I would pay so much money for a whole cd of D'angelo doing acoustic covers of all his songs without the crowds screams getting in the way. But apart from girl tugging on his shirt,that is a beautiful thing him getting somuch lov and feeding off it..but man i would give so much to hear acoustic version of his songs, i love the roecording, so intimate you can even hear his breathing
my favorite concert of prince's was his last one. Just him. Just the piano. And he still had enough swag to sound like 4 people were playing at all times.
This has all the qualities that Prince's "Piano & A Microphone" has: Just the absolute basics of a brilliant song performed by a world-class artist. If your song works with a piano and a microphone then it will stand the test of time.
Well, the horn arrangements (Roy Hargrove) and guitar+bass of Charlie Hunter give it a bit of a different vibe. But either way, D'Angelo's talent runs deep.
@@tuckeverlasting5469 he's not talking about instrumentation, but about composition, arrangement and performance. He brought a fully realized song into the studio where a lot of artists bring little more than a vague idea. For example check out Nile Rodgers' story about Bowie's Let's Dance. Even that is a lot more than a lot of artists bring to the table. It is really rare for someone to bring such a polished demo to the table. Usually it requires some pretty substantial reworking based on 3rd party feedback or even direct participation. a pretty reasonable expectation for a demo is for others to react with "ok, i think i see where you are trying to go with this, let's see what we can do to get it there." in this demo, D'Angelo just "went there" Instrumentation was added. That's it. not much in the way of performance notes, or need to rework song structure or lyrics, melodic or harmonic progressions or the feel.
And he didn't take piano lessons or nothing. At 4 years old he started banging on the piano that was at his house. He said that soon he began to make sense of the banging.
It’s crazy how low key he is and I say that with the utmost respect! He’s one of the greats and it seems like he’s still kind of got that mystique about him and not so mainstream and celebrity.

What I appreciate about D'Angelo is it seems he puts his heart and soul into music. Artist today treat music like snack food and think it's cute that they don't write and release two albums a year. No wonder music is mediocre today. No substance or thought put into it. D'Angelo on the other hand makes us wait over 10 years for his 3rd album and I have no doubt it'll be worth the wait.
D is a god, but that's got absolutely nothing to do with music 'today' vs. music of the past.. There is plenty of amazing music being created every day, if you look hard enough. It's easy to look back and think the past was so much better but it's an illusion.
I love this song, and cant believe Ive just discovered this version! Its so good. Anyway Im looking out for another version, aparently titled Simply Da Joint. Its 9 minutes long and has more percussion and flute on it. Anyone else heard it?
one o the fucking greates tunes ever written, even recorded the way It was should be on the album...wersion realeased later was accurate and fine but it didnt have the same spirit
I saw him at Brixton Academy on the Voodoo tour, and Hammersmith Apollo for the Black Messiah. The Voodoo gig was the best show I have experienced in my life, and I've seen a lot of gigs!
Sarah Fluturas that's sweet Sarah.. but reading the chords and melody from a sheet of paper is dramatically less satisfying than the feeling you feel when you figure it out yourself. If he took the time to figure out all the songs on that album, he would find that he could play very many songs just by listening. It's just a matter of developing your ear.. and the freedom that comes after that is truly beautiful. #justsaying.
+sensi sensi Music is Aural and physical.. it has nothing whatsoever to do with anything written on paper. It is all about sound and rhythm.. and neither sound nor rhythm can be accurately reflected on paper. Sheet music is useful.. and necessary in settings where you need to coordinating the playing of a bunch of musicians. Its not supposed to be a substitute for actual musical skill. Taking the time to decipher the songs you love by ear will make you a better musician.. and it will make you a more patient musician. And that makes it worth all of the time and effort... in my opinion. I've met a few musicians that play by sight and sight alone.. meaning.. if you take away that sheet.. they don't know what to do.. and that is one of the saddest things in the world to me. They have no insight into the songs they play, they're just performing the song like a computer. If they learned the song by ear.. note by note.. chord by chord.. then they would really KNOW the song when they finished.

If I feel like writing a book in response to a simple question, then that's what I should do.. and if someone someday sees it and reads and gains even just a tiny bit of insight that helps them forward in some way.. then that is enough for me. If that's rubs some people, like yourself, the wrong way, again.. so be it. Recognize that this Internet thing represents a real opportunity for people to connect with people and to share and progress.. that's how I see it.. and thats how I approach it. Whether or not that comes across as "fun" does not enter into it because I'm at the point in my life where being seen as "fun" is not important to me. If my sharing sounds "condescending" it's because it is.. it emanates from me and my life.. which I am the ultimate authority and expert. Ask yourself, how did you get to the point where you would see someone sharing their perspective as some sort of challenge to your own? We all see from where we stand.. it makes no sense to argue about whose depiction of the view is correct. They are all correct. You don't think many folks can learn this by ear, I think anyone can learn to play anything by ear and the only way to know if you can do it is to try to do it.
