Thank you x 10! First time Ive heard discussion on this topic of numbed out and confirming my experiences. I acquired an older gelding who had “seen the world” who routinely “checked out” with a blank stare even under seemingly normal routine horse handling and care. Others would comment that I should be happy that he “just stands there” and “takes” what given without fuss. Feeling this can’t be a good thing in any sense, I provided him choices and responsibilities. Boy did he have a lot to say! At first he was very bothered and resentful, almost demanding I just show him the mechanical sequence so to be done with it. Your clear mental picture process, encouragement to follow through the rough part to peacefulness and confidence in us older subscribers is truly appreciated. P.S. Eisenhower was President when I was born lol!

Makes such SENSE!!!! My filly had not been weaned properly (my fault), she is away now with my trainer. She with me was "checked out" and I was not looked at as the "leader". Better path now and I see her wires connecting and I'm getting leadership with her when I go to have sessions with our trainer. Thank you for this great discussion!

Dennis, I see so many people “checking out” these days, and even catch myself doing it in certain situations. I’m a new subscriber, and I find your videos fascinating, as I see mapping this knowledge onto many other situations from being with my dog and even observing in non-verbal situations. I love being in situations now where I can really tune in to my gut feelings and trust that guidance. One of the great things about getting older!😊

Distance is your friend! Yes, give him some space on the lead,holding up close he cannot walk along with that natural nod. They cannot shake a fly, they feel trapped, they eventually go nuts with frustration. Distance in a ride out too. So many horses are arena-bound, scared of the world outside, go to shows etc in a trailer. Well, I never had a truck or trailer, and I've ridden some distances unheard of these days. Made good confident horses out of them. I Iiked your bit of wisdom here. Shame the horses are for sport and recreation these days, old ways getting lost, jobs for horses mostly all gone. 76yo in Australia.

Thank you for your very informative videos. However I’m a bit disheartened currently. First time horse owner since two years. Never did anything with horses other than taking some riding lessons. Well I have become obsessed with learning , especially since my horse is not easy in the sense that he doesn’t respond to riding aides well. But I just didn’t understand him, even though I had him checked by vets and talked to all the knowledgeable’ people and read about it and watched videos etc. I tried to apply the methods I saw with minimal response. Well finally he showed that he was injured and that it was the end result of a chronic injury. So he was in pain most of that time; I didn’t know and I didn’t understand and I actually put him into work that probably made the injury worse. I always had a feeling something wasn’t quite right but lack of experience just lead to misreading the horse. So I feel like I let him down. We are rehabbing but he probably won’t be able to do much other than walk. I just feel like a lot of people just don’t know what the heck they are doing, no matter how much experience they have, save a select few like yourself. So we see the horses you speak of, they have just given up

Im kind of stuck in my own sequence.. I dont have a horse trailer, and the group i was in no longer exists. They helped me a lot with moving forward. Since i dont have a horse trailer my horse does not get out much, he is often bored - if i take him out to walk around, he freaks out and gets stressed. I dont know how to get him comfortable walking around outside of his pasture without getting him or myself hurt.
