This journey down the rabbit hole takes a detour, when I bring a stock CZ452 out to compete against the CZ455.
No worries the Lithgow is coming back out with the Lapua Exact and we may just throw the Christensen Ranger 22 in the mix also.

my bet is the temps bit ya. Just a swag but my theory is a change in temp the barrel harmonics which threw the tuner for a loop. Also the rifle's point of support from the sand bags to the rest and bunny bag can do the same. It wasn't wind judging from the bush and trees in the background. Great shooting with the 452 though,another great video btw

I built a 10/22 with a ER Shaw barrel and needless to say it will shoot better than most bolt actions I’ve seen on RU-vid. Better than the CZs even! At 50 yards it’s .23” with subsonic ammo. I’m able to shoot - 4” target at 150 effortlessly. 22lr is awesome for practice and I’m surprised how accurate that thing was for sure! Had several people wanting to buy it but I think I’ll hold on to it for a while. Ended up building 2 identical guns and my dad now has the other one and uses it to take out squirrels around his house. Loves it and I doubt I’ll ever get it back lol

Since you asked, I'd rather have the 455 with Harrell tuner because you can adjust it to your ammo and get better groups in the long run. I have a J&L tuner by Joe Chacon on one of his barreled actions and it shoots fantastic when I'm on. Good to see you got that new Protector bag; your groups will get better and better when using it!

I have a friend that is a very a serious 22 long rifle shooter he shoots 50 & 100 yard benchrest. One thing i see him do one buy the animal in large bulk pack same lot number. And two he will get a scale and Away each individual 22 cartridge then separate them by their differences then packaging them by their weight difference. I do not know if this makes that much of a difference or not but he thinks it does. I shoot a 452 factory ultra-luxe with a 28" Barrel I shoot Winchester 40 grain at a hundred yards it gives me three quarters of an inch. Plenty good enough for me this is mine rabbit hunting rifle I also have a 455 v 17 HMR and a 455 Lux 22LR / 22MAG combo. If you ever want a very accurate 22 LR pistol get a 75 B / SA add a kadet kit. Something I would be very interested and is a fast twist Barrel about 16 and 1/2 in to stabilize the idea 60 grain subsonic sniper cartridge. 1 in 9 / 1 in 8 twist threaded for a suppressor.

I always get an occasional flyer with "off brand" ammo like Wolf, SK and Fiocchi. Never a problem with Eley, Lapua or RWS. My current favorite is Eley Benchrest Outlaw. Found a good Lot and bought 2,000 rds @ $4.25 a box. It is downgraded Benchrest Precision. Vertical stringing can be caused by improper action screw torque. Try different torque settings.

@burtburrell7609
@burtburrell7609 4 года назад
Joe D Just my experience, but screwing around with action screw torque only helps if your rifle isn't bedded correctly. Changing torque on a poorly bedded rifle causes tension and distortion of the action, changing your point of impact. A properly bedded action has only one place to sit and changing the torque settings does not add tension to the action since it is fully supported, and the action has only one place to sit, so the receiver is always consistent.
@joed3264
@joed3264 4 года назад
@@burtburrell7609 None of my .22s are bedded. I have found the sweet spot to be in a 22-25 in/lb range. Otoh my modified 10/22 has a Titan stock. It utilizes an aluminum plate for the action screw and an additional screw in the rear to push the receiver up. I did bed my old 10/22 as it was in a B&C stock.

