Listen now: colterwall.lnk.to/LittleSongsID
New Colter Wall song, "Cypress Hills and the Big Country", is an original song written about Colter's homeland and working relationship with that land. Released by La Honda Records on September 21, 2022, the song is one of two singles Colter recorded at Jereco Studios in Bozeman, Montana, just south of of native Saskatchewan, where he currently lives and ranches. Accompanying the track is longtime friend and collaborator of Colter's, Patrick Lyons, who has both been a member of his backing band, The Scary Prairie Boys. Most recently audiences heard Lyons on Colter's Live in front of Nobody live studio performance. Listeners first heard Lyons with Colter in the studio on singles, "Happy Reunion" and "Bob Fudge." Acclaimed album Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs also featured Lyons on several instruments.
Engineering this song was Luke Scheeler, at his Jereco Studios in Montana. Mike Monseur mastered the track. Another taste of Colter as producer, the song is strings only, waiving percussion for a more melodic and soft call to the reverence for landscape and bucolic living.

This man never misses. I think he's found a sweet spot with his voice. Not as raspy and guttural as his first two albums. Which I love, but he mentioned it was rough on his voice, but this is also not as punchy and twangy as Western Swing and Waltzes. This here is perfection.

I cowboyed for Gerhardt most of my late twenties. But prior to that I road for Anderson, and was cutting timber out of sluice box canyon on the Howl Ranch. This is Montana I'm talking about... but, Saskatchewan (Colter's country) is close enough to relate to and, I think Colter does an amazing job translating Charlie Russel country (Saskatchewan, The Dekotas, Montana) to those who may not know of it. Such a fine artist Colter is.

Colter. Thank you for being who you are. I run a few cows out on the Elkwater side of the hills not too ashamed to say this song choked me up a bit. You captured everything I love about this part of the world and the life my family loves. Thank you and keep it up your songs are helping to keep our way of life alive in a world that don’t make much sense anymore.

This is my current favorite song. I know it's about Alberta but it could also describe many places in Central and eastern Montana. The Charlie Russell reference really adds to it as many of his works were inspired by his time living around Cascade County Montana. That thought causes a flood of mental images of places around there that I love to be like breaks country of the Missouri River and Marias River. Often times when I think too long about it I'm a little overcome by emotion. The pronghorn reference is also wonderful. It's a distinctly western animal and like elk and mule deer is rarely referenced in music.

This music really hits home for me. I grew up in Biggar Saskatchewan. My school in the ninth grade ended up taking all us kids down to Cypress Hills for a week long camping trip. I grew up on a cattle ranch up around North Battleford. Some years later i spent a really great summer living in Speedy Creek. I was staying at the BIG EYE. Got to see an amazing band called Prairie Storm, two brothers that were amazing. That was back in 97. I was 24 years old . You just keep doing what you,re doing Colter.

Been waiting since you posted the short for this the other week, I absolutely LOVE the song and have been listening to it over and over again. Also, here are the lyrics so everyone doesn't have to hunt them down. You can see the bear paws, The old man on his back, Prickly pears, a Blue Moon, In the short and native grass, There's a bunch of empty beer cans in an old loose mineral sack, To give you some idea of where you're at. Buck brush and sage Far as you can see It's the south slopes of the hills that turns to pines and poplar trees Cattle all a-grazing up and down on Big Coulee Under Charlie Russel skies like a blue and purple sea. Cypress Hills And the big country below Where life is still And a man can be alone. And you can duck underneath all your trials and troubles for a time, Like a pronghorn underneath the bottom wire. - Solo - Cypress Hills And the big country below Where life is still And a man can be alone. And you can duck underneath all your trials and troubles for a time, Like a pronghorn underneath the bottom wire. You can sweat and cuss and wonder why they say our west has died, And the folks around the cypress hills Still drag calves to the fire.
