Dál Riata was a Gaelic kingdom that comprised County Antrim in modern north-east Ireland and the western seaborne of modern Scotland. This Gaelic Kingdom included various inner Hebridean islands, and the western section of Scotland known as Argyll, or coast of the Gaels. The capital of Dál Riata was most probably Dunadd in Argyll and Bute, with wine containers from Gaul amongst the relics found in Dunadd. The Kingdom reached its height of power during the 6th and 7th centuries AD, and the inhabitants of Dál Riata were often referred to by Latin sources as Scoti, and later as Gaels.
An early version of Gaelic appears to have been the primary language of Dál Riata, but other languages seem to have been spoken in parts of the island kingdom. Columba famously had to use a translator when speaking to someone from Skye, and there is evidence from placenames that P-Celtic languages were spoken in certain places. Celtic languages are divided by some scholars into two categories: P-Celtic languages such as Gaulish and Brittonic; and Q-Celtic languages, which include the Goidelic or Gaelic languages of Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Manx today.
Given the geography of Dál Riata, it will come as no surprise that the kingdom had a strong naval presence. Currachs, a type of Irish boat, were probably popular methods of transport, with some sources suggesting that the Gaels may have built their own version of Viking long boats for certain purposes. Dál Riata also had a strong naval war fleet that was organised between the houses who each had to provide oarsmen.
In relation to the origins of the Gaels in Scotland, one argument is that they came from Ireland and conquered the western region of Argyll in Scotland around 500 AD. The story goes that the conquest was led by the three sons of the King of the Irish Dál Riata, Erc, with his sons being Fergus Mor, Loarn and Óengus. This narrative is challenged by others, who argue that the Gaels were in Scotland centuries before this.
Bede, a monk born in the Kingdom of Northumbria wrote in his book completed in 731 AD, called the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, that.
“In course of time Britain received a third tribe in addition to the Britons and the Picts, namely the Irish. These came from Ireland under their leader Reuda, and won lands among the Picts either by friendly treaty or the sword. These they still possess. They are still called Dalreudini after this leader, Dal in their language signifying a part” (Bede 1994: 11).
The origins of Dál Riata are not quite clear, but there does seem to have been two Dál Riata’s in a sense however, at least for periods of time, a Scottish and an Irish one. In relation to the organisation of Scottish Dál Riata, it was comprised of 4 main kindreds with their own leaders claiming descent from previous kings. The four kindreds were...

And the Scoti Royals and Nobles writing the Pope were talking about themselves. Its well known Scotland is named after Scotia and Egyptian Princess who Married a Scythian Prince and they became the King and Queen of a Group of People who Invaded Northern Ireland, and gathered their Strength and than Parts of Scotland. There was initial migration from Scotland to Ireland of Neolithic Farmers as early as 17,000 BCE. They've been going back and forth since. So yes there was already a Gaelic presence in Western Scotland from very early times that gradually built into a migration. This was not a military conquering but rather a product of the invitation of the Royal Sept of Erinvines (Ancient Irish Royal lineage of Brogan through Mil and his wife Scotti and his sons) that were ousted by the Ui Niall due to their intermarriage with Pictish Royalty and their desire for the entire northern Ulaid. You'll notice that Alt Clut/Syrathclyde was considered seperate yet always friendly. Kenneth MacAlpin was the head of the Sept of Erinvines...in Strathclyde...that eventually was able to claim Pictland due to his royal Pictish heritage. His grandson used all the connections to form Scotland. The Erinvines...the Royal Sept of Gael and Pict...Families DUNCAN and ALPIN (Gael Royal Septs formed a tainist relationship of two interrelated families) were the backbone of the founding of Scotland. The Duncans eventually took over from the Alpin dynasty in the HOUSE OF DUNKELD...the longest serving Celtic Royal House. ....and my ancestors.

In 1863, in New Zealand, a women from Skye and a man from an island off the Northern Irish coast married. No one would give them a church to marry in, as tensions were very high -though eventually they did, in Maori Hill in Dunedin (NZ). It was the genesis of the line of Callahan. I wonder how they paired , . and I wonder if a dialect, passed along in that territory since the days of Dal Riata, was they glue they shared. Do you have any idea ?

I have always said that northern Ireland, ulster was connected to the Scottish islands as far back as a thousand years and not to James the first as most think. People see history as it is today by looking backwards. Ulster has been seperate from the rest of Ireland so as to form two parts. Unification therefore is not restoration. It's always worked both ways when the Irish held land in north Wales and Cumbria in England.admittedly there have been other confusing factors but to all intent Ulster has always been a province in its own right.

The Scoti/Gaels were back stabiing chancers who stole the lands of the Picts after the Picts lost their king and their nobles while fighting the Viking Danes. The Scoti had already lost their kingdom of Dalriada to the Viking Norwegians, but due to aristrocratic inter marriage between the Scoti and Picts they were able to claim Pictavia. Due to the Picts' struggles against the Danes they had no choice but to gracefully accept Scoti/Gaelic domination. The Picts who resisted this were ruthlessly slaughted by the Scoti/Gaels. BTW the Gaelic language was an imposition. First it came from the Irish missionairies who converted the pagan Picts and then by the Scoti who stole their kingdom.

You have some of the history but not all. Read Lebor Gabala Erenn. The book of the takings of Ireland. The Scotti who you say never existed are the Milesians who came to Ireland from Spain. They were Scythian royalty. They had Tara, which is in Republic as there Royal Palace. Ireland was originally known as Scotti Major and Scotland Scotti Minor. The stone of destiny was in Tara for the crowning of Irish High Kings. It was given as a loan to the the great uncle of Irish High king. Fergus the Great to be crowned king of Dal Riada in Scotland. It was called in Gaelic the Lia Fail, the stone of destiny. Google it.
