I have a 2 year degree in precision machining, I am not a practicing machinist, nor was I ever, and was never great at it, but watching the explanations you are giving, everything made sense to me, you clearly think this stuff through, and it's fun watching a craftsman apply his trade.
You're the man Kenny! I am so happy and proud of your work! Being an Iscar rep I will gladly say you are on top of your game and spared no expense on quality machinery! Unlike many machinist in the world, you understand rigidity and think outside the box on how to machine accurate barrels and actions. Thanks for sharing and keep up the amazing work!
Thanks brother! I still got you in mind for any iscar questions. Definitely let me know if thiers any tooling I need to look into. I spare no expense as you can tell lol
I had never seen the precision these machine can achieve. But, you are the expert behind the end product. Congratulations and thank you for showing the process.
The ingenuity and attention to detail make these builds worth every penny. Amazing to see you continue to push the upper bound of precision and accuracy.
I just ran across this channel today as I've been shooting more and more rimfire as of lately. Being a past cmm driver for engine components in the past this precision machining is you get what you pay for. Great channel, going to look for your website now. New subscriber for sure.
Solid outcome raising that level 22 up several rungs on the ladder my friend. Nice to see your dedication and, " hitting it outta' the park ". Congratulations on a job well done young man! Respectfully, Seth
Hey man. Thanks for wandering over to Josh's gig Sun night. Myself and others really do appreciate your input in the chat. What's next? The DPG action + barrel combo rather than relying on someone else's action? What would you do differently than the other guys?
Awesome video with a fantastic explanation of why a threaded action and barrel is better than a prefit barrel and also that the longer barrel makes it less picky with ammunition. Thanks for showing this.
Great video. Love the detail and the explanation of what goes into these awesome builds. I love the dedicated 22lr CZ 457 platform and am genuinely impressed with how good it can be with this level of attention to detail. Well done, sir.
So much great info in the video! Your attention to detail as usual, now paired with the new machinery is really making some unmatched rifles. The proof is in the results. Dorys new threaded CZ is an absolute beast and outshoots my vudoos. My next rifle will most definitely have one of your in house barrels. Also, really funny how you use an adjustable wrench for the action haha
@@EagleEyeShooting one of my roomates in Sandy Eggo was a river rat. Spent some time in Yuma myself. 'Interesting' town. Coming from Sandy Eggo it was always bloody hot there. Then I moved to Tucson and realized it's only bloody hot after about 110. Till then, it's livable
Awesome work and I dig the attention to detail resulting in repeatability. I just want to know when you are going to spin up a barrel for the Marlin 39A you have hanging on the wall.. that would be a super fun build 🫡 Thanks Kenny... keep rocking 😎
I fell for the CZ rimfire hype. Ended up getting a very nice bull barreled thumb hole stocked CZ 457. It was chambered for 22 long rifle and had one huge problem. The first shot of the day would always be about 5 in away from point of aim at 50 yards. Randomly anywhere. After that it would group dime size groups until you let the rifle sit for a few hours. Sitting for one solid hour didn't do it. Something about the rifle being in the AC would make the first shot wild. And I wanted it for varmint hunting so this pretty much made the rifle useless. Sent it to CZ three different times with no help. They claim they couldn't repeat the problem. Which is funny cuz it didn't care what ammo you put in it it had the same problem for the first shot of the day every single time. I didn't want to rifle that I had to walk out fire around off and then hopefully trust it when I finally see something to shoot at after the fact. Sold the rifle at a loss, and picked up a base model 457 that did the same damn thing. Returned it for my money back and have not bothered with CZ since.
Now that you're threading these receivers and you feel the recoil lug and bedding surface is lacking. Why don't you add a recoil lug like a Remingtion action? I understand that there will be limitations on stock options. However, they could be pillar bedded back on to the factory MTR wood stock, or maybe you or another Smith can fit it onto a currently available chassis with a little additional work.
