Op. 364, Op. 348, the Sonata No. 10, Op. 692, Op. 754, and Op. 756 are Czerny studies which are almost never played yet considerably more musical than Op. 299, Op. 740, Op. 636, etc.

You have put Czerny in perspective. This has been invaluable to me as you explained how Czernys books progress. It has given me an understanding how Czerny has designed his books so l have an understanding of Czernys method so l can work at my level and at my own pace. Thank you for your invaluable help explaining the order of these books. Very much appreciated.

Love this video! I really like op 777 for early intermediate level, and it only has 24 exercises so it's not overwhelming. Because you didn't already have enough Czerny opus numbers. :)

Cool you mention 777. I also have the 777book and can play all 24. It was my introduction to Czerny. I continued now with the Germer book. You can play 777? And if so with which other opus you continued? PS: Opus777 is not well known I think. greets :-)

Really a great video, i'm a motivated 31yo adult beginner since 1 year, so around grade 3 , starting my way to grade 4, and i was frustrated to always being 10-15 bpm below the true tempo of pieces, my fingers were just not enough trained or fast, and i know i need some true practice, like a sportsman. I was lost between Hanon, Czerny,etc. but thanks to you i have a great view of the path i must take, i'll build a good basis for fingers strength with Hanon then i'll swap to Czerny to velocity, dexterity because it looks far more enjoyable.

IMO, a pianist could play the complete op. 740 during the course of, say, 10 years. The same thing holds true for Bach's WTC. A pianist would profit a lot from playing the 48 in 20 years' time. Never hurrying helps a lot.

I take Czerny “session” from time to time but generally think it’s best to have a varied styles of music from different periods to keep musicality and technique in shape.

I think that czerny is a great part of the piano repetoire. I've done all of them, and in fact they have some things that i've become better , when i went to another type of piano pieces, A must have to increase some techniques...among chopin etudes of course.

The original German title of the school of velocity is ‘Die Schule der Geläufigkeit’, where ‘Geläufigkeit’ stands for fluency and dexterity, but definitely not for speed. According to the title, you should achieve ease and elegance here, not necessarily velocity, you don't have to hurt your fingers to achieve incredible speed, no one cares!

I have all these books plus a few more. IMSLP is a great place to find all these plus some. Also cheack out op. 500 The School of Pianoforte Playing. Its in 4 volumes. Its kind a "method" book of the time era. Neat for teachers for historical study.

Thank you for this great and informative overview. I used to play 8 bar etudes a couple of years ago, and now I want to turn back to the keys after a break of several years. As my skills deteriorated, I am looking for something easier and new, so I probably grab 849. I don't actually play them to improve my virtuosity but rather to warm up, train basics and find and fix skills where I am not good enough at as I should be on my level (I really struggle with fast octaves for example, which is why Chopin op. 25 10. is one of the few Chopin etudes that I did never play in the past) What kind of grading system is that? Is there an overview with example pieces for "advanced" grades? I think advanced can be anything between Chopin's Waltzes and Ballades and Scherzi, where the latter I consider much harder but still not yet professional (with the 4th as an exception) I once saw a scale on a German page which 1-8 and then 8+ and 8++ but it was somehow ridiculous because a well-above average hobby player can be far beyond 8++ easily (don't remember the name and where I found it though)
@pianotips2623
@pianotips2623 2 дня назад
This channel is for beginner/intermediate pianists, therefore I don't really discuss professional/very advanced material. I believe if you're very advanced, you won't be looking for youtube videos...you either have a great teacher or enough knowledge to learn alone. The only Czerny which is very advanced is op.740 from the ones I mentioned in the video

I'd say the Op. 245 study in double notes takes the cake for most technically demanding Czerny piece. It borders on unplayable in certain sections.

@@marcorval thanks, I’ll check them out. Btw I simply stated that 365 is harder than 740. I didn’t mean to imply that 365 is the hardest, sorry for the misunderstanding.
@marcorval
@marcorval 11 месяцев назад
@@pianisthenics true, but op. 365 is one of the hardest too. But it's not very interesting musically imo. I would prefer Op. 364, Op. 348, or the Sonata No. 10 (which Czerny called the "Étude Sonata") which are all very difficult. Op. 692 and Op. 756 are somewhat easier but also interesting from a musical standpoint. Sorry for the long rambling...it's just that I think some people should stop overplaying Op. 299, Op. 740, Op. 821, etc. because Czerny wrote far more interesting stuff, even in the realm of études.
@unipsychle
@unipsychle 3 дня назад
I don't hate your video but I rather do hate the fact that you never play any of the exercises that you talk about and you keep referring to School grades which is very confusing as most people don't learn piano in first grade or in school at all. It just really makes it sound like you are talking about something you don't have direct experience in. That may not be the case. The whole thing sounds like you're recalling an article written about czerny from memory
@pianotips2623
@pianotips2623 2 дня назад
Czerny wrote thousands of exercises. Do you want to play them all to give a good representation of what I am talking about? The video is long enough as it is. Also, many of the books are progressive, meaning that the beginning is much easier than the end so playing one piece would say nothing about the overall difficulty. I published several Czerny tutorial videos, where I play and teach the exercises in great detail.

Be careful with Czerny’s methods (or anyone else’s from that period) because they were written with a different instrument in mind. The pianoforte action has a completely different feel and it doesn’t quite line up with modern piano technique. Studying these can still be very valuable, but take their recommendations with a grain of salt.
