Dennis, you are amazing! Your videos are so educational for old school fisherman's like myself. I believe in vintage fishing equipment. Thank God there's you to educate old souls fisherman's. I want you to service my reels. Dean Abiva form honolulu, hawaii

Watching this again because I got another one of these. I remember you got a black Centaure reel that you never did a video on. It had the port on the side. Wish you had don that one. I’ve seen a green Centaure Pacifica before. This 550 is a very fine reel. With my first 550 all I had to do was take out the handle side screws and expose the other side to do a little lubricating. The reel was in excellent shape inside. With the one I have now I need to totally disassemble it. I have a great 270 Super I use often in surf fishing. I totally dismantled, cleaned and lubricated and reassembled my Sagarra Super today. It did not have the bearings I thought it had but it is still incredibly smooth and strong. It had a very interesting oscillation block on the axle shaft that was different from any I had seen. These DAM Quick reels have incredible gears and are unbelievably strong and sturdy. They are also quite heavy. I’m going to remove the pinion, main gear, and te bearing on mine . I do believe this reel has a bearing at the pinion just like the 270 Super. This is a great instructional video. This one and the one you did on the 270 Super are invaluable helps. I’n not sure I could have done it w/o them!. I often soak bearings in PB Blaster overnight to clean them. it really works well. I have a tool that holds bearings while cleaning them. It is graduated to work with many sizes. I had to file the points on my tool for those locking rings. This entire box had all great reels. I have two Mitchell 406 reels with that treacherous bearing and pinion. Super job Dennis!

Thanks Chris. The D.A.M. reels rank among my favorites of any era. So well made. Incredible engineering and design. Glad to hear you are happy with the Spanish reel. I will have to check on the Cenature

@@2ndChanceTackle I have 4cDAM Quick reels now. I sort of looking for a 440. I don’t want the N models because they sacrifice some of the over engineering of the earlier reels. Right now I have two 550s, a 331, and a 270 Super. If I got the chance I’d get another Super but for my collection I need a 440. You can’t beat the quality of these reels. Nothing else is even close. Have you ever seen a two speed Super? I almost got one a few months ago. They are not at all practical for fishing but are remarkable.

I’ve watched this video a number of times and for me and my 550 I felt it necessary to remove the bearing and pinion. It is the only way to adequately clean that pinion/worm gear. I submerged the entire main gear mechanism in PB Blaster while still attached to the handle. I included the bearing and pinion/worm gear in thatPB Blaster bant. I was able to completely clean all of that w/o removing those pins. I soaked it for three days and then blew it out with my air compressor. It’s just the way I decided to do it. My 660 operates flawlessly after proper lubrication and reassembly I have that clip ring tool but I need a smaller one for other reels I often work on,. As I’ve said before this is an excellent reference video for servicing a 550!

I bought a DAM 331N recently. A wonderful reel, but it needed maintenance. It has a different anti reverse mechanism, but everything else is basically the same as with this 550. I’ve never opened a reel before, but thanks to you I was able to open, clean and grease the reel. Now it works almost as new. Without this video of yours it would have been much more difficult. Thank you, Dennis!

Your reel's little brother, the 220 is the first quality spinner l ever owned. Had it exactly 50 years, was a gift for my 16th birthday. Someone on one of the reel repair sites said the D.A.M. Quicks from the 1950s and1960s were "Loud and proud like a Panzer tank." Don't think the bearing is making the noise. l own over 30 in assorted sizes and some can benefit from an extra washer behind the crosswind arm inserted over the stud on the main gear. The later D.A.M. Quick 550N is the same size, but a completely different design. Those are some quality snap ring pliers you were using. l have a cheap set that irritate me sometimes. The metal spool from the Super 270 will interchange with the 550.

I have a Dam Quick “Super” two speed. They are the only reel I know of that are heavier than a Penn, both in physical weight and In engineering. Great video Mr. Dennis I just realized how old this video is. I noticed the enchilada wood was dark & dove tailed.

