And I'm glad that despite his height, he doesn't get typecast like as a dwarf or something, the man is so talented and he truly deserved great roles for his talent, not his height. He's easily the main reason why I watched Game Of Thrones, he made the seasons even the bad ones semi watchable for the least bit
His best role is without a doubt in an indie film called a case of you. It’s even more brilliant than Tyrion Lannister or a station agent. His acting is mindblowing there.
"My fate is to love her from afar" OMG the way Peter say it. He is perfect, just perfect for a romantic lead. I cannot wait to see this movie...bonus is a freaking MUSICAL 😍
He's an insult to the original play, the character is supposed to be witty bold, charming and, most famousely, to have an enormous nose. He respects nothing of Rostand's work and turned what really is the greatest love story ever, into some boring musical with no personality.
The moment where Roxanne confesses her love for Christian you can see the heartbreak on his face. Peter Dinklage is such an expressive actor that he doesn’t even need to speak to convey emotion. Can’t wait
Hollywood need writers. This is utter garbage. Go watch the version from 1990 (from which, from whata I can see, shots were copied 1:1) if you really want a good movie.
Joe Wright doesn't get enough credit as director. Forget about Pan, he directed great movies such as Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, Anna Karenina, Hanna, and Darkest Hour. He's definitely a great filmmaker so I would be watching just because of him behind the camera and Peter Dinklage too
Great to see that there are still filmmakers like Joe Wright that make grand sweeping movies that don’t rely on the crutch of CGI to make beautiful cinema
It seems like people are sleeping on this. This movie has everything. Sweeping musical sequences, the YEARNING, the fencing, the swashbuckle and ROMANTICISM of it all!! I can't wait to see this
Yeah I hope it gets more publicity in the coming months. I saw it a couple of days ago and I can't stop thinking about it, it's really an incredible film. Perfect casting, directing, and the music made my heart soar
@@CS-sr2wz I hope so too! Brilliant casting. I can't wait to see the film to see if they have kept the original character dynamics or how it has changed. How awesome- you already saw the movie!!
remove the sweeping musical, the complete trashing of the original material or just .. you know.. name it differently, so that people don't misunderstand this as some sort of Cyrano de Bergerac movie ... which it is clearly NOT.
@@SocialNetwooky Yikes Sammy...did you see the film? It's not a "complete trashing of the original material", it's another take on it and quite frankly more relatable
Yeah, especially as there have been so many reviews of Dear Evan Hansen and how bad that is. THIS is how you do a great Broadway adaption, and if anybody’s acting deserves to be memorialized it’s Peter Dinklage’s, not Ben Platt’s.
'I will make you romantic. Will you make me handsome?' That line and especially the way Peter Dinklage/ Cyrano delivered it ...was simply heartbreaking. Beautiful in its simplicity and heartbreaking.
Cyrano is basically catfishing, but no phones so i'll give it a pass. Plus, dinklage isn't performing a pity role most of the time since that opening makes him look badass
“She must have the choice!” *FINALLY!!!!!* it’s not longer “let’s fight for her affections!” It’s “let her decides who she’s wants to love.” I’ve been waiting for this kind of emotional maturity in a movie
Now let's hope it's before she marries Christian, because that was definitely a marriage under false pretenses. I would not mind the story derailing from that since they adjusted Cyrano's 'flaw'.
Have you read the book or watched the French film? Yes, Christian marries her under false pretenses (mostly because Roxanne almost forces him to do so), but is Christian himself the one to say that Roxanne should know the truth and decide what to do.
Peter Dinklage was born to play a romantic lead. I love this. I've been waiting for this. He is the closest thing to Cary Grant we have in Hollywood right now. Because he's the class.
He’s played a main role before, but I know what you mean. I think we’re alone now and the station agent he starred in as main character. Maybe more. Just two I’m aware of.
It's a redo of "Roxanne", starring Steve Martin and Darryl Hannah...which was a redo of 7 film adaptations of "Cyrano de Bergerac"...adapted from the stage play, "Cyrano de Bergerac".
I love this adaptation beyond the telling. It's so delicate, and the songs are so quiet, almost incidental. Dinklage's Cyrano is a revelation, wonderfully complex because yes, now there is the visible defect that goes beyond the easy false nose-his stature-while at the same time, the idea of Roxanne loving anyone else is absurd, because Dinklage is so handsome and charismatic whatever his height. As with life, what's really holding Cyrano back isn't his self-proclaimed ugliness, but his fear of being vulnerable and honest about his feelings. Just a gorgeous film.
