Apologies for the 30 seconds of black screen. One of the images didn't render. I didn't catch it until after uploading. The audio is still intact, so you don't miss any of my eloquent 🥴points 0:30 New Players Handbook 4:36 Greyhawk and the Multiverse 6:30 New Dungeon Masters Guide 8:26 New Monster Manual
You don't have to run it that way. But people certainly have run D&D that way even in previous editions. It's more of a marketing strategy to prevent competition between campaign settings. It doesn't really impact game mechanics at all.
@@direden it doesn't. But would require a DM to be familiar with all the settings to do so. Which is even harder if WotC isn't going to actually produce setting books.
Really interesting the way that backgrounds are made more important in this update. This is going to be the first time I’ll see a transition to a new generation of D&D as I’m new so I’m excited
Why my friend, I took would be sad if they did the new species line they did legacy races in Tasha’s but the new way there doing species still gives us specie specific traits, so we’re still getting functionally genetically different creatures
2:41 It is the “Soulknife” and not the “Psi-knife”. (Point that out for those that want to look it up now). Last point- DMG Chapter 2 is literally called “Creating the Multiverse”. That has always been in 5e, BUT they have until the last couple of years not released much about other campaign worlds largely (I believe) because of releasing less books, those releases would s lol better by rarity.
Well, that is the idea, but I'm not sold. Spelljammer. Dragonlance. Eberron. Ravenica. Theros. Planescape. All of these were dropped without much fanfare. One book. And one adventure, maybe. Both Eberron and Dragonlance were rich enough to sell an entire novel series back in the day. Compare that to WOTC favorite Ravenloft. Multiple books, adventures. Character options. Rarity was supposed to make these books more significant, but the lack of support has made them lackluster.
Has everyone forgotten that Greyhawk was the default campaign setting for the entirely of 3.0 and 3.5? They’re basically going back to that model but leaning into the multiverse.
I am really excited to see the updated monsters, they said they are making monsters have their statblock represent all parts of their art and concept, monsters like the Displacer Beast might have a pounce or an Owlbear might have flight/glide ability, the bandit might actually have an ability related to stealing. I am also interested to see how they change the DMG to make it more important to reference at the table aside from being just a list of magic items. They claimed that they are going for a show don't tell approach with the dmg with their examples, I imagine something like lil' exercises and templates to fill in to guide you through the creation of something instead of just random table dumps. Random tables are nice but without templates or exercises to fill in they weren't very effective as a guide.
I like these new covers! (Also FYI to make the chapters work on the video, you have to add them in the description and start with one that says "0:00 Intro")
Anyone who thinks this edition is going to be any better has not been paying attention. WotC has fired most of their development team. All they do is repackage previous settings and adventures because they are devoid of talent.
@@SevillaLorenzo-kd2ef It doesn't look like they're even trying to solve the major issues with the edition. Like the HP bloat that makes combat go on forever, and the fact that the combat isn't very good, they don't seem to be overhauling it in any way. I couldn't even finish baldurs gate 3 because of how boring the combat was in that game.
The art looks stupid and childish like Pathfinder. I’m sure they will ruin Greyhawk now. I don’t see the point in this when the old rule books from the 80s and 90s were so excellent. This honestly looks like My Little Pony with some devil people thrown in to try to be edgy. At least it’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive though unless you are a half orc.
The problem with the multiverse is that its something that exists but doesnt exist within the actual game. Like as players you arent going to be playing eberron and jump yo Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms. Of you did that in my game you aren't getting forgotten realms or greyhawk because i know nothing about them. It would be some very geneic setting i just came up with.
Wasn't Planescape going to be the focus? They panned Dark Sun and Dragonlance. Sounds like they changed their minds again, if they introduce world hopping..
you also forgot that in the early days of dnd, every adventure took place in the same world and in real time. a week in the real world equated to a week in game time.
