After many request I put together a comparison between two of the most popular precision bolt action .22 Long Rifles on the market. The CZ 455 Tacticool (Retail $549) and CZ 455 Precision Trainer (Retail $940). Both have been slightly modified with Yo-Dave Trigger kits and aftermarket adjustable cheekrest (Southwest Precision on the Trainer and Mathews's Fabrication on the Tacticool).
Optics:
Precision Trainer has a Sightron SIII 10-50 x 60 MM w/ sunshade (Retail $1300), illuminated MOA reticle sitting atop a 20 moa DIP rail.
Tacticool has an SWFA Fixed 16 x 42mm Mil/Mil ($299) sitting atop a 20 MOA DIP rail.
Ammo Used:
- Wolf Match Target $63 per 500
- Lapua Center X $106 per 500
both are 40 gr bullets at roughly 1040-1100 FPS.
Bipods are both Harris Swivel Bi-Pods.
Distance is 27 yards for all tests.

Thanks for taking the time to do this video and the 5 part series on the Tacticool. I am just starting to get interested in precision shooting and after much debate had decided on a CZ 455, but had yet to figure out much else. Now I know I want a Tacticool and I have a really good base of information about (cost) effective modifications I can make to improve the rifle as I learn and grow in the sport.

When I am grouping to test ammo, I will always turn the elevation either up or down so that I don't shoot the centre of the target out. (eliminating the problem you encountered) That way you will always have the dot in the middle to align the cross hairs against and a nice consistent grouping to measure against. Then just return to zero after shooting! All the best from Canada EH;~) *awesome rifles BTW. Love my CZ 452 Varmint.

Thanks for the video. I am just getting into 22lr comps and had not thought about close in focus! For my .308, and .223W rifles it is about reaching out to infinity, but rimfire is another game. I have a few okay scopes to test and I think I will start with the Primary arms 4-14-44 as it has the open chevron ACSS reticle that should allow me to see all the crazy small targets without reticle blocking. Have fun, G.

I had intentions of installing the Yo-Dave Trigger Kit as recommended in this video, but after receiving & testing my new CZ 455 Varmint .22LR Heavy Barrel, the trigger is perfect from the factory. I don't know if CZ has started shipping the 455 with new improved triggers, but this trigger is perfect. Trigger has an estimated 2-lb pull...no take-up (and I mean zero take-up)...crisp break. The gun is brand new, and the trigger is already perfect. It can only get better with use.

I really enjoy your videos. They are full of great information. Can you please answer a question for me? Does the DIP rail adapter you use damage the receiver when you tighten the set screws? I am considering scope mounting options on my new CZ 455. I like the DIP rail adapter, but if I ever decided to remove it, I don't really want to see permanent screw marks on top of the receiver. Thanks in advance if you see this and take the time to respond.

Scope seems like a “ladies aid.” However, none of the manufacturers provide a dovetail for front sights....I put a “bloop tube” on the SR threads to carry the front aperture. $1300 for a scope?? Not in the budget at my house.

About the Harrris Swivel Bipods. What do you think that fits better in CZ 455? 1) S-BRM Hinged Base 6 - 9-Inch BiPod ? 2) Rotating Black Leg Notch 9"-13" SLM ?
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 9 лет назад
+De Lari Depends on where you're shooting from. Most of what we do is prone and the 6-9" is best and I prefer the notched legs. If you're shooting at high inclines, etc then a taller one may be helpful. I think you would be most happy with the 6-9 personally. That's what 90% of the guys at the match use.

Good video! How does a Ruger 10/22 with an aftermarket barrel like say the Tactical Solutions compair to your CZ Tacticool accuracy wise? Thanks!
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 8 лет назад
The top two rifles among the top 10 shooters month after month are the CZ455 (typically with a Lilja barrel) and the KIDD 10/22 supergrade. The Kidd supergrade can and does shoot as well as the cz (Liljabarreled) the majority of the time. The advantage of the Kidd is that it's semi auric which is very helpful in our tactical style matches. I haven't tested it so I can't say but if the 10/22 with a common aftermarket barrel shot as well as the cz then these guys wouldn't be spending $1800 on a Kidd supergrade. Prior to have my Lilja barrel I shot very well with the factory cz barrel but the Lilja did improve group size at further distances. So the answer is no I don't believe a 10/22 with just a common aftermarket barrel and no other enhancement would shoot as well as a cz455 but it's highly likely that someone with the right ammo, eyc could prove me wrong.

i was wondering on either gun what D.I.P rail you are using? I see they carry a few different variations and was wondering which one would be best. I was also wondering about how you changed your bolt knob on the VPT?
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 9 лет назад
J.C. Sheehan II I am using the DIP extended 25 MOA rail on mine. Bolt knob is tricky. I believe there is a guy that sells them on ebay. I have this one done by a local gun smith. LaRon Stokes in Northern Utah. The composition of the stem of the bolt knob is not stellar and has air pockets so you need a very competent gun smith that can weld in case they encounter an air pocket when they attempt to thread it. Mine was apparently a real pain. I have seen online a gentlemen that sells full replacement bolt stem/knobs. If you send him yours he will give you a discount on the one he sends you. He then takes it, threads it and sells it to next guy.