That was so beautifully expressed and most accurate in describing Pete’s incredible performance and describing what Cyrano fears. I believe this is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen !
I want someone to look at me the way he looks at her, his face behind the wall as she sings says everything. This looks amazing and I cannot wait to see it!! :D Peter Dinklage is always fantastic!
I love Peter!! Omg I’m so stoked that he’s playing the lead. His face when Roxanne said she loved someone was priceless. He makes you feel without words. Can’t wait until it comes out!! ❤️❤️❤️
Saw this movie last week and it totally blew me away. Fantastic songs. Fantastic performances. Of course everyone will only talk about West Side Story, but this movie shouldn't go unnoticed. Some of the songs are still resonating in my head. Well done, The National! Oscar-worthy masterpiece! 👏👏
He's just such an AMAZING actor! When he's portraying pain, you feel pain, when he's angry, you're angry, and when he's in love, so are you. Peter Dinklage is BRILLIANT👏👏👏
Absolutely! My god is he masterful at conveying such a broad range of emotions to a deeply captivating extent. His eyes say it all. He's freaking great.
The original story took place in the first half of the 17th century, and sorry not in Sicily in the middle of the 18th century. I don't see this film, but to me it won't be worth seeing, when there's one masterpiece with Gérard Depardieu, filmed in 1990 by Jean-Paul Rappeneau !
Such an amazing trailer! The timing, the transitions, the scenes they chose, the music... it's so perfect. I could just watch this trailer over and over again (which I have already been doing for months)
Watched the songs from it on RU-vid for months after it debuted as well. Beautiful. Loved Haley's voice, and that Peter sounded so much like Leonard Cohen!
Already seen and must say it's a brilliant masterpiece. Music and songs, together with scenery of camera really serve well and, of course, Peter's role just shines above all. Would like to say some defects, but there're hardly any of them. Truly recommended.
I generally hate musicals. My parents were so addicted to watching old '60s musicals to the point I can't stand them anymore. But, if any actor could make me willingly, WILLINGLY, hand over the money to watch a musical in a theater, it'd be Peter Dinklage. And I *will* watch this.
I thought Cyranos issue was having a huge nose, nor being a small person. So casting was off. Not that Peter Dinkle shouldn't be lead. Just not sure if it's with this story.
@@victoriafrost5461 What, being a dwarf isn't enough of a deformity ? Adding a big nose would just turn the whole thing into a farce. Cyrano is not conventionally handsome, period. What the actual problem is , isn't relevant.
I saw this today at the Middleburg Film Festival and it was so stunning. Innovative, heartbreaking, whimsical, melancholic, I could go on. I cried, I laughed, cried more, and the music is just phenomenal - the Dessner's have done something really special here. Joe Wright really is a master of his craft, of course Peter Dinklage is unforgettable and so charming; it's hard not to fall in love with him in this film, but I really thought Haley Bennett was a standout as well. Whatever, I could spill a thousand words on this just like Cyrano does for Roxanne but at the end of the day the point is simple: I loved this film. Go see it when it comes out.
Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, Anna Karenina, Hanna, and Darkest Hour, because of this, I would give him a pass for the mediocre movies he made. He deserved a lot credit for directing especially for Pride and Prejudice
Before I knew it was a musical, I was hooked the moment Peter introduced himself as Cyrano. That excited me so much, that once Roxane started singing it threw me. A…musical? Really? Now I’m really interested. There’s a tiny part that’s cringing at the ‘musical’ getting in the way, but to see Peter Dinklage in this role is still worth watching.
Same, but I don't think I would enjoy this musical, sounds a little basic. On the other hand, I've been obsessed with Cyrano's story since I was 10, and the casting is great. I feel conflicted.
That moment around 1:19 when her realizes she's talking about someone else, from joy to anguish in less than a second. Worthy of an Oscar in and of itself.
Well he has a beautiful voice so any change would ruin it. Generally American actors should not attempt British accents. I say this as an American. Keanu Reeves in Dracula Eric Stoltz in Haunted Summer were just cringy.
Why in the world should he speak (English) with a French accent?? French people speak French with one another, not 'English with a French accent'. As this is an Anglophone movie about a story set in France and with purely French characters, English replaces French, i.e. the characters speak an unaccented English.
I advise you to see first the French adaptation with Gérard Depardieu which is a masterpiece. It uses the verses of the original play by Edmond Rostand, everything is beautiful and transcendent 🌟
I've seen that. It stuck very close to the original story, but the new version seems lovely too. A big nose or a height-challenged man seems to me fitting. Beauty seeks beauty and there's no room for oddities, the tale goes...
