Hexagons appear all over the natural world from honeycomb to bubbles, and they even appear in organic chemistry! In this episode of Crash Course Organic Chemistry, we're learning all about cyclohexanes, including how rings pucker to relieve strain, the boat and chair conformations, and how ring flips can switch substituents from axial to equatorial. We'll practice a lot of chair flips, but don't flip an actual chair just yet! Lots of practice is key to understanding organic chemistry's favorite manifestation of the hexagon.

At 9:19, when we show the gauche and anti conformations, we accidentally changed the perspective when going from the bottom chair to the Newman projection for the anti conformation. As a challenge, try drawing the Newman projection of the chair on the bottom left of the screen looking down the marked bonds--you can check your work using our corrected image: i.imgur.com/2DZtqRf.png It’s tricky to visualize these 3D images, so kudos to our awesome viewer that caught this! Thank you for your continued support

Crash Course in 2012: “This is water. Water is good.” Crash Course in 2020: “The methyl group moves into the axial position as carbon-1 pushes up and stays above the plane. The ethyl group has a lot less axial strain, therefore this a stable structure.”

Thank you so much for this! I've graduated years ago (somehow it's more fun to learn when there's no pressure of exams, who would've guessed) and the axial-equatorial flipping was one of the things that I had a lot of difficulty visualizing. That animation at 11:30 helps a lot! Wish I had this around when I was still taking org chem.

If you recognize even a small portion of the terms/models/ideas it won't feel as daunting when you start studying them in depth. This works for me at least - its not the same for everyone

So where does the energy for the chair flips come from? It's can't be doing it for free? How does it get the energy for doing such?
@derkateramabend
@derkateramabend 4 года назад
The energy for chair flips usually comes from the ambient room temperature (20 degrees Celsius is more than enough). If you were to subject single molecules of cyclohexane to very low temperatures, you wouldn't be able to see any more chair flips.

ok I'll say it - cyclohexane is not a proper hexagon, exactly because of the puckering, that makes it 3d. Depending on perspective and conformation it can also look like a rhombus (chair) or a triangle (boat). If you made a graphene-like sheet with fused cyclohexane rings it would be all crinkled unlike the flat graphene with fused benzene rings.

@@scottdorfler2551 Heh, benzene is basically a cyclohexane with pi bonds.
@Planejerle18
@Planejerle18 4 года назад
@Scott Dorfler To elaborate a little bit more, benzene is a molecule that displays aromaticity (in fact, it could probably be considered the prototypical aromatic molecule). Aromatic molecules are rings whose atoms are all sp2 hybridized which makes them planar. Furthermore, aromatic compounds have 4n+2 pi electrons (where n is an integer) that are conjugated and delocalized around the ring. On the other hand, cyclohexane is just a cyclic alkane that consists solely of sigma bonds and whose carbons are all sp3 hybridized (is non-planar). I hope this helps/is interesting!
@scottdorfler2551
@scottdorfler2551 4 года назад
@@Planejerle18 Very helpful thankyou. I'm not in school or anything just fascinated with chemistry/astronomy. I seem to easily grasp astronomy..... organic chemistry not so much. I'm too stubborn to just give up. The only way I seem to get anywhere with it is watch the same videos over and over. Read the same papers over and over. It works but not very efficiently. Wondering if you have any recommendations. Does this ever get any easier?

Hello sir this is a really super video but one thing I wanted to request you is that please make videos for NEET exam well if you do not know about NEET exam then I am here to explain you about it and NEET exam is an entrance exam for medicine in India and nearly 10,00,00 people apply for the exam each and every year and it is still concerned that I do not know that whether this channel is Indian or some channel which is in abroad but please take my request into consideration and further on the NEET exam are conducted in exam centres and the total mark of this exam is 720 in which Biology which is the body carries 180 marks zoology carries 180 marks physics carries 180 marks and chemistry carries 180 marks so the total 720 maths and as India all now India is highly populated country and hence the competition for this exam is so hard and hence proper understanding of concepts and easy tricks to solve the problems and finishing the exam on time that is three hours is very important to crack the exam and go into The field of medicine . The syllabus for NEET exam is Indian CBSE class 11 and 12 science books that is physics chemistry botany and Zoology books and most of the students they feel physics to be so hard so rather than I know using your image in the video please have a paper and a pen and I think you must have all learnt about various tricks at the college level and if you say any formula to reduce the physics tips like in NEET exam questions will be so tricky and you have to use nearly 2 to 3 concepts at a time when you use these concepts it will take nearly 1to2 Page which is not possible because only three hours of time and 180 questions. So one minute for one question but if you just take to page today I want to answer than your time will all be wasted and I am sure that you cannot Kranti exam and hence there is a need for tricks both for chemistry physics and biology and I think that this channel is really so good so please so please make tricks and tips from the college level or any other tricks of your own kind and please help us because I have subscribe your channel and I have shared all your videos to my friends and relatives because I felt that it is good and I also promise my friends and relatives that conformally the RU-vid channel will make tricks for NEET exam thank you I hope that you will not ignore my request thank you so much
