Welcome to Cyprus, crystal clear water, pristine beaches, sunshine, Mediterranean paradise. An unrivalled tourist destination, but one that has been plagued by a conflict that celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. In 1974, following a coup d'état by Greek ultranationalists, the Turks invaded the island under the pretext of protecting the Turkish Cypriot minority. The conflict resulted in the division of the island. Even today, a strip of land separating Cyprus from east to west is still under UN control. Fences, barbed wire, watchtowers and ghost towns like Varosha (a suburb of Famagusta) are permanent reminders of the conflict. Its capital, Nicosia, is Europe's last divided capital.
