца назад
We can’t rely on people’s common sense because most don’t have any. Could width restrictions on roads such as this keep the larger camper vans off them? Think the cars then would be able to safely overtake bikes a lot easier. It won’t stop dangerous driving or inconsiderate cyclists, just make it less likely.

I think leave the push bike at the station car park and the camper van should leave the kitchen sink in the kitchen and the kings highway should be the sole domain of the motorcyclist 👍👌👏

Due consideration should be shown by all road users whether they be car, motorcyclists, tractors, cyclists or motor homes. Common sense should override entitlement but as we all know common sense ain’t all that common and if I could sell it I would be a millionaire. Andy.

Seemed like a combination of the motorhome driver not being able to commit to a pass on the cyclist & the pig headed cyclist not wanting to help the motorhome driver pass safely. In my opinion for what it’s worth, the motorhome driver was not capable of safety driving that particular vehicle in a normal manner & had to drive that slowly to air on the side of caution. Where I would have failed is that as a motorcyclist, there is no way I would have waited behind ! The Vauxhall was very aware of you & it wasn’t going to let you by, it had taken a very central to right of centre road position.

Loved the video, regarding who's at fault, we'll you could say the cyclist and the camper, but all of you are entitled to be on the road but there's things in life that you can and can't control but it's how you deal with them that will determine the outcome, the cyclist could have pulled over and have a break but so could you and the camper. The camper could have planed a better route being that any other vehicle could have overtaken the bike so to sum up a little bit of inconsideration on all parts an impatience. I always remember my driving awareness course them saying 60mph isn't a target.

Not much the Motorhome could have done in this situation if these roads were the only option to get to or from destination. The cyclist could have used a little common sense to just allow the Motorhome and immediate traffic behind go past before carrying on with journey.

The joys of the open road eh? You were caught in the perfect storm so to speak. Doesn’t the Highway Code say pull over and let vehicles overtake? Well done Dave for displaying perfectly how to respond and behave when confronted by diversity. Thankfully, meeting two such very low skilled road users on the same narrow stretch of country lane doesn’t happen very often. By the grace of god go I. Cheers and ride safe bud.

The cyclist could've pulled over but they rarely do ,or bother to look over their shoulders occasionally to see what's behind them. The motor home driver could have passed on either road but the 1.5 metre rule might have been upper most in his mind ,stopping him squeezing past, but you did the right thing Dave staying back from it all and saying nowt , you probably would have got in trouble for hate speech if you'd have asked the cyclist was it to much trouble to pull over and let everyone pass . 😉

The , no doubt hired, motorhome driver is terrified and is completely blinkered trying to keep it between the walls and panicking everytime he meets a car because he's never driven anything larger than the family car before. The cyclist has the sense of entitlement and superiority common with many cyclists. Either of these people cause frustration and possibly accidents.

Both of 'em lol Cyclists think they are "entitled" to own the road but Motorhomes are a real pet peeve of mine. Just like cars they have got bigger over the years and as someone who has driven professionally for many years it staggers me that anyone who spends all year driving a small hatchback can, once or twice a year, jump in a vehicle the size of a small truck and drive it without any form of separate test. I have followed so many of these idiots who have no clue how to judge the width of their vehicle and no idea how to use mirrors. On small roads you find them trundling along at 25mph terrified to get close to the left hand side of the road so they drive down the middle with no regard for anything behind them. (sorry for the rant but it boils my p**s) 🤣🤣🤣

I’m a cyclist of many decades. First and foremost I occupy whichever area of the road makes me safest and visible. If a car has to wait for me momentarily, so be it - the Highway Code supports me in that. But it also says I should make efforts to allow traffic to pass where necessary, which I do. It’s annoying because one cyclist gets all the car drivers into a lather about ALL cyclists. Strangely, if a car driver sees another car driver with poor road etiquette, they don’t associate themselves with it.

Cyclists don't pay road tax and many have no concern for anybody but themselves. The campervan - couldn't or wouldn't pass the cyclist - maybe they need to redo their drivers test as there was plenty of time and room to get around the cyclist.
