When companies don't want to post manuals or "support" for "legacy" equipment, I tell them I would never buy anything from them. These are old-school quality machines that with a little TLC should last a lifetime. That sends out a message loud and clear that what they are making now is not meant to last and their intention is for "planned obsolescence". Anyway, glad you got it and looks like it will make a great addition to your shop.
@DavidLindes
@DavidLindes 4 года назад
Indeed... I wish more companies would plan for a loyal following of occasional buyers and frequent recommenders, rather than frequent buying from duped buyers who will just end up disappointed. :-/ And that they would aim for longevity, instead of growth.

A simple wooden wedge makes a good spindle lock, but when removing that kind of nut it's easiest to put the pin spanner in the holes, hold the wheel, then just tap the spanner handle sharply anticlockwise with a hammer. I'm really enjoying your videos.

Great: at least a vintage machine in Quinn's home machine shop. I wish you as pleasure as I had to restaure my lathe (1940's) and my mill (1960's). My latest acquisition is a bench grinder (stamped 1982). After such restaurations I understood what quality is. Congrats.

If you want a small shop tip, here's something I learned from my dad: just tie the specialty tool (be it a chuck key for an old power drill, or a spanner wrench for an angle grinder) to the power cord with some wire. That way, you'll always know where your specialty tool is. Also, I just noticed that that grinder was made like two towns from where I live, in Bad Lauterberg in Germany, hile I live near Osterode.

Make yourself some various size tools for cut off and grooving from 3/8 square tool bits. Grind from the right side to make a thin blade, not too long, keep the left side close to the 3/8 left side. With these tools you can work close to the chuck or collet. Grind up both ends of the tool bit for best economy. 10 or 20 uniquw shapes for your type work will allow you to make anything. Rex 76, Rex 49, Momax and Tungalloy are good brands! Do not rely on factory made standard tooling for the best work. JIM

We have a cool old timer trick on removing stubburn grinder nuts (which look identical to this grinder nut) here in the slavic areas. You apply some wd40 on the thread and light it up. Than you take a spotter (the spikey tool that you hammer on to spot drill bit holes and yes I have no idea if I spelled it correctly) and you lean it on one the holes and quicky whack the spotter with a hammer to loosen it up. Works really well.

To make cutting off easier, with less deflection, you might try grinding an angle of about 10 to 2o degrees to the axis of the part on your tool. I don't see this used often on lathes, but it is routine on screw machines (fancy lathes).

I've experienced boxes that were designed to be removed that way... they had plastic handle inserts that held the removable top 5 sides of the box from small flaps on the bottom of the box. Pull a little tab on the handle, then pull the handle out, then lift 5/6 of the box off the rest, and there's your equipment, that you can then lift out of the little bit of box bottom that's left. Lame that you didn't have those, and had to cut them!

Stupid machining question: at 10:45 you put the square brass handle on two thin parallels. Is there a "thick" parallel that could be used instead? I myself would be worried that the parallel wouldn't support the part. [seriously I'm a total neophyte]

Great question! Parallels do come in many thicknesses. I used thin parallels there so that the drill wouldn’t hit them as it went through.

If you threw up some shower curtains between the grinder and the lathe would that be enough protection? Asking as someone who grinds in the vicinity of their lathe.. oops
@Blondihacks

I’m not sure, honestly. I know people do do that, and Stefan is a good example of someone who grinds in a small shop near machine tools. So perhaps with adequate dust control it’s okay?

Having dealt with German industrial companies and old obsolete equipment, the "no support, please buy new and go away" mentality is common. In my case, it was an 1992 (as old as me!) Inresa S-300 Inductive casting machine I was redoing the control circuitry for as a senior capstone project for my EET studies. Luckily the owner was able to obtain schematics (ja, auf Deutch!) and pictures a few years prior so I wasn't completely flying blind. The machine was missing the control cards, so I had literally nothing to go off of. Not to mention that "no machines are exactly alike"... Not an easy project. Harder than what I do as an actual engineer now. Good riddance. That said, it was ridiculously overbuilt... good old German quality.

Robin Renzetti made a really cool video on modding his Deckel clone D-bit grinder, especially at 8:40 where he talks about a dedicated tool he made for easily removing the wheels in their arbor. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ELTL9qTJg-o.html
