I am starting my D&D campaign, and using your video has really improved my knowledge of this game. Although I am a young beginner, I am desperate to be in perfect condition for my next few tournaments.
@HowtoRPG Thanks! It's been 28 years since I last played in college. I'm having fun! I also watched your video about the hebalism kit for my Druid. Your excellent videos are greatly appreciated.
This is another great video! I have it homebrewed where players can also use their hit dice as extra damage (1 at a time) in combat, like a second-wind. However, they don't replenish until a long rest and at dawn. It's a fun risk and encourages them to drink those dumb healing potions :D
thanks for explaining that.. damn I couldn't understand why DnD didn't a spend a little more time explaining that in the Players Handbook! You did it in simple great video.. thanks mate!
Big help! Yesterday my bro had to roll his hit dice but he didn’t understand it (we’re first time players and the DM had already moved on). This video was a big help!
Formula: Single class: (Lvl x Hit Dice) + CON Modifier = Total Points Healed Multi-class: (Class1 Lvl x Hit Dice) + CON Modifier (Class2 Lvl x Hit Dice) + CON Modifier = Total Points Healed
So if your hit dice were d8s but when you originally rolled for your hp you didn’t get the highest numbers possible (say you’re level 3 with 15hp) and you rolled your three d8 to regain health, if you got a number higher than your hp maximum (24 for example) would you just fill up to your hp maximum ie 15? Or am I doing this completely wrong?
@lachlan @@HowtoRPG thats not what he did though- he did (hit dice +con mod) X lvl .... using your formula you only get the con mod once not on every roll- order of operations!
Thank you thank you THANK YOU!!! I have been trying to find the answer to how this works (mostly WHAT DICE are used but how many is also very important) and I couldn’t find any information that effectively explained it! thank you so much! I’m starting my very first campaign soon and this is a life saver (haha get it?) thank you so very much
for each roll of the hit dice during a short rest, how much time goes by? Is it 1 hour per roll or as many times as you want up to the character's level until the max hit points are achieved?
Shame no-one has answered your question, i was thinking exactly the same. Essentially, what happens when you have used up all your available hit dice (regardless of what level you are).
You get extra hit points back during a short rest if you have a level 2+ Bard around using their Song of Rest ability. Also note, you get all your hit points back after a long rest, and you get up to half of your unused hit dice back. So, you do have to "manage" your hit dice.
These are great and helpful vids, thanks. One thing I don't get about this rule is how is this supposed to work if you're trying to apply some basic reality to the game? Oh, gee that arrow that punched into your chest? No worries. Rest and hour, spend a 'magical' hit die and you're all better! What? I feel like this is too generous and makes the healer classes much less relevant. For the DM's out there, how do you justify this rule in game play?
This is how it should be taught so many tutorials don't demo the rolls and stick in the canon of the character sheets when new players are struggling with what 1d6+2 even means
When a hit die is spent (which is during a short rest) & one doesn’t do a long rest, does that mean they’ll be short the amount of hit die/dice they’ve spent during combat? For example: PC has leveled up to using 3d8 dice during combat. They do a short rest & spend 2d8... if they don’t do a long rest & enter combat again do they now roll 1d8 until they’ve taken a long rest before getting the 2d8 spent back?
Aslo one last question so letd say if my character level is level 4 then i will have four hit dice then if i level up do i roll the dice 4 times and add my constitution modifier..?
Roll a single hit dice and add your constitution modifier. You can then choose to roll another hit dice if you need to, once the first roll is determined and added to your hit point pool. Or you can just roll all your hit dice and add your constitution modifier to each dice roll.
This one is kinda fuzzy. When you say the 2nd Monk is 13th Level, and can "spend" his dice up to 13, is that thirteen for the day? For each rest? I read the rule, and I'm still not sure. Thanx in advance!
A 13th level monk can spend up to 13 hit dice in one day if they have them available. To get the hit dice back the monk must take a long rest and can only get half them back, which is 6. Hope that answers your question. If you are still confused, search for my "long rest" video.
so, the short rest its SO POWERFUL , you can take a short rest at lv 10 char and heal 10 dices , then gets to fight and when the fight over , take another short rest and heal another 10 dices ????? why you need a long rest?