@@anwyn9846 Oh, I love Roxanne. The setting, the place they filmed it, is beautiful. The cast includes Daryl Hannah, Shelley Duvall and Michael J. Pollard. It's a piece of fluff compared to the real Cyrano, but sometimes we all need that.
Absolutely! But also read the play, cause once you do, you won't settle for less than Cyrano's witty poetry and love language! (Ngl I was EAGERLY waiting for the "c'est un peu court, jeune homme" tirade because come on, it's iconic and also even more fitting than the original one since he's actually short... We need Peter Dinklage to be our sarcastic king one more time plz)
This is THE BEST version I have Ever Seen!!! An hour later, and I'm still crying!! I was expecting a good show with Peter in it. But this went, far, far higher. This movie broke my heart! He wasn't supposed to die! And she wasn't supposed to love and lose, again! His dying song/breathe causes fresh tears all over again. Thank you for this instant classic! God bless you all ❤💔💔
@@aqualcunopiaceclassico3201 No, but it is a gateway to a beautiful story. I fell in love with Cyrano from watching it as kid on Wishbone! Now I have 9 translations of the original play and have acted in a production. I'm all for accessible gateways!
@@oliviarogers3559 This is a different version of the story. In this version, Cyrano isn’t self conscious about his nose, he’s self conscious about his height. It’s a change from the original story but I think it still works.
@@sweeney60 I honestly think it works much better. Like a big nose can be a big source of insecurity for sure, but it just doesn't... seem like such a big deal...? Pardon me if that's insensitive. I feel like in this version, it could be a much more significant and realistic obstacle.
@@efoxkitsune9493 As anything that gives someone character, that should not be... In the end we are all unique and ideally should be appreciated this way.
"His name is Christian" Cyrano: (trying to think of a way to get Roxanne's attention) *I demand a trial by combat!* All jokes aside, Peter is absolutely lovely and so glad to see him in lead roles that showcase his talent!
I just finished watching this amazing movie. Peter Dinklage and Haley Benette did a wonderful job. It sure made me cry at the end. Excellent performance and great songs too.
That's... bold... I'm curious and yet very anxious. Rostand gave life to his characters through his words and even though I've seen a couple of good versions adapted in English, I can't really picture Cyrano without the words of Rostand. Plus, I know it's only a trailer, but here all I see is a love story, whereas the original text was so much more.
it's Cyrano for Disney fans. (sigh) Even though Dinklage could carry every single bit of Rostand's gorgeous dialogue with one hand tied behind his back.
I feel similarly. I hope the script remains more faithful than what the trail has shown. This Cyrano seems a bit soft compared to the wit and easily raised ire of Rostand’s Cyrano. I’m not excited for the musical numbers, but hopefully they’ll stay brief enough to not interfere
@@someonerandom8552 There isn’t a translation that does justice to Rostand’s text really. Try to watch the French movie with English subtitles - that’s the closest you’ll get from understanding the play yet hearing the musicality of the verses.
Cyrano is my FAVORITE literary hero, ever since I saw the French movie I have adored his character. And NOW one of my favorite actors is playing him?! AND ITS A MUSICAL?!?!?! Words can't even express how happy I am right now 💚💚💚
Saw this last night. This movie was exquisite. Loved everything about it. The music! The costumes! The setting! The acting! All of them fantastic! Especially loved Haley Bennet. So well done. Academy awards on movie and actors. OMG! Still humming the music.
This is one of my favorite trailers of all time. Honestly, the movie fell flat for me, but I still come back just to watch this trailer. It really inspires me.
I saw the play at the Goodspeed’s Terris Theater in CT a few years ago. How thrilling to be just a few feet away from this extraordinary actor!!! It was beautiful and wonderful and (obviously) so well acted. The entire cast was exceptional and some are in the movie. Mr Dinklage’s wife, Erica Schmidt, wrote this adaptation. The music is very fine as well. I’ve been waiting for the movie version! Can’t wait!!!!!!!!!
This was such a beautiful movie, everyone go see it now !!! Every actor is so good Petet is outstanding of course, the songs are great the dialogue witty and the ending is heart wrenching
I want to see him in a movie where you think he won’t get his happy ending… but then 💥BAM 💥 he does and lives happily ever after for a long time. I like when he has comical additions
I've only ever seen Roxanne with Steve Martin. I've considered watching a serious version of Cyrano before but now it's a must. Not sure how I feel about the musical aspect, but seeing Peter Dinklage in the lead role is more than worth it.