Cool art, but... i hope it wont be just rewam for selling, but even artist saying it wont be like that, all inside me screaming: "yes it is just for boosting sales." Also i m afraid that hasbro dont give a sh1t about comunity, they just want us shut up and buy there product. But i hope they hired pabout comunity, they just want us shut up and buy there product. But i hope they hired poeple who care about D&D.
Every world, every game, everyone, everything is everything. A massive nothing-product devoid of integrity designed to convince you it is new and therefore improved, so they can make money. Taking great art and ruining it. Just get copies or prints of the original products they are ripping off and inject your own sense of creativity. This edition is best off ignored.
Yes yes ... but will they make the page numbers LARGER and with better contrast? Will they make the indexes better? Are they addressing improvements in the mess that is character creation in the PG? (Not that the information isn't there, but it's organized so poorly that the third party has come out with guide after guide to better address it.)
Using Greyhawk is a good idea. Not to keen as having Aasimar, Orcs, or Tieflings as core races. What races are they leaving out of the new PH? When ever you add new, the old gets left out.
Aasimar (DMG) and Tiefling (PHB) both were part of the core books in 2014 so they can’t be removed as this is a refocus that has to be compatible with 5e-2014.
Tiefling was included in 2014 core races. I misspoke in the video. Aasimar, Goliath and Orc are new to the 2024. I said it that way originally but when I summarized I accidentally said Tiefling instead of Aasimar.
I'm pretty excited for this! Even if it's mostly because the new monk looks way more fun. But also, the quality of life improvements for finding the more niche rules after much appreciated.
ive never played 4e, but the description of thr DMG sounds like theyre leaning into the 3.5 magic item constructuon system, and the dmg may do hit dice advancement like 3.5 did to scale up monsters for higher encounter levels.
They are replacing Half-Elf and Half-Orc with Custom Linage. So, you can basically build your own bi-racial combo with one set of rules. It's because the terms "half" and "mixed" are seen as pejorative these days.
@@direden 🙄🙄🙄I'M "half" and "mixed"! Am I pejorative? That's offensive to mixed race people, I'm SO sick of the woke nonsense! HARD pass. I'll switch to Pathfinder 2E.
@stormhawk31 that's the problem with change. In an effort to stop offending some people, they end up offending others. I'm not trying to justify their decision. I'm just answering your question. Obviously, you're not pejorative. They are just trying to change the terminology because it does offend some people. Both TSR and WotC have made significant mistakes in the past. They want to be more inclusive and get rid of potentially offensive terminology. The overall goal is to welcome more new people into the game. That... in and of itself isn't a bad goal. More players are a good thing. A larger hobby is a good thing. But change is difficult, and it's not always done well. And sometimes, no matter how well you make a change... people still get upset. And "upset" is the new normal these days. Getting upset about labels, language, and beliefs gets views and clicks. As long as the powers-that-be keep people focused on being upset at others... the powers-that-be get away with abusing the system.
Not worth buying Most people I hear talking about it we'll stick with 5e What I've heard about the new book it's going to be more of that woke crap Won't know for sure until we get to see the full release
Unfortunately, you will need to purchase new books to use the new rules. They haven't switched to a subscription model yet. In fact, a lot of older players would be really upset if they switched to a subscription model. (You could just continue to play by the old rules.)
@@simonfernandes6809Idk spells, feats and abilities are changed. There is the theory the awkward bonus action spell rule is going to be removed (as the abilities include the restrictions) so I think it's more than just a revision as some core rules are going to change. And rogues aren't going to be able to sneak attack on every turn anymore so that's going to be a big change if you have a new rogue with an old rogue.
Instead of using Planescape et al a better move would have been to lean in to Baldurs Gate and Waterdeep because of the external media. Why they don’t use BG3 characters as iconics is beyond me.
That last piece of art was clearly the characters from the D&D cartoon show. Is that art to be featured in the new books, or was that just included because you liked it? I want to get a better look at the whole piece of art now.
That PHB cover is FUGLY. Looks like someone took a peek at a United Colors of Benneton ad and decided to make a much shittier version. Where are the up-and-coming Gerald Broms and Larry Elmores? What's with the mediocrity these days? The interior art is INCREDIBLE, though.
