Cymbidium rescue & re-pot! Dividing and re-potting a massive old Cymbidium plant from an old garden!

This week Plant Lovers: Orchid Rescue! Yes, a friend called as she was winding up the estate of a distant relative and before the house went to market wanted me to rescue some old potted Cymbidiums! Now - winter is NOT the best time to divide or re-pot Cymbidiums as they are busy producing their flower spikes, but as you can see in this video, one of the plants I found was in a smashed pot and in dire need of a rescue! So in this video I'll show you how I went about dividing the old plant into new viable pieces, what to do with the old still alive but leafless back-bulbs and how I re-potted it. Needless to say it was a MAMOTH task and...dare I say it....might make a GREAT case for using plastic pots for Cymbidiums!
This is the mycorrhizal fungi brand I use, but you can certainly use whatever brand is easiest for you to get where ever you are: biostim.com.au/shop/myco-gold/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwidSWBhDdARIsAIoTVb2G1yg8dCwROW7TKooYPxME_XmxffMRCtpxSURJZbLktCfmbPaQUQ8aAhLyEALw_wcB
And this is my other Cymbidium video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aPNCwfrxwe8.html
If you're interested in seeing my friends garden where the in-spike plants are resting, you can here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZRw1_IWZyOU.html

I coat the inside of my clay pots with boiled linseed oil and let it dry. It is waterproof and keeps the pot from losing water through the sides. Clay aesthetic with the performance of plastic.

Thank you so much for this video. I went to You Tube to find this kind of advice. We have a beautiful Cymbidium that my father named. He was a very well known orchid grower in Geelong and passed away nearly 8 years ago. We have kept it alive and have had a few spikes, but it really need repotting. Now I feel confident to repot it myself. Thank you!

Mathew! What a lucky duck to get new orchids for free. And enough to eventually share with others. You have a kind heart rescuing them from their cramped quarters! Lots of work repotting those massive old boys! I’m impressed with your knife and meat mallet skills as well! Always entertaining and I’m learning a lot. EVen though my two Cymbidiums are tiny still, Some day I might need to pull this episode up again and use it myself. I can’t wait to see yours bloom! I have to say I am very envious of your climate! Being able to leave most of your orchids outside all year has got to be wonderful!

This was very helpful. I inherited 25 cymbidiums from father in law. Had no clue and they had not been cared for a few years. I divided and repotted. Lots of bugs ran out and it was messy. Didn’t understand about the old pseudo bulbs and initially threw them out. But read something that stopped me and watching you I’m glad that I still have some. I’ve had very few flowers but enough to keep me motivated and I now know that I didn’t do anything horribly wrong and another year may well result in blooms. Btw I used an axe to break them up but they didn’t look much different to your genteel carving knife method! Thank your for this very useful info.

Wow thanks so much for this video! I have divided quite a few massive old ones in the last few years including one that also broke its terracotta pot. Not all have done well unfortunately, just realised I’ve been repotting in pots that are definitely too large! I also left a lot of the old dead roots on so maybe that wasn’t helpful. I still have one more massive inherited pot that I’ve been putting off dividing. But now I have a new confidence in the task ahead! Will get to it after it has flowered. Can’t wait to see a follow up video. Thank you!!

Thanks for watching! Mycorrhizal fungus is found in all soil and there are many many types. They develop symbiotic relationships with plants; in exchange for energy from photosynthesis they provide plants access to the water and nutrients in soil and help develop better root systems. Orchids in particular have a complex relationship Mycorrhizal fungi as it is essential to the germination of their seeds. So adding a dash of horticultural Mycorrhizal fungi to your pots can't hurt the plant but can really benefit it!

So thankful I found your channel, 🙏❤ I have some rescue ones in similar condition, these are in large yet split plastic pots , and although it's now winter though,can I repot and place it in a west/NW direction in TAS? They are very pot bound and in need of love ,my grandmother use to use polystyrene foam in the potting mixture( and old broken pots/rocks in the base for stability) ,I also found one that has a seed pod on it as well , I don't know what you would recommend for that 🙏
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers 21 день назад
I would wait until spring to repot - they'll be fine. And not much you can do with the seedpod really. It will burst at some point but the chances of anything germinating are almost nil - seed germination is a very complex process. You can also just cut the the whole spike off. Good luck with them all!

