Cymbidium canaliculatum 'Jessica'; an Australian tropical native orchid! 

I think the name canaliculatum refers to the shape of the leaves. The species Dendrobium canaliculatum also has channeled leaves.

I've overwintered my C. canaliculatum var. sparkesii here in Melbourne outdoors, undercover, in full sun with minimal problems. I kept it bone dry from Anzac Day (25th of April) till approx. Remembrance Day (11th of November). I did give it a few light sprays of water on warm sunny days near the end, as the bulbs were quite wrinkled. Another grower I discussed this with also keeps to this dry period regime. It seems they need it I did loose a few young bulbs at the start of autumn, but I think that was transplant shock as I received it bare rooted. But it bounced back and the 6 remaining bulbs have given me 4 flower-spikes, that are just about finishing now. During the flowering 4 new shoots have come up as well. I expect yours will probably start pushing shoots out soon. Yours looks healthy! Best of luck!

The flowers look similar to Zygopetalums. Unfortunately, here the winters are, wet, cold with shorter day light.

I would watch the weather forecast to understand more about the clrmate that Cymbidium comes from and go by that. You could just give in and buy grow lights. I did😄🙏

That’s a really nice colour variety… new growths will come after the flowers finish from my experience.. it’s also found throughout rural Queensland right down to NSW and I would expect it to grow in northern NSW as well..

Hi Matthew Congratulations for your videos. I live in Italy in Florence and I think the climate is similar to that of Melbourne. I grow a Cymbidium madidum and I would like to try the canalicultum, But when does it have to stay in the northern hemisphere without being wet? Thanks for your answer

Hi again Matthew, could I change the subject for a minute and ask about kingianums? I can't see the answer in your videos. You say they need a winter chill and plenty of winter sun so I have mine in a cold greenhouse which has been down usually between 5-10C. I only water about once every 10 days. A couple of canes are showing the beginnings of spikes, can I bring them in the house now before the ice and snow comes in the UK or should I leave them out and use the heater on frosty nights until they all show flower spikes? Happy New Year and I hope the move goes well 😊❤

I am thinking the terracotta pot will be a wrong move for that species. In the wild they grow in a hollow tree trunk and the roots can grow all the way down the inside of the trunk and into the ground.. the rotting wood in the hollow actually stays moist even though it might not get rain in the dry months. I think the terracotta pot will dry out way too much. If you must do terracotta, maybe double pot. Good luck.

you have to be careful what you read online mathew. Like the maxillaria tenuifolia "needs" a dry winter rest or it won't flower but the truth is it doesn't need it and will flower just fine if you carry on watering it too. Many times the things I hear others say makes me even think someone must have invested these myths at some point to purposefully make growers fail. Your tip of not watering this orchid for 8 months. Yeah, you have made me really tempted to buy this orchid just to water it all year long and prove I can flower it doing that lol. But i don't think I will do that. I would do it if you paid for one just to prove to you that most online advice is a guideline that does not always need to be followed... This pretty much applies to any guide I have come across. Once one realizes one guide has flaws, one realizes they all tend to have the same flaws. Watch a youtuber called orchid doc: growing orchids in jamaica. See how people in jamaica grow these orchids you say need a cool dry rest. Just for comparrisons sake and to show you how it's done when an orchid doesn''t get the cool rest that all the guides say they need.

I just received "maddidum x canaliculatum var. sparksei", little black sambo. I've never owned a cymbidium before and after doing some research and watching this video, im wondering if you could advise as to what to pot it in for window sill growing? It just came bare root, lightly wrapped in moss

Those are some thick leaves, but an 8 month rest seems a bit extreme, I would say 3-4 months is more than adequate.