@@Do-UR-Research2749 no need for a recoil lug... theirs no "recoil" in a 22lr to put the action under stress. The rear lug and chassis screws are more than adequate to hold rigid
Great video, Kenny...and I thought you were taking the 4th off! Bottom line for me is that my budget for one of your 457 barreled-actions came into being at about the same time you acquired the machinery and moved to threaded barreled-actions. I'm two months into the wait period so I will probably revisit this video a time or two (read "a dozen times" 😂) before mine arrives. Ray (Athens, GA)
Croissant Wrench! 😂😂😂 Dude, this is outstanding! I'm so excited for mine! And now the 10/22 build too. I can see this is a long-term labor of love and that takes time...Time to develop and time to make. But, I'd rather have steak off a grille seared to perfection than steak out of a microwave. Perfection takes time and this is The Delmonico not McDonald's. 😂 I think I'm going to have to commission a Benchrest build next. Maybe you can talk me into one next time we talk. Good talking to you today. Keep the steel shavings flying. 🍻
@@EagleEyeShooting Deal. That said... I've experienced your workmanship firsthand. I already know I want at least one of EVERYTHING you make! Might take us a few years, but I know what I like, and I know who I trust. We're going to build a lot of projects together over the next decade. (Lord willing of course)
Sweet work Kenny Bit jealous of you project...like the ideas. Pity the extractor cuts are so close to the chamber was my first impression..as per the 457 barrel nuts beng so close to the chamber and vibrations. But....I guess that's an unavoidable necessity... Good on you!
Great video on the amount of dedication hard work and ingenuity that goes into your work and why upfront it seems expensive but in the long run will save money. Keep up the hard work and I look forward to ordering one soon from you. Cheers
@tomallen. I'm kinda with you on this. I have 3 different .22lr's that do 3 shot groups at 50 yards+ with all 3 holes touching. Can't think of a reason to mess with that. I guess if I was competing with guys who make 1 hole every time with 3 shots I might think about it. Also any gun is limited to the what the shooter can do. Bells and whistles do not equal skill. With that said, the knowledge and machining skills the guy has in this video are quite impressive.
Thanks for your time. I am not Mashinist but enjoy your explanations. Can't wait for BR video. Don"t really understand why you don't apply those " BR secrets" to PRS rifles (understanding difference on accuracy expectations by both discipline) . By end of the day everybody is looking for most accurate rifle isn't it ? Shooting good with few different ammo is head space lucky number right? But up to some point where ammo capabilities dictate results. On 50 yards my rifle shoot 5 different brands with same results. On 100 yards things start divide and 200+ one brand stands out. Really wanna see this rifle and shooting ammo from 5$ up to 30 $ per box on 150 -200 yards . My custom barrel is glued to the 455 action ( with proper squaring and hand space ext ) and is something between yours heat and tread fitted rifles. What do you this about gluing fit like mine? Thanks
As I briefly explained in the video (I know it's long) I can't use tight chambers as I would in a small bore BR build. You will loose ability to extract reliably. The barrels are also built different, causing a cold bore shift. Something a PRS displines cannot afford to have as you will drop points. Glued CZ457 barrels are not a solid inference fit. Just like any epoxy based substance, it will flex. Theirs loctite 680 or equivalent that is a better option but still not as good as thermal fitting or just having it threaded. It's just a nightmare to remove. Perfect example why I don't take in people's CZ457 actions. Folks just FUBAR the system and expect the same results
@@EagleEyeShooting My rifle is with loctite and it takes very little preheat and small hydraulic hand press for barrel to come out. Interesting point on different barrels build and cold bore shift. What cause cold bore first and/or what's difference on those two type of barrels and most important how one barrel build dictate cold bore shift to be present or not? Would be nice to learn more about this . We just went into a rabbit hole and I know how valuable your time is.
@cz503 if heat loosens the loctite, I guarantee its not the best loctite to use. A retaining compound is what is recommended to fill voids. I would look into Loctite 680 as its designed for cylindrical slip fitted applications like how the CZ457 barrel is designed. Loctite 648 for high heat applications like an AR15 barrel. It's a PITA to thoroughly clean out of the action tennon area once applied however
Excellent video. Can’t wait till I can save the money to order one of these to go along with my thermal fit that you did. I’d say the biggest downfall for me on the 457 is the lack of triggers that are on the market. There isn’t a two stage out there and the selection is tiny compared to the 700 footprint actions. While the triggers that are available are nice they just aren’t what I would like and I think the other actions have that advantage over the 457… just not enough of an advantage to make me want to switch platforms. I think the 457 community is blessed to have you. Sadly it seems we may have lost one of the other big contributors to the 457 being able to overtake Vudoos and Rim-Xs in competition; Bill Scaramuzzo. His triggers were the absolute best for the 457. Sadly it seems he’s out of the picture. I have one of his two stage triggers and I wish I would have bought four of the dang things when all I thought I needed was one. I wish someone would start making them to his design and specs cause I’d buy a bunch of them. It’s so much better than the Jard or Timney. I wouldn’t trade that trigger for a complete build 457 if you put a gun to my head. Someone needs to put out a good two stage for the 457!!! Do you have thoughts on two other possible shortcomings of the CZ; that being the scope mounting interface not being as secure as some other actions and the fact that the bolt lockup is asymmetrical (ie only one lug)? Obviously the 457 leaves some things to be desired but it’s still great. Looking forward to seeing your benchrest build video to see what fine little details you squeeze to make a gun even more accurate than the CZ you put together in this video.