Seriously, I am absolutely crying buckets just from that minute & change!!! It looks so lovely & I can't think of anyone more gallant & fabulous to be Cyrano!!! Thank You!!
I’ve always thought Peter Dinklage was attractive and everyone laughs at me for that lol but it’s true, he has a good deal of charisma and screen presence.
I don't know what it is about him, but he's universally attractive. His facial expressions. His voice. The entonations. His face is also captivating. Some people just have it, and he's one of them.
Beautiful movie, I saw this tonight in Kent Ohio to find out again the actress who played Roxanne's grandma and other family members were in our row! We got the pleasure to talk to grandma after the movie and my fiance got to walk her to her car
This film looks so beautiful and inspiring, can’t wait to see it. Peter Dinklage is an amazing and beloved actor. Hope to see him in many more films and series. Bravo Peter!
I grew up with Peter when I was a kid. Saw him in "Oliver" when he was in middle school. Even then he had the bug. So happy that he has become so successful.
1:15-1:24 I think we can all resonate here. The emotion on Peter's face is that of a man who has just come to the realisation that the woman he loves (his friend) does not love him back. Instead she confides in him her love for a different man, unintentionally causing him a great deal of pain and heartache. I know because i have felt this pain before.
You can already tell from the trailer that they completely changed it. It will never be like the play. It's just a story inspired by the plot of cyrano.
@@toniab16 Well, it better be like what they did with Little Princess where it's only vaguely close but still a good story or else I'm going to be pretty upset. :(
I live a few kms from Bergerac and here I will quote Cyrano himself in scene VII: Cyrano, (hors de lui) à Le Bret -Maintenant... mais je vais être frénétique et fulminant! Il me faut une armée entière à déconfire! J'ai dix cœurs ; j'ai vingt bras ; il ne peut me suffire De pourfendre des nains... ooh the irony !!!
Man, I am so excited for this. As a writer and lover of words, to me this is truly the greatest love story of all time. I can't wait to see Dinklage play an unbelievable Cyrano! He deserves more lead roles.
@@kirkbespokeify hmm well Peter Dinklage is winning awards and married to a beautiful and successful woman and they have two beautiful kids sooooooo yeah your theory is incorrect! 😂
@@masuganut2082 Dinklage is a great actor and very successful, his net worth is $25 million and yet he has a very average looking partner. Not the type of woman a standard A list male star would be with.
I will see this twice in theatres at least. I can't wait until it's released. I have a soft spot for musicals and I know Peter will bring a stellar performance.
I was so excited to see Peter Dinklage in this role, but then I heard the singing...and the language. Why do all of the Cyrano adaptations have to "modernize" it or try to make it different? The play is absolutely beautiful on it's own. The language is part of the beauty of it.
Because the original isn't something for modern audiences? It's better to make it accessible for people to learn the story than replay the original like gospel and expect everyone to like it just the same. The latter option allows it to die in the dark.
@@sws212 Not sure whether your comment is more extreme than what you meant to say, but I just want to interject that the original version absolutely is for modern audiences because it transcends time. If done well, the story is accessible and relatable for us even when it uses the original language. I'm watching the play now and just marveling in a way that I probably wouldn't with a more modern adaptation. I guess I'm saying that I can see room for both. The modern adaptations give a fresh take for those of us who are already familiar with the work while drawing in new viewers, and (with any luck) some of them are inspired to experience the original version too.
Love that they chose to record the songs the actors sang right there, in the moment--no lip sync or overdub later. The breathlessness, the pauses, the hitch in the voices. BRILLIANT. When Haley flippantly tells him over her shoulder as she leaves that he was brave...Peter's delivery of 'I've done better since'...just top flight acting. You can see his heartbreak knowing he has to retreat behind that wall again. Very wise of Peter and his wife Erica to make this movie together!
If Peter Dinklage himself was here right now I would give him a hug and thank him.Cyrano De Bergerac introduced me to my greatest passion which is writing. I never thought there would be a new version of it.. I was surprised they included singing in it .I love it! I think Peter was an excellent choice. He is one of my favorite actors , so I look at this movie as double surprise : The movie itself and the fact that it's him who was chosen to play Cyrano. I can't wait to see it! It's going to be one of those movies I will treasure forever and would watch it again and again. Cyrano De Bergerac is and will always be special to me.
