Part 1:
* Disclaimer* This is a Glimpse into the world of colt starting. If you were to watch this glimpse and then think that this is what you should do every-time, this will not work for you. What was done in this video matched what was going on at the moment and is certainly not an “every time” situation.
-
My role in this video is to orchestrate the direction of the colt, the attitude of the colt, and to provide security in so doing. I am also there to instruct the rider of that direction, when and how to use his legs.
In this video with me as the ground handler I am simply serving as a tool just like the pen itself is a tool, the bridle is a tool, the saddle is a tool, and the rider is a tool. All of these tools are there with the sole purpose to build confidence in the colt so that the colt is better off emotionally because of the experience and comes away with an understanding that will be a platform for him to build on for the rest of his life.

Dennis, did you have a mentor looking over you when you started getting interested in horses? If not, did you feel your prior experience with cattle translated enough to horses to help you avoid the problems that come from the unawareness this rider was talking about. In other words, how much of this skill and sensitivity come from just surviving making errors?

I was pretty much self taught early on and I do believe that my cattle experience did help quite a bit . However there were a lot of trial and error before I started to seek help . From people too numerous to mention . I’ve learned something from just about every body that I have been around and I continue to learn and hopefully improve even today

Thank you. Gives hope that it's not just some born horse-whisperer gift.

Never seen a Cruper like that. Curios why you like it ?

It has elastic in it so it can stretch but still has enough hold to keep the saddle off of the shoulders . Usually when a colt has accepted the feel of something under the tail they are more comfortable with everything. I don’t use one all the time but there are a lot of benefits to them that would warrenton the use of them . Like better minds and better stops

Ahh.thats what I thought. Elastic. I like you mention the tail I handle horses tails lots. It's a place often over looked. I watch the eyes,face muscles and tail. They are talking to you if you'll watch and listen. My favorite expression is " and all of a sudden" they......

please can you tell me why horses are started at 2?
@cappelhorsetrainingandshoeing
I have started them as late yearlings and every age up from there . The older they get the tougher the transition to agreement with a person is to achieve. Probably a little like getting married late in life for the first time . Lol Two seems to be the most pliable time mentally for the horses. This is also when they are getting strong enough physically to carry a rider . They are ready for heavy training yet of course but starting them at two is ideal for most horses and a if a good foundation is formed it can be built upon from there .

@@cappelhorsetrainingandshoeing WONDERFUL explanation. I am going to have to steal this! I've started many horses, and younger is always easier to work with due to the mind being more accepting of new information. The older (horses) tend to be more resistant and more liable to hurt themeless, and me, trying to fight.

Hi Laurie, it’s working fine on my side. Is it working for you now? It is sometime an issue with RU-vid I think. Coz I’ve had it once in the past also. Hope you got it to work 🙂
