Today we revisit two very unique and often unknown carbines from 1950s communist Czechoslovakia: the Samonabíjecí puška vzor 52 in 7.62x45mm, and the Samonabíjecí puška vzor 52/57 in 7.62x39mm.
The original carbine was designed by Jan and Jaroslav Kratochvíl, who worked at Ceská zbrojovka. Prototypes were shown off as early as 1949, with full adoption by 1952. Vz.52 production occurred at three factories from 1952 until 1957. Ceská zbrojovka manufactured the majority, using the code 'SHE'. Považská strojárne using 'AYM' and Strakonice using 'RID' both each built the rifle in smaller numbers.
The Vz.52/57 replaced the original and was built at Ceská zbrojovka between 1957 and 1959.

SO much props to Misha for producing such great gun content and also being blind to boot! This is literally one of my favorite channels on RU-vid! Just shows what someone can do and learn if they put their minds to it! Thanks Mishaco!

Another great vid- thanks. I've always wanted a VZ52 rifle. BTW I'd like to see more of your vids on semi converted for the US market guns. Guns like the Wiselite or BRP M53 beltfed (Yugo MG42 clone) in semi for example. There is a whole group of interesting gun types that are/have been available to US gun buyers that no RU-vid channel seems to cover. It'd be interesting to see mods made to make former MG's legal in the US by some makers from SMG, TNW, WLA, BRP and many others etc.

Well just put up a video on a KP44 converted by SMG. Did one on the TNW Suomi a bit back as well. Which ones were ou thinking about?
@Choo-ew9so

I was thinking about the WLA M53 or even the DP-28 (can't recall the 'maker' or converter I should say), former MG's that were converted to SA for the US market...belt feds and the like. I also enjoyed your KP44 vid. I have a TNW KP44 along with an M31 Suomi. @@misha5670

I purchased one of the VZ.52, in 7.62x45 from a company I usually deal with and have purchased military weapons before. I added an extra $25.00 for the best selection out of ten. When I received it, I looked down the barrel with a bore light and it was difficult to see any light at all due the rust in the barrel. I cleaned out the rust and the barrel was shot out. I was disgusted! I have other military surplus rifles and the barrels have a decent amount of rifling. I sent this back. If this was the best of ten, the rest must be total junk. I really wanted one of these but I'm not paying $500.00 for junk.

Even the 52's are pretty pricey these days. Self loading older surplus in general has all gone up a good bit in a short time, hell Classic sold a boatload of beat up Chinese SKS rifles for like 400 a pop recently (worth it for a decent one if you ask me, but Classic is a crapshoot and suck at being honest with condition description. I love mine but it's in decent shape, a "Ghost" from SOG a few years back) Empire sold a Yugo 59/66 SKS for 750 today, although it was in near unissued shape. I have one, unissued with original arsenal logbook that I got for 450 from SOG just 3 or 4 years ago and another pristine but used I got from Wideners for 300 back in the day... Look what Hakims are bringing in these days... Of course all surplus goes up in value, I just noticed self loading in general seems to have risen quicker than most others except maybe Swiss rifles.

In case any of you guys are looking for ammo, Steinel has said they're thinking about making 7.62x45 on their Facebook page. I already had about 50 guys message them requesting them to make it. If you want it. Go to their facebook page and shoot them a message please. I want new production, non-corrosive ammo so I can enjoy shooting mine.

I'm Czech. I was like "Hey, how much can a Vz.52/57 cost? It's an old and obsolete gun and I live in the country of origin. It sure can't be that difficult to get one." Well, turns out I was wrong. It costs twice as much as a Vz.58 and it's out of stock literally everywhere. It's easier to buy an SKS (which our army never used) than this domestic rifle.

I picked one up at a gun show in 2016 it’s in good shape but it’s in 7.62x45. It came with a conversion kit but after messing with the conversion kit I was like this doesn’t seem safe. I basically have a useless rifle, maybe someday some one will make 7.62x45.

If you think Century butchered the guns, you haven't seen what Germans have done with "sporterizing" these like weld a blob on the bolt carrier and cut a corresponding channel in the bolt to make them incompatible with the military originals...

Im kinda sad that my 52 causes original brass to rip along the neck length wise in 35% of my cases.
@misha5670
@misha5670 5 лет назад
Honestly? I'd suspect the brass has more to do with that than the rifle itself. I've noticed that the surplus 7,62x45 isn't of the highest quality. I've been told by someone at Century that it was stored in rather poor conditions, so deteriated somewhate over the years.

@@misha5670 Nah im in europe. Looks like original laboration too. Guess the chemistry went off maybe. Ill bring them to the lab when im back to work. Maybe well see a dispersion in velocity/pressure.

Czech weapons are great but it must be said or replied what Karl Kasarda said: "1952 was a bad year for Czech weapons designing; Vz-52 pistol isn`t very good and Vz-52 rifle isn`t better than SKS" and I raise by adding Vz-52 light machine-gun which isn`t better or as good as the Soviet RPD.
@misha5670
@misha5670 5 лет назад
I don't think the goal was to design 'better' firearms to the Soviets, but just to have different firearms to the Soviets. It was a political statement. Plus really both the Vz52 pistol and rifle both pre-dated the complete communist takeover/control, as did the SA23/25 SMG (aka VZ24/VZ26). One thing though, i think there is a good case ofr the later Vz58 being better than the AK T3 or even AKM. Not saying it 100% was, just that it had some benefits over the Soviet rifles.
@teppokuusisto144
@teppokuusisto144 5 лет назад
52 was a bad year. Before and after things were or got better. Good examples those SA23 SMG`s and Vz-58 rifles. CZ-75 4Ever! ;)

Karl was among those who experienced "firing pin issues".
@misha5670
@misha5670 5 лет назад
Then we have something in common. I had one break on me several years back in a Vz.52. Shame too as the rifle itself was in beautiful condition and had been taken care of. I've only had a handful of FPs break on me in my life, so this one was memorable.
@teppokuusisto144
@teppokuusisto144 5 лет назад
The surest way to break Vz-52 pistol is to dry-fire it. Enough said about that "military" weapon (and yes, I know the legend about Carlos the Jackal..).

Great video but after seeing how the 52/57 failed for the guys at InRange I wouldn't make it a habit of running it hard.
@misha5670
@misha5670 5 лет назад
Keep in mind any test like that is a sample set of 1 and in the case of something like a vz.52/57, a 60 year old rifle with an unknown military history. You just can't know how it ws treated all those years. Plenty of modern guns can and do break firing pins also.
@kevinstafford4475
@kevinstafford4475 5 лет назад
Agreed, I have replaced parts on my modern AR's and derivatives for failure (mainly extractors), but the firing pin design on the 52/57 is very weak in my opinion. Yes it is a 60 year old rifle but even with moderate usage the firing pin really should be the last item to break. Just my observation.