Why is the 16 inch barrel as good as an 18/20 inch, I understand that the scope dismisses the iron sight sighting length... Is it a complete powder-burn in the 16"? Seems to me that the longer barrel will increase the gyroscopic effect on the projectile, have a complete powder burn and mean less work for the suppressor...
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 9 лет назад
You would be right with the majority of center fire cartridges but with a 22 LR what I hear is that you really don't gain anything beyond about 16". If anything you're loosing velocity due to just the minimal amount of friction. All the powder is burned by that point. I'm not expert but that's what I have gleaned from speaking with professionals like the folks at Lapua. I haven't tested it myself though.

I just bought a CZ 455 Varmint .22LR Heavy Barrel. I am planing on buying the SWFA Fixed 10x42mm scope. How should I mount the scope to the integrated 11mm dovetail? I don't think the 20 MOA DIP Rail is for me. If I wanted to mount my scope directly to the 11mm dovetail, which rings do you recommend?
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 8 лет назад
+Edward Britton No I would strongly recommend teh 25 moa ext dip rail. The 25 MOA isn't going to hurt you in anyway. I run that and i zero at 25 yards. There are over 100 shooters in our club, 60-70 shoot every single month in the match and a huge portion shoot the 455. I've only seen one guy that mounts his rings direct to the dovetail and he is actually running 4 rings instead of the standard two. Just my $0.02.
@Edward-rg8mh
@Edward-rg8mh 8 лет назад
+Long Range Shooters of Utah Can you help me by providing a link to the 25 MOA Rail? Im not sure what a 25 MOA rail looks like. Does the 25 MOA include the rings, and does it attach directly to the 11mm dovetail? My scope will be the SWFA Fixed 10x42mm or 16x42mm. I did find a link to a 25 moa ext dip rail, but it requires attaching a Picatinny rail with screws to my dovetail. However, my new CZ 455 Varmint does not have threaded screw holes in top of dovetail. I still need your help. Thanks

Would you do a vid of the proper way to break in a cz 22lr and how you clean your barrel and how often
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 8 лет назад
+Ryan Moore I don't break in or clean my rifles. I clean the bolt and action of debris as needed but I don't touch the barrel unless accuracy starts to go south then I will but I've shot several thousand rounds down my lilja barrel without ever cleaning it and it still shoot lights out. Same with my centerfire rifles. If they are overbored magnum then I clean every 4-500 rounds to prevent a carbon ring but not more than that. What the video interview with John Krieger of krieger barrels he explains why he doesn't believe in break in or excessive cleaning either.

@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 8 лет назад
***** Ryan, we actually made a video testing different torque setting but due to wind noise it didn't turn out well. We'll be re-making it next chance I get so look for that. I'll be adding it to this series. This is my recommendation. Do to the range. Set up multiple targets at a given distance, maybe 50-75 yards. Torque your action screws to 15 in/lbs and shoot a 5-10 shot group. Then torque to 20 in/lbs and so on and compare the groups. If you're shooting the tacticool stock then I wouldn't recommend torquing more than 30, maybe 35 in/lbs because you'll crush your stock. On my Precision Trainer I think I have it at 30-40 in/lbs. As you will see the tighter it is the better it will shoot but be very careful as you're stock may crush at a 25 in/lbs.

I don't have personal experience with the savage rifles but I can tell you that in the 22 LR Marksmen Challenge competitions you rarely if ever see a savage in the Top 5. It's dominated by highly modified CZ 455's, Anshutz and Kidd Super Grades. So...they are good rifles but I'd say the CZ is better.

1LRLRG There are a wide range of makes but it's clear that those that are placing in the top 20 are either CZ 455 or High End Kidd customs (Custom 10/22 variant). Savages do pretty decent but the competition is dominated by CZ's, Kidds and Anshutz.