Hello I would like to write some corrections here. 1) Actions are not casted but machined from solid crome moly steel rods. Steel casting is only used for steel pistol frames in CZ 2) action is not parkerized but nitrided like most of steel parts made in CZ. There are some exceptions that are blued but many. 3) barrels are not button rifled but cold hammer forged. CZ only uses cold hammer forging for everything from rimfire rifles, through pistols, Scorpions to Brens.
Your incorrect. The actions are casted, I broke a few in half by accident. That's how I know. Saw casting voids and could not successfully tig weld without using a lot of gas The finish is parkerized some have been melonite coated. This was verified at a local nitride company as I was sourcing options to make the action slicker I didn't state that the factory barrels are button rifled. MY Barrels are You need to check facts before trying to correct. Also, liking your own comment is hilariously conceded of you.
Kenny, that was quite informative. If one is in the market for your services would you recommend a particular type of CZ457 to begin with, send it to you and then you customize for me? Is their some price guides? I'm not looking to nickel and dime a craftsman but this would be a "save for" item for me personally. Thanks and keep up the amazing craftsmanship.
Very informative video. its not that long when its fully packed with information. unfortunately my location can't gain access to your shop. if only, ill be there already with my rifle.
Hi Kenny I have been following this journey for awhile now. I am a bit torn. With a buy once cry once mind set I would really value your thoughts on the cz457 threaded barrel set up or the RimX with the cut out option you have to remove the push feed? Thanks!!!
Kenny another great video of you explaining your detailed process. make's me want to get a third rifle from you. I am interested in getting one of those 1.25 muzzle brakes for my 6ARC from you. I will contact you soon.
Hi Kenny - Love your work, a perfectionist! My brother was a good machinist so I have an appreciation for this work. I am leaning towards getting a CZ 457 and from your shop. I do have a question about your newer threaded barrel process. I hope it wasn't already answered. Are you 'facing' the reciever's barrel insertion end to match perfectly with the barrel shoulder? I know other rifles seem to benefit from this practice. It is more time consuming as you may need to measure how much is faced off and add it to the barrel measurement. Best Regards -Bob
@robertgartner6072 hey Robert, if your referring to the receiver face. Yes, I square up the receiver face where the shoulder of the barrel meets the receiver. I usually take out anywhere from 1 to 4 thou. This video, I removed 3 tho. At the end of this video I actually have a diagram of this receiver that I drew and showed how a prefit would sit if this action wasn't trued up
Greetings Sir, I have been following your work with great interest. I have one question. When threading the barrel and receiver on the CZ 457, What is the thread size size and pitch. Thank you for your time
hi, great video! did not know this about the cz457, just got my approval on my CZ457 varmint. You made me think a bit. Your process is some of best i have seen. Wondering if any of the gunsmiths here in South Africa done this for the Cz457. Thank you for the content.
Just a good natured comment (mostly in jest) Fellow RU-vidr BlondieHacks would make a custome wrench for that action. Gotta love Quinn. A love of precision has many expressions.
Lol great channel. Out of necessity and lack of time, I can easily make a action wrench for a CZ457 if I wanted to. But a good Cresent hammer wrench works just as well
Hey Kenny! Great video. Would it be possibe to thread a Tikka T1X action? I’ve heard the barrel change is kind of a pain because the action has an ovoid shape and maybe threading it eliminates the problem and a blank can be customized.
I didn’t take any pictures so I guess it didn’t happen but the owner brought this gun to my range Crum Ridge Rimfire and i got to put 50-60 rds though it. Nice
Day at the range host monthly challenges. It's not all about group shooting, theirs many challenges. This encompasses all aspects of precision small bore shooting in a friendly competitive community. It's a great way to connect, prove your worth and meet other like minded folk. Anyone can claim their rifles shoot better than others in youtube comments. Prove it
He’s not worth commenting on sounds like a hunting camp my grand paw has 100 years old black powder rifle that shoot quarter inch groups at 100 yards haha😂
Great video Kenny!! I only wish I could send you my 455 action for this custom barrel fitment since I already have it in a fully decked out MDT ACC chassis and found out the hard way that my newer 457's will not fit in that chassis since they moved the bolt handle position !!! I was really disappointed that I'm pretty much stuck with an almost obsolete action chassis now but please lmk if that's something you could work with? Thanks either way
@joevangorder1006 absolutely, it's definitely on my mind. I know someday I will be able to allow gunsmithing on clients rifles. As of right now, It's just me and having to balance all of this. Its just not fair to hold onto your rifle for months until I can get to it. Same goes with the new builds....