I've compared it to something off a fantasy art Tumblr by a London advertising intern. I was surprised to learn this was the same artist as the 2014 cover until I learned he also did some of the 'diverse' Lord of the Rings MtG cards.
I am a little concerned that there was no testing of the monsters. We got the new updated characters, which are more powerful, but no idea what the monsters look like. Also, we get the players hand book and have to play for 4 months with old monsters because the monster manual doesn't come out until 2025. That just kind of seems weird to me.
Yeah, but it was the same way with the 2014 version. We figured it out... we played with just the PHB for a couple of months back then (with no MM at all.) Just using the few creatures in the PHB appendix.
With modern D&D being as complicated as it is, and the likely publishing model being similar to 5e’s, I wouldn’t expect a high degree of reliability for the monsters anyway… certainly not enough to be able to use CR to directly and easily build encounters. The DM or adventure designer will still have to compare HP and strength of attacks anyway.
Sorry each world in dnd should be separate and the multi verse crap ruins that. Some People did not play dark sun etc as it was not what they wanted or liked
True. We played in Greyhawk mostly because we played Gary's modules. Mamy people used to play modules, not campaigns in campaign worlds as for those, DMs created their own worlds. Everything's changed now. Doesn't feel the same. Not the same game, even.
@PatriceBoivin I started playing 5e back in 2014 because it reminded me of AD&D. I wasn't a big fan of 3.5 and really didn't like 4e. We started playing Swords & Wizardy because it was more like AD&D. Then 5e came out and I was really impressed. It captured the feel of AD&D but provided better (more efficient) game design. So, for what it's worth I think 5e is more like the "same game" than 3rd or 4th edition. To the original point I still run my games in a modular fashion. I mix and match adventures... to build sandbox campaigns. I assure you at my table it's very much the same game... only better 😊
Wow, they are still using AI art? The hands and faces are obvious. WotC is shameless. Hard Pass. (Also, Strongheart is not new, he was from 80's Mystara, like Warduke, they were both action figures.)
I think the whole thing is superflous.5e books are already good, with maybe the Monster Manual CR tweaking being the only core book that badly needs an update. Varied groups and the different monsters were already there, albeit for 4th edition. Nothing new under the sun, just swapping out playable races and repackaging old ideas with new art. Unless you are playing adventure league or tournament games, I don't see the point of this new edition, other than making us shell out for $60 books which in the past were half priced and better quality (except for the binding)
Okay. It could be considered the first "published D&D" campaign setting because the original D&D Greyhawk booklet was published in 1976. Which is why I said it was "the first setting for Dungeons and Dragons products." I was very specific with my word choice. Plus, several of the early adventure modules were set in Greyhawk... like Steading of the Hill Giant Chief 1978 (which was eventually republished in Against the Giants) and T1 Village of Hommlet 1979. If you're referring to the World of Greyhawk box set that wasn't published until 1983. Blackmoor would probably be the first campaign setting. But it wasn't published until later and not by TSR. Of course, you could argue the Braunstein setting was the first RPG campaign... but that's getting into the weeds.
@@direden hahaha…wrong again my friend, on all accounts…Dave Arneson published the 1st adventure module for TSR in 1975: Dungeons & Dragons supplement II Blackmoor: Temple of the Frog starting on page 28
Again, I chose my words carefully, "Technically, the first setting for D&D products." No offense to Dave and his legacy. I wouldn't consider that booklet a campaign setting. I've always considered Temple of the Frog which is contained in that booklet the first published adventure. Dave Arneson's "The First Fantasy Campaign" was published by Judges Guild in 1977. This added information on the actual Blackmoor campaign setting. But anyways... thanks for the comments
@@andynonimuss6298 you are correct, the first campaign and adventure setting began with Blackmoor, it was in Blackmoor that Gygax actually learned to play D&D. The very first campaign was “the Vicinity of Blackmoor” handwritten/hand drawn in pencil on graph paper, that began in 1971.