I took your advice and plopped it into some nice bark mix and let it be. I checked it this morning and there's a bunch of new baby roots and three new growths! Thank you so much! edit: I forgot to mention, that here in California usually cymbidiums are quite large but the pseudobulbs of this cymbidium is pretty small and the leaves are fairly thin. Each pseudobulb is perhaps as wide as my thumb. The bundle of 14 psedobulbs fits in the palm of my hand. I've never gotten it to bloom. Any suggestions?
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Год назад
Oh what a great story! Well there are two basic types of hybrid cymbidium: large ones with upright spikes and more compact plants with pendular spikes. Yours is perhaps the latter? As to blooming....basic care is: keep tightly potted + dappled light (bit stronger in winter) + cool winter seasonal change to stimulate flowering + let almost dry between waterings + fertilise in growing season (spring/summer). Good luck!

Hi I have a cymbidium. It was in bloom when it was given me. Yellow , white with some pink. About 5 years now. Never bloomed since. I guess I don’t know how to take care of it. I am planning to repot it. It is still alive, I ignored it a lot. I have kept it on my front patio porch. All these years. Watered it once a week. Soaking it. South west corner of patio. What should it be in??? Shade, sun, morning sun or late day sun????? 😮 It is spring here in Mexico. Days 90, & 68 at night. Did I water it too much. I always used left over fertilizer water from water my other orchids. I was planning of use lava rocks!!!!!! It seems to be in a lot of rocks. Till I repot, I’ll fine out what is below. The girl that gave it to me said not to throw away the old bulbs. So I never have. It is in sad shape. I think the pot I got is way too big. Maybe I will get a small er Terra Cara pot & put inside. Please give me advice!!!!!! Paula, 71, retired in Chapala, Mexico .

I would like to ask please! How long does it take for the plant to bloom after the orchid has been repotted
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Год назад
I think I cover this in the video; it depends! The plants bloom once a year in spring. If you repot once those those flowers have died, and you're lucky, you might get flowers the next spring if the plant has grown well. However they can sulk and wait a year...or even two! SO it depends upon your plant.

Hi Matthew, have you noticed differing results since adding mycorrhizal fungi to your mixes? Interested to hear your thoughts as I'd like to experiment.
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Год назад
Hi there - hard to quantify really as I've been using it from the start. But I would say with other potted plants the root systems are noticeably dense. You'd need to do a controlled experiment with two identical plants to get the answer! Good luck!

great video, I got some Cymbidiums damaged by cold last year, one grew back some leaves, but the others have bulbs still hard, but no leaves, and as far as I can see, no roots, hope they will grow this spring. I love fragrant orchids, can you recommend any Cymbidium species or variety for strong fragrance, in your own experience?
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Год назад
Thanks for watching - not really. The fragrant one I have is a no ID hybrid and the fragrance isn't exactly....floral! Best to find a seller who specialises in Cymbidiums, or your local orchid group and ask around. Good luck with you survivors!

Is there an update about these? I have a giant plant with five flower spikes, and no space for it in the colder room where I've kept it for a few years during winter. Can I keep it in a warmer room during winter? It is about 22 C in that room, and it has enough light. Thank you!
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers 2 месяца назад
Hi there - hmm - not sure about that much warmth as I’ve never grown them like that. You’ll just have to experiment and see how the plant responds! Good luck!

Sorry if this has been mentioned, and i missed it, but if i provide drainage and the appropriate soil, can i plant these in the ground? (In melb) Thanks so much.

I think yes and yes...there are certainly plants out in gardens that I've seen doing really well in Melbourne. Drainage would be key as you mentioned so perhaps an elevated bed or even trying to replicate their natural habitat under trees in the nooks of the root mass? Good luck!

Hi sir. After you split them like that, how many it would take for them to bloom again ?
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Год назад
Hi there - depends on the plant. Sometimes they will bloom the next cycle, sometimes they might sulk and skip a year. I've known both to happen.

Hi Matthew, I need to do this when temperature is warmer in NSW. Could you tell me what fungicide you use? I had some leaves turning black during long rainy summer we had. So I can maybe prevent this from happening next summer? Thanks 🙏
@helloplantlovers
@helloplantlovers Год назад
I'd start with with anything that's marketed for rose black spot and see if that works. And the leaves do age, discolour and drop over time so you probably only get a few years of maximum leaf health per pseudobulb before they will naturally start to look a bit ratty! Good luck!