Well I can definitely appreciate that sir, thanks for getting back so quick on this too!! If that day ever comes though, please just let me know and I'll have my action overnighted to ya lol
@@EagleEyeShooting The Anschutz 2013 barrel is clamped into the action from the factory. The action is square and has 4 clamping screws. Would you consider installing one of your barrels on a 2013? 1/2" groups at 100 yards is incredible! The only difference on a prone rifle would be thinner diameter (normally 0.900).
Did you have to make it look so damn good??? Not all your viewers are lucky enough to live in the states and have to go through some crazy paperwork to actually acquire one. Just make it ugly so I do t want one so bad. lol I miss the wildcat vids Kenny. I get it though. You come up with great ideas and the big companies steal it. But we know where the credit is due
Would a grinder attachment on your lathe be an option to get that melanite finish off? Or does that cause all kinds of problems as well, including having to adjust for the grinding stone wearing out?
Man... that would make my life so much simpler.... why can't they just do this to began with. The CZ452 was threaded, no sure why they changed over to this stupid grub screws other than to chinse out in quality in lieu of production
@@EagleEyeShooting Understood Kenny. Mate you just keep on making these CZs more accurate than what the famous CZ factory can make them and they might finally wake up lol 😂.
@@EagleEyeShooting If I'm not mistaken, CZ went to the slip-fit barrels on the 457 to make chaning the barrel easier. However, I wonder how many people actually swap barrels back and forth that much on their CZs...
@@EagleEyeShooting I Dont say it because of cost. It just seems to me that when the reciever and bolt are original, it may be time to think up another name for it :) Armoured car manufacturers build on an F550 frame, but dont sell their product as a modified F550. Dont take it the wrong way, its only a friendly comment. I enjoy your videos on the subject. Annoyingly I live in a country where once a barrel is shot out, you may aswell change the fire arm as the paperwork for a new barrel is far too much. Im not sure what all the F-class shooters do about this.
I'm confused in what your saying.. I use both but a manual lathe does not have live tooling nor can you mill turn threads. Theirs advantages to both systems. I use the strengths on both cnc and manual lathes
Out of curiosity, is it possible to (you mentioned it in the beginning) to have a 22lr barrel and a 17hmr barrel that are threaded and prefit spun up for a 457 american action that you thread? I would like to be able to swap them, not super frequently, but I want the ability to.
@@EagleEyeShootingI am getting several switch barrels in my safe these days. If YT will allow better linkage to your business, it will help find you. I love your content, and would be very interested in getting your product.
We currently using Grey Birch LDR 10/22 receivers. They are a threaded receiver. I have some videos about these on my channel. Sorry, I can't link per YT crapolicies
Seems like a lot of work to accurate a sub par action compared to a RimX or Voodo? I know there a lot of CZ lovers - I own one - but why not just run a custom?
@thegriff9425 I guess most folk have a preference and already have a lot of CZ mags and or a chassis. It's also about 1K cheaper to build as a custom vs the 700 custom actions
watching r700 / vudoo guns choke on those finicky mags in a match and the tinkering required to get them to run. Forget it. cz mags have been working great for decades.
Dude, your work is clearly top class. The attention to detail is just mind blowing. (For a none engineering person.) After all that effort, why use an optic that is...... suspect? After trying to get 100 % accuracy to use an optic that is not know for being "that good". I find it confusing. Why not use a know quantity like your normal zeiss scope. It seems you could introduce unwanted issues are trying to make everything perfect.
@martin2514 valid point, I'm always trying to find options that are budget friendly as an option for my clients or those who ask my recommendation. As I started my journey and this channel using 30$ Amazon scopes shoot factory rifles past 2000 yards lol. I've thoroughly check this scope in a tall target and box test for any correction factor. So I'm confident it's holding true and not inducing flaws in my shot or my ability to see the target clearly. The trigger cam footage does not represent the scope clearly. I personally would recommend this scope over an Arken as of right now