David Januszewski The savages aren't bad but they aren't as superior as the CZ. There are quite a few people that shoot them in our 22LR Marksman Challenge matches but you don't see any placing well. CZ's however seem to dominate as well as Anshutz and a few high end Kidd builds. I bought a lilja barrel for mine and had it threaded for a suppressor. @LongRangeShootersofUtah 6 лет назад
Yes they are. More and more each match. They had some feeding issues early on but it has been resolved and they are rapidly gaining popularity despite the price tag. They are exceptionally accurate and excellent rifles. I've considered getting one but I currently shoot a Kidd Supergrade which doesn't hold quite as tight of groups as the Vudoo but it's a semi-automatic which has an advantage at our matches. If you're looking for a true trainer to mimic your centerfire for practice then the vudoo is excellent. I've also learned of a custom rifle shop in NY state that will completely customize your CZ455 and the work is impressive.
@jaybigboy34
@jaybigboy34 6 лет назад
Long Range Shooters of Utah, LLC awesome! Could you share the company in New York? Also, with upgrades will the cz shoot as tight as the vudoo?
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 6 лет назад
I don't have the info on the company in New York but if you google Long Island or NY custom CZ455 I'm sure you'll find something. Shooting "Tight" is a factor of the shooter, the barrel, ammo and trigger. If the CZ has a good shooter, a match barrel from Lilja or other ammo that has been lot tested for that rifle and a good trigger than it will shoot well. The one I shot didn't shoot as well as the Vudoo but it was shooting $65 per brick wolf practice ammo that wasn't lot tested where the Vudoo was shooting top shelf Eley ammo that was tested by Eley for that rifle. If you have the money and want to take the easy route then get a Vudoo and be done with it. Prior to my Kidd I competed with a CZ455 Precision trainer with a lilja barrel, I think it can hang with the vudoo or close too it precision wise (group size wise) but the overall function had it's flaws. My trigger was too light so my bolt catch didn't always work.

Is the CZ 455 varmint the best bet in accuracy for $450? What scope do you recommend for 50 yard benchrest at $400? I'm starting out but want to keep the whole kit n' caboodle under $1k. Thanks for the help
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 7 лет назад
For benchrest I would think that you'd want as high of magnification as possible. I'm not sure I have a good option for $500. I highly recommend the Sightron 10-50 x 60 but they run $799 at best. Check out SWFA.com as they may have a sale on them right now. The SWFA fixed power optics are solid and I think they sell a 20x but that's it. Sightron had some higher magnification fixed options but I'm not sure if they still make them. If you can swing it the Sightron SIII 10-50 is the way to go.

@captainpegs0740 7 лет назад
Thank you for the quick reply. For the precision shooting you guys do at varying ranges 25yrds-100yrds, would the SIII 10-50x60 still be the best route or would a first focal plane scope be better? In this case, how would you set the magnification on the SIII?
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 7 лет назад
Captainpegs07 I run an SIII 10-50 on one rifle and an SV 10-50 on the other so the answer is yes. These are the best optics for the shoots we do. FFP would be beneficial on some stages but the high magnification is more so. I typically run most of the match at 24x which is were the scope is index .

Where do you get Lapua Center X for $10.55/ 50 Rd Box ? Why are you shooting at 27 yds.? At 25yds there should be only a one hole group 🥴 That is not a valid comparison what a CZ or the ammo can do

I founded Long Range Shooters of Utah first as a facebook group. We now have 3000 members. Several of them are dealer, FFL's, etc and also shoot in the same 22 only competitions that I do. They buy match ammo by the case so it's fairly easy to get. Sorry, I don't know where exactly they get it but I know it's from standard online retailers. They use an alert system and are constantly watching for it to come in stock. Sorry I can't help more.

The most popular optic at the 22 LR Marksmen Challenge is the SIghtron S3 or SV 10-50x! When you're shooting match sticks, toothpicks and playing cards in half at 50 yards or trying to spot shots at 100 yards you need the magnification.

Yes, someone the other day said "man that has a short barrel" I said no, it's the standard length, same as yours but the scope is massive. It's true. To get 10-50 x magnification it's gotta be long and needs that 60 mm objective to gather enough light.

Have you had a chance to re-test these rifles?
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 8 лет назад
No I haven't but keep in mind that from the factory they are the same rifle just sitting in different stocks. The comparison is really unfair because the optics are far from equal, we were running ammo enough to weed out all factors and other things. I firmly believe if we had to rifles straight from the factory they would shoot the same barring any faults in production and if the barrels on both were not abnormally affected by the stock. I hope that helps. In short I don't think the precision trainer is going to out shoot the tacticool with any significance unless something is wrong with it. I'm confident that a tacticool with a Lilja barrel and tuned trigger would out shoot a precision trainer and visa versa.