Great, in-depth analysis mate. This new release has got me pumped. I love the scaling of stat blocks (wish they had a CR template you can just drop on each creature in the MM); and the epic monsters
I hope they fix the absolute silly things it has, like wall of force being so ambiguous, charming being so hyper strong and the thing that disapointed me the most. They re-launched monsters from Mordenkainens manuals and they are still super boring and lame. I am of the opinion that every monster should have a bonus action or a reaction, or both, they just make multiattack to be the constant and that is just lazy design. Along with maybe universal Bonus actions that anyone can do so you don't just wait 30 minutes figuring out what bonus action you have.
I hate multiverses, it's lazy and poor writing. The different settings should be looked at more like movie genres. They shouldn't be in one big multiverse. The new cover looks horrible and the new art style/direction is underwhelming. Almost all the new art is boring.
@@XanderHarris1023 5e is power creep. 5e improved is worse power creep. Misty step, expertise these kind of abilities break encounters and make d&d boring. It's not fun if I win everytime.
@@archersfriend5900healing word is the most broken spell in D&D. Couple that spell with at least two casters using Silvery Barbs, and why even roll dice anymore?
@@archersfriend5900That's strange because I've been running 5e for 9 years and my players DON'T always win if they make poor choices. Get a different DM if you're a player.
I'm not sure why I watched this as I honestly don't play anything beyond 2nd edition AD&D. I guess I wanted to see what all the hoopla was about with modern 'Dungeons & Dragons'. Anyway, based on what I've seen, I can tell you right now, this is not for me... The art looks very similar in tone to 'Warhammer Fantasy' ( including the obvious use of A.I.) elements added to the mix. It seems as though WotC (Hasbro/Disney) has turned D&D into a STAR WARS/ Marvel Superheroes TTRPG that involves very little risk, but retains the outward appearance of posing such risks. Evenly matched encounters and healing surges might be a perfect example of this. But, I digress. As I was saying, I realize that modern D&D is not made for people like me in mind anymore. And i'm not hating on anyone for their enjoyment in life. But still, 5E just seems extremely watered down and overly simplified as a means to draw in preteens and fans of 'Stranger Things.'.I'm not sure if that's just part of the product's evolution and I'm just not the target audience anymore. Or, maybe. Just maybe. WotC sucks at making content, but are great with fads. I'm sure the younger generations of tabletop gamers will lose interest soon enough. Long before they see the alternatives in that there are much better editions of the game available. Not only with D&D, but there are literally thousands of table-top games out there to choose from...
Thanks for watching. From my experience... I grew up on AD&D and played it for 20 years. Played 3.5 off and on... but never loved it. I completely bounced off 4e. But in 2014, I was really impressed with 5e. I saw it as a return to its AD&D roots, but with modern conventions. I think it's a great way to play D&D. The game itself is good. Most of the issues you described come down to theme and intent... not so much mechanics. Most of the problems with 5e are simply solved by a good Dungeon Master who knows how to effect theme, tone, and pacing. For me, AD&D requires a good Dungeon Master who can effect rules and rulings. I use 3 simple house rules to make 5e better for me. When I ran AD&D, I had more house rules than we could count. House rules and good DMs are essential to any edition of D&D. I think the real problem... the hobby has grown way too fast... so there's not enough good DMs for the number of players. Additionally, many RU-vidrs make a sport of trying to break the game. And others make a living by trashing the game. Which creates some toxic corners of the fan base. This is why my channel focuses more on building up new and better DMs. I could grow this channel faster on hate... but that's not my way... and that's not what I want for the RPG community.
The swashbuckler is getting axed 1st they pbbly want to put as many 2014 subclasses as possible 2nd they are doing subclasses and races by axis, psi warrior vs arcane fighter, battle master vs champion, fiend vs celestial, dragonborn vs goliath, tiefling vs aasimar, hence, thief vs assassin and psi knife vs arcane trickster
