@@roysonne well, Ive always had trouble with bow strokes. Intonation is my forte but the bow... My misery! Id love it if you posted a video like the basics of bow stroking, how to provide the violin sound with that extra feeling kick, apart from all the strokes like sautille, Ricochet, etc... @@aranl2740: What you are talking about, bow technique and tone quality, is a huge subject. In reality there is no single technique or trick that will give your sound that extra "kick." We violinists work all our lives to give each passage a wonderful sound. Within that context we work on different bow strokes, spiccato, martele, detache, etc. but then we need to apply our knowledge and technique to each individual passage or section of the music. It's truly a lifetime endeavor. Welcome to the club!! I would recommend that you check out violinlab.com which is run by my friend Beth Blackerby. It has over 600 videos covering every aspect of violin technique. It also has a discussion board so you can compare notes with other people who are tackling the same issues. Also check out Professor V on RU-vid. He has many excellent videos that I think would be of value to you. Wishing you much violinistic joy and fulfillment.

@@roysonne been checking your recommendations and they are really useful! I guess it was just wishful thinking me trying to find some sort of magic wand to make my bow sound more like a professional. I should practise and practise to find the most accurate tone for different pieces as well as my own tone, as you suggested above. Many thanks for your wise advice. Take your time with the harmonics. Once you can get one or two (with the first and fourth finger) you will have the knack of it.

Hi Jan. If you're getting the notes right then it doesn't matter if your fingerings aren't the same as mine. You might try downloading the video and slowing it down with Premiere Elements or some other software to see the fingerings in more detail. Best wishes.

I don't have one for Czardas because I usually don't start with a predetermined set of fingerings in my teaching because I work out the fingerings together with each student according to what works best for him/her.

My first advice to you would be to try to find a way to take some lessons. If it is not possible to have regular lessons, then even a session every month or two would be valuable. Also, there are now a lot of good resources online. Check out Violinlab.com which has hundreds of instructional videos, mostly from a technical standpoint and many for people at a less advanced technical level. Hello Evanio. The index finger should be solidly on the string but not so strongly that it makes your hand tense or interferes with your shifting. Best wishes for your violinistic progress.

Hello Maxine. Basically you keep your fingers close to the string. There may be some fingers that you hold down depending on the context. For instance in the first 16th note pasage DEFE DEFE DEFE you will probably keep the first finger down. You have to experiment. Meanwhile the bowing is all separate --detache- letting the bow spring a little.

Hi Siamak, I think 144 is a very convincing tempo although a lot of people play it faster than that. Really there is no right tempo. Especially in this music. Whatever tempo you can play it at reliably, and feels right to you, is in fact right.

pianodudeler From a strictly musical standpoint it can sound fine that way. In fact it might sound outstandingly good. However violinistically speaking, it would be copping out.

Thank you Roy for the wonderfully helpful video, I am not playing at this level yet but it is a piece to aspire to. I found that your demonstration of vibrato for the artificial harmonics helped me develop a better vibrato movement. So I'll definitely keep working on the artificial harmonics. I wonder if you would consider making a lesson on the Dancla Op. 89 no 5 It has a variety of techniques. I find the ricochets in var.2 awkwardly insecure.

Hi s m: The first note is a D, the same as if she was using the harmonics. In that extreme high register the whole concept of positions breaks down. You just have to go from note to note using whatever fingering is most convenient and gauging the distance between the notes.
