I had a campaign that my brother and I were both in once. He had a habit of force-feeding me any mysterious potions or other suspicious items we came across (to be fair, I was a dwarven warrior with by far the highest constitution of the party, but still). I would often react by attacking him, and then he'd retaliate, and long story short we spent about as much time fighting each other as the NPC's (since he was low level enough that none of his fey mage's spells could beat my defense stats, I usually won as long as the potion didn't f*quack* me up too bad; on multiple occasions he only survived by DM fiat).

I feel you, man... Had a GM with a wicked sense of dark humor, myself... AND the son of a bitch was fuckin' SMART! Don't get me wrong, I'm nobody's friggin' fool. I kind of pride myself on being able to catch plots and derail them, so it's not easy to pull it over at my expense... but this friggin' guy... SO I was still kind of a noob' in Character Creation, and had learned not to trust GM's in general with too many "plot-hooks" in a backstory... I did the cheap thing, and wrote out family, "Parents murdered when I was young... blah-blah-blah"... This guy bounces a few ideas off me, and there's this weird symbol I found in the aftermath of my parents' murder... Like a memento, I kept it around, so I could track down the bastards who killed my whole family... right? Well, as the campaign goes on, from time to time I'd find another trinket or bobble and sometimes a weapon or something with that symbol... AND I'd go out of my way to claim it or collect it, trying to track this evil thing, group, person... whatever. Well, I keep finding these symbolized items, sometimes magical, sometimes affiliated politically or with a guild or something, and sometimes just a thing with a decoration... ALL the while, I'm taking notes as a Player, trying to make sense of all this in my "investigation"... Then we're trekking through an unfamiliar part of the same swamp my Character grew up in, and we're after a fierce group of "highwaymen and swamp rogues"... Only as we find them and the battle picks up pace, I'm starting to notice a few "off putting" things that I really should have called out. Still, we were in the high-point of throwing dice, shouting moves and attacks, calling shots... you know, D&D battleground... like BIG time! Turns out, I played right into this plot, eyes wide shut! I chased one of the leaders of the bandits into his own home, since he'd used a sneak attack to nearly kill the closest thing to family I'd known. That's when everything landed all at once, and it turned out I WAS THE VILE SON OF A BITCH WHO KILLED MY WHOLE FAMILY!!! Yeah, I kind of hated the guy for that crack... BUT I had to take my hat off to him. That shit was for reals! He taught me a valuable lesson in "the game of subtleties"... A lesson I will probably never EVER forget. No matter how clever or smart you THINK you are, there's someone else with a plot that you just won't see coming! You could also consider, it's worth respecting a story-crafter when he/she is able to pull something off in a way you didn't expect... even when it's rough on your PC's... I mean, it's still adventure, so the struggle must be real, visceral, and powerful. SO... a good GM can figure out ways to get that out of you, even when you don't want him or her to. Gotta respect that. ;o)

Consider that we (the Party) entirely KNEW about the space-time wrinkle, so we KNEW we had stepped into the past some odd number of years... AND I still did NOT see that set-up before I stepped in it up to my friggin' eyebrows! *slow clap* INDEED! (lolz) It took a day or two to get the sting out of my mouth (figuratively speaking) because I'm just not ordinarily used to being "outfoxed" so horribly. BUT... after the initial shock (and novelty of the experience) wore off a bit, I have to tip my hat. That was eloquent, clever, and EVERYTHING a GM is supposed to aspire to be... and honestly, I've got to say, as punchlines go, it WAS hilarious... probably especially the look on my face as it "all came crashing in on me"... the shear gravity of realization about what I was just then DOING... to MYSELF! (lolz) SO maybe that's the point. Maybe that's one of the many unique little things we ALL should be playing for... the chance to experience something completely blindsided... just BANG... "there you go". AND it's okay to get a little pissed-off. I mean, you work hard to create a well rounded Character with as complete and useful a Character profile and sheet as you can... AND then something horrible rips your guts out and leaves you sitting there all sticky, broken, and confused. You still gotta respect the ingenuity to pull that off. I'm no genius, admittedly, but I'm usually pretty good at instigation. I love a good plot, so I can enjoy it even when I find myself on the ass-end of the gag... once in a while. ;o)