First, get some Eley Match. The ammo you’re shooting is garbage and is very inconsistent. You will never get consistent groups with inconsistent ammo. Second, when you’re getting the Eley, get two different batches that are 15-20 FPS apart. The box lists the speed it shot in their test barrels. Why get two different speeds? Because that’s what you need in order to set up a tuner. A tuner is for dialling out vertical due to speed differences. And so we need two different speeds to test with. The point of a tuner is to allow you to dial in what is called positive compensation. You want to tune the barrel so that slower rounds are aimed higher, and faster rounds are aimed lower. This results in all rounds having the same point of impact. In order to tune it so that this happens you need to have some known faster and slower rounds so that you can make adjustments for the behaviour of each. It should be noted that you can only tune for one specific target distance. By its very nature, a barrel that is in tune for 59 yards will be out of tune for 100 yards. So you should be doing these tests at 59 yards if you will be shooting your targets at 50 yards. Or do the tests at 100 yards if you regularly shoot your targets at 100 yards. Tuner settings will be different for different target distances so you must test at the regular shooting distance. Say you can get some Eley Match that lists 1060 FPS and some that lists 1075 FPS. If you had a magic barrel that did not move then the 1060 FPS rounds would hit lower than the 1075 FPS rounds. But since we all have barrels that vibrate, how they short compared to each other can differ. But we have the capability to change where those rounds hit via the tuner. And we can dial it in to remove that vertical difference. And once we do so, the tuner setting will be found and should be left alone, as it will be the correct setting for all ammo and speeds. The exact speeds aren’t important, but they should be different by at least 15 FPS in order to make testing easier. And you don’t want to use anything worse than Match because you’re just introducing more ammo inconsistency. You want ammo at least as consistent as Eley Match. Eley Tenex would be even better, but is also more expensive. You get what you pay for. Anyway... Normally this method is shot with a tuner that has 500 graduations. I believe the tuner you have only has 150 graduations, so we will reduce our usual steps to 1/3 of normal to adjust for the difference between 150 and 500. Start with the tuner at zero. Start shooting a single 10-shot group, but follow these steps. Shoot one slow round and one fast round. Move the tuner by 7.5 and shoot one more slow round and fast round to the same point of aim. Move another 7.5 to 15, and shoot another slow and fast. Move another 7.5 to 22.5 and shoot another slow and fast. Move another 7.5 to 30, and shoot another slow and fast. This will make a ten shot group. Now we will move on to the next group. The tuner will be on 30 from the last shots, and we will leave it on 30 to start the next 10-shot group. As before, shoot one slow round and one fast round at 30. Then move 7.5 to 37.5 and shoot one slow and one fast round. Move another 7.5 to 45 and shoot a slow and fast. Another 7.5 to 52.5 and shoot a slow and fast. Move another 7.5 to 60 and shoot a slow and a fast. That will complete the second 10-shot group. So we will again move on to another new group. Start the new group where we finished the last again. On 60, shoot a slow and fast. Move 7.5 to 67.5 and shoot a slow and a fast. Move 7.5 to 75 and shoot a slow and a fast. Move 7.5 to 82.5 and shoot a slow and a fast. Move to 90 and shoot a slow and a fast. That will complete our third 10-shot group. Move on to the next. 90, shoot a slow and a fast. 97.5, shoot a slow and a fast. 105, a slow and a fast. 112.5, a slow and a fast. 120, a slow and a fast to complete 10-shot group number four. Move on to the next. 120, a slow and a fast. 127.5, a slow and a fast. 135, a slow and a fast. 142.5, a slow and a fast. And finally, 150, a slow and a fast. That will complete five separate 10-shot groups. Each group will be made up of five slow rounds and five fast rounds, paired up at each tuner setting used. We will have tested the entire tuner range and will have only used up 50 shots so far. Now what? One of the groups should show less vertical than the others. Don’t worry about horizontal. We are concerned more with vertical. So measure all the groups and find the one that shows the least vertical. For the sake of argument, let’s say the group from 60 to 90 had the smallest amount of vertical. So somewhere between 60 and 90 is where we should find the sweet spot. So we will shoot some more, focusing only on this smaller tuner range. 60: shoot dice slow and five fast rounds for a 10-shot group 67.5- new group, five slow, five fast 75- new group, five slow, five fast 82.5- new group, five slow, five fast 90- new group, five slow, five fast Measure the groups and again focus on the one that shows the least vertical. Let’s say the group at 75 showed the least vertical. Shoot some more groups at these intervals. 70, five slow, five fast... 72.5 Already have a 75 so skip it. 77.5 80 Measure those groups and again examine the vertical. Say the 77.5 group had the smallest vertical. Shoot a few more groups focused there. 76, five slow, five fast... 77 78 79 Say 78 showed the smallest amount of vertical. You’ve already got a 77.5 group, so shoot one more at 78.5 and that should zoom you right into your final setting. What you should now have is a tuned barre that is giving you positive compensation for billet velocity. Slow rounds and fast rounds should have the same point of impact. This should give you the smallest groups possible. And this setting should work in exactly the same fashion for any and all ammo that you shoot with. If it does not, then there is a problem with the amount of weight the tuner is adding to the barrel. A more complicated test would be necessary in order to determine that, however. Now that you have found the setting with that test, try shooting some five-shot groups with just one speed of ammo. They should be pretty good groups now. And this setting should give you the best groups with any ammo you try from then on. You have tuned the barrel to vibrate at just the right speed in order to compensate for speed difference in the ammo. Any ammo. At least, any speed when shooting at that distance. Again, the tune only works at one distance. You will have to go through the same routine at a different distance to find the tune for the other distance. Hope that helps. You can find the math involved over here if you’re interested. www.geoffrey-kolbe.com/articles/rimfire_accuracy/tuning_a_barrel.htm

Clayton thank you for the AWESOME details I do appreciate you taking your time to post such a detail thorough post. This is similar to the Hopewell method that I have used in the past but with CenterX ammo. Fiocchi 320 is supposed to be in that same league as CenterX. This test was spurred on by a few folks in Australia where Fiocchi 320 is prevalent as well as the Lithgow rifle, they encouraged this was the best they had seen in the Lithgow rifle. If nothing more it was fun trying it. Eley Match right here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jPg90TqRRRk.html -- Thanks again WOW nice post.
@ClaytonMacleod
@ClaytonMacleod 3 года назад
@@Dayattherange The key is doing it with two different speeds to make the results more obvious. It is just the Hopewell method translated from 500 steps to 150 steps for the different tuner. But since the goal is to compensate for different speeds the test is better done with ammo that are two different speeds. It is much, much harder to tell if you’re getting warmer or colder if you’re just using a single lot of ammo. With two different lots that are known to be different speeds it makes the dialling in and measuring job much more obvious.

@@ClaytonMacleod Yes that is what was enlightening to me about your post. The very first time I tried this I just swapped 2 boxes of ammunition CenterX with a buddy knowing it was from different lots but I actually did not research the advertised speed. I thought different lot numbers were good enough but it could have been they were to close in speed though from different lots. One day on a good day I will give it a try again. I would like to do this at the 100 yard indoor range but goodness the hourly fee and not to mention just not a good stable rest for good results but it would defeat the wind I deal with everyday here.