Yes - these were built to last and certainly weigh a lot. Imagine casting that repeatedly for 6 or 7 hours! This is an earlier video and the wood is an oak drawer side that was with me for many years and years. Unfortunately, it finally cracked! It now has a place on my tool wall of fame where my retired tools go to rest - Thanks Steve

@@2ndChanceTackle I have finally adopted a Formica top for a workbench. It rests on filing cabinets with large and small drawers that allow me to store the variety of tools needed for 2nd Chancing Tackle. I was paralyzed 2&1/2 years ago and had nothing to do or talk about except for my health. So I began “2nd Chancing my own tackle. After 24 years as an offshore charter captain I had a bunch. All my benches would not allow access by wheelchair ♿️. I now , like Scott, search my old contacts, flea markets, eBay or Facebook marketplace. I stumbled upon 2nd Chance Tackle by “chance” because I couldn’t get a bridge assembly installed on a Penn Longbeach 60. Dennis, you in many ways have made my business much more successful. I’m actually beginning to get my ability to walk back. It’s been a tough couple of years but God has seen fit to let me walk again. I did 50’ with a walker yesterday. Dennis you don’t realize the impact that your videos have had in my life sir. Thank you for always being mindful of our first responders and essential personnel. I have been binging on these older ones. My Damm Quick is a two speed, I’m not aware that anyone else makes one. I only have Penn reels, I’m kind of a snob about them. Thank you Dennis

Great video. Helpful hint : I don't know if you know this or not. But my dad taught me a way to pack bearings. You put a glob of grease in your palm and then you press the bearing into the grease reapeatly. Rotating the bearing little by little it'll push the old dirty grease out. Hope that helps.

If you take the 3 screws out of the DAM 550 the handle assembly comes out in on piece. It is not necessary to remove the handle.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 3 года назад
Right, but you cannot remove the main gear and service the back end shaft and bushing without removing the handle. You can just pull the screws for a general cleaning and lube - Dennis

@2ndChanceTackle

Your main shaft may be bent and binding inside the worm gear. That is a problem. If you don't have the spool on the axle, put it on and use it as a knob to help you pull it out - Dennis

Hi Dennis I have two DAM 220, both are turning fine except for the line rollers on the bail wire. I removed them from the wire, cleaned and oiled them but still they were not rolling. Thinking the bail wire is in tension, I tried bending it with my hands, but was no use either. The wire hardly could change shape and didn't want to use to much force and damage them. Is there a solution to get the rollers moving? Thanks.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 4 года назад
The only thought I have is to use steel wool or light emery cloth to buff the bail wire. I assume you can move the roller by hand, but that it is tight and binding. It may be some corrosion on the wire. The steel wool buffing would remove that as a cause - Dennis

I was just spinning this reel after reading your comment. The reel seems normal to me. It could be the mic on my camera. These all have the "heavy" sound, and are not as smooth as today's versions due to metal on metal bushings vs ball bearings. I am going to replay the video later to see if I can hear what you hear - Thanks - Dennis

Awesome video. I have a penn 650 with a sticky bail. Any suggestions? Thanks for sharing.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 лет назад
If the spring is working, the most likely cause of the sticky bail is dirt and built up dried grease on the parts. Remove the spool and use a heavy spray of a penetrating oil like WD40 inside rotor cup and at both connecting points of the bail. Let it sit a few minutes and then manually work the bail back a forth a dozen or so times to work it into the parts. Did that fix it? If not, then the next probable cause is a bent bail wire. Remove the non-spring side of the bail. It is the side opposite the line guide. Take the wire off the post. If it springs out, or does not hang near the post, but has a 1/4 inch or more separation from where it is attached, then you need to bend the arc of the bail wire back to where it rests easily on the post, or you need to replace the bail wire. Those are the two most common issues. Let me now if they help restore the function - Thanks for asking - Dennis