Awful groups for 25 yards on a bipod. Is that the rifle's fault, it can't shoot without accurizing and that's why so many CZ videos don't show actual group shots?

its a manners stock on the precision trainer. its probably a $500 stock if you bought it separately from the rifle is why its alot more expensive. the black one just has a boyds tacticool stock on it.

I found this video deeply upsetting and distressing ! My CZ Trainer wouldn't shoot with any ammunition. Payed $200 for a trigger job, replaced the factory barrel with a Lilja match $450, installed a new series 10x Nightforce $1600, added rails, knobs, etc. As a last ditch attempt, I replaced the Manners stock with a $1200 McMillan A40 ........ and hey, presto So now I'm left to fathom the question, should I have just bought the bloody Anschutz with the 54 action, and been done with it !?!? :(

+Ace Precision You're is the first I've heard of someone having that much of a struggle with a CZ. If you changed out all that stuff then I can't imagine it still having any issues. You practically replaced the whole rifle. I'm left scratching my head. I'm not sure how I could help. Many guys in our competitions have gone with Anshutz, one even when with a $3500-4000 setup and after two matches he sold it and went to a Kidd Supergrade. He said he just couldn't get it to shoot like his CZ or Kidd.

In perusing DIP's web site at www.diproductsinc.com/Products.aspx?CAT=4268, their specs indicate that the slanted base is at an angle of 25 MOA. I'm contemplating scope / base / ring options. 25 MOA seems awfully steep. If most of my shooting will be at 25 - 100 yards for a while, would I be better off with a level base?
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 7 лет назад
No I would still get the 25 moa base. That's what I run and I can dial down below 25 yards. Our competition are 25 yards to 200 yards. With this base I have no issues at 25 yards on either of my rifles and I can shoot out to 300 yards or so too.

Why does the DIP rail have multiple retaining screws on the far ends of the rail. Are they for zeroing the scope with its turrets centered, maybe? Is the extended rail really necessary? Tremendously appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge and experience. :)
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 7 лет назад
mark teague They are not for that reason. Should just be for mounting. The extended-ness of it has no downside. Keep in mind that centerfire actions are much longer and most optics are designed for centerfire so the extension gives you more room, especially because you should be using an Anti-Cant Bubble Level which limits where you can put the rings on the optic. The more rail you have the more options you have. There is no downside. Just take my word for it. Get the extended dip rail.

do you need to break the barrel in ?
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 9 лет назад
syson100 My belief is that on match grade centerfire barrels there is no need to break them in as they are hand lapped. Just run a patch thru before the first shot and that's it. For rimfires I don't bother doing a break in. Each rimfire barrel is unique, some shoot better dirty/ fouled (which is my experience with centerfires) but others like to be clean. In general my experience is that a barrel needs to be fouled which makes sense because it's more consistent. If you clean it then each shot changes the characteristics of the barrel as it gets more and more fouled. I my experience this holds true but may not with rimfires. You'll need to do your own testing but I didn't bother with a break in of either the factory barrel or the lilja that I recently installed on my CZ 455.

Give me a break !!!!!!!! 27 M ! I can throw rocks almost that accurately. Yep that's great if you fall over a rabbit and happen to pull the trigger as you hit the ground. In the real world with rabbits your looking at 25 m - 125 m as a usual indicator when taking shots in Australia, sometimes out to whatever your skill and experience will allow. I have seen head shots at 250 m with .22. Walked out distance so allow + - 10 m. Yep seen it time and again with just a simple Anschutz .22 LR with no special preparation. I used to practice with open sights at 125 m when I was much younger, and all shots were inside a matchbox with Stirling or Winchester ammo. Shooting is about accuracy and precision. A .22lr sighted at 75 m is an excellent example of rifle and rifleman precision at both lessor and greater distances ( and I am talking with open sights), and if you want to test ammo then at least pick what .22 lr is used at ie 25 m - 125 m +. I am older now and my eyes don't work so good but I can still clip 200 m everyday, ( yep i have my own range to test to 400 m) depending on cross and head winds, with a scope on the first or definatly the 3rd shot. And I am talking about a stock Anschutz .22 built 40 years ago using commercial Winchester / CCI ammo and a Viper 1 st plane scope scope. While I appreciate your efforts, at least make them real to what the ammo is designed for. 25 m is falling over a rabbit and clubbing it to death. 50 m is well I just got the rifle up in time. 75 m is well lets aim and take the shot. 100 m well lets take a bit of extra care. 200 m well lets take our time and be really careful with our shot. While I appreciate your effort, you have told me nothing about what these rifles are capable of achieving with the capability of a .22 at various distances. Please be more critical and analytical Regards Rob Marx
