D&D: The Tavern 

Great job! We'd love to do more if you dream up more medieval scripts. The cinematography, lighting, sound and post production really brought it all together. Love it.

As a player, I laughed. As a DM, I also laughed. But only on the outside.

0:29 you rewatch this and realize it’s the DM being passive aggressive towards the players, who are spending all their time in the tavern instead of exploring the world he created.

Gotta love the sad knight. "I'm a recovering alcoholic." "I was imprisoned as a child." "I once lost EVERYTHING in a game of cards!" "My parents were eaten by a dragon."

"...learning about its detailed history..." In retrospect, I should've seen the plot twist at that line. No real PC would give a rat's ass about the setting's history.

Oh dear gods we did this once! When we killed the local crime boss we just took over his tavern, then started a franchise in which the only adventures we would go on were to expand our business and reform drinking laws to be more lax. Any real missions that turned up we just stuck on the bounty board and took a commision fee. The GM just gave up and turned it into a real estate game

I like how they allude to the twist by mentioning how much it sucks that the barfolk have to stay cooped up inside all day! The DM is subtly hinting that this is a boring way to do the quest!

0:28 With the reveal that the "party" was actually NPCs and the bartenders were the actual party, I've just realized this scene was the DM's passive aggression made manifest.

"My parents were eaten by a Dragon." *"Good."*

The players railroading the DM. I'll be honest, that's ingenious.

Wow, did not see that comming. Well played ... well played.

"We -could- fight less generic monsters," says the DM. "Nah, dragon, also with insane amounts of treasure," says PC. Poor DM.

That reference to a different episode at the start was a nice touch

I might steal the "I'm too old and withered and mysterious" line for a future adventure.

"A dragon ate my parents!" "Good!" Oh my gods! xD

The dm's npcs are that detailed? including actually breaking the fourth wall in a way that a player would actually break them? This is the dm we all want but don't deserve.

"The adventurers come back from killing the dragon" "We kill them and loot them" "Go ahead..." *One TPK later* "What the hell just happened?" "Oh, right, forgot to mention, the adventure was worth about 8 levels of XP. Better luck next time"

0:54 arm waves in front of the camera to switch the little cup into a big cup so Ethan looks small. Absolutely genius.

All the hints about how generic and predictable it all was should have been enough to guess there was some twist ending but holy crap did I not see it coming. Well 'played'.

When you start with a good campaign, then you find out that your players are more interested in doing an evil campaign. Great twist at the end you guys. Keep up the great work!!!

The tavern, Ah yes. the one place everyone is convently at for no good reason.

Oh man, I did not see that coming. I love how the DM came up with this whole group, complete with at least one deep backstory and some intra-party banter, just as fodder to the actual party's shenanigans.

So I felt like there was an obvious flaw in this plan in that anyone strong enough to kill the dragon is going to be to tough to kill, but then I thought about poisoned food and ... nvm, this plan is pure brilliance.

Here I was thinking “Wow, the DM should really just let the players explore and not force their way through the story.” But then at the end I was like, “Oh. Oh! Ohhhh!! That is good! That’s very good!!”

"So then the guard says, 'My god, my name is Greg!'" perfect reference.

i like this in retrospect the second watch makes allot more sense and tells a story of a DM Trying his best to get players to move on.

Me: Hmm I wonder who's playing the old guy? Me three minutes later: OF COURSE ITS FRIGGING KYLE

When he said "I used to be the same", I was expecting that he would follow that with, "but then I took an arrow to the knee".

That is at the same time the worst plan and the best plan to ever have been devised by PC's.

This skit gets even better on rewatch knowing the twist. 1:56 the DM trying to pull the party back into an actual adventure, and 2:10 is their reaction once they’re shot down.

2:02 She says: "And you GUYS can come with us..." She is speaking to the old man but it's hinted that it's intended for the party. This little scetch has more foreshadowing than entire Sixth Sense!

Watching it again almost makes it better knowing they’re being meta because the DM is trying to get them to leave.

I mean sure, that's a roundabout way of getting your quest done..... And I've suddenly fallen in love with these characters....

When they made a comment about learning the lore, I knew something was off. Players never care about the background. :(

He tries to get his friends to go on a fun if a bit stereotypical quest and they outsource all of his plans to in-game NPCs who will inevitably die because the quest is not made for them. Truly a pitiful reality we live in. Great vid btw

I wonder if anyone ever has played a game where they where the quest giving towns folk... could be interesting.😃

I too played a MOBM (Mysterious Old Bearded Man) in a Discword game once, it was glorious. I sent NPCs on stupid quests to retrieve rare artifact that I then sold at twice the price I had got them. Notably I got the first wooden sword of Cohen the Barbarian, that I sold back to a fan.

i seem to notice that kyle has several loony characters that he plays to perfection. should we be worried?

I've tried watching this while imagining all of the NPC lines actually being said by an increasingly frustrated Ian DM, and I have to say it seems spot on. Fantastic sketch!

I can relate so much. my party tends to kill every NPC and questgiver with which I am trying to keep them on track.

This reminds me one epic quest in Shadowrun RPG (cyberpunk setting). Our group ocupied small ruined church and made it our local base of operations. Of course given location of that church and that is in Barrens (outskirts of city where all trash of city and worse live) inevitably we got rat problem in our house. As in devil rat problem. Turned out that month into living there we found out that deep under church (in remnants of sewerage) there is huge nest of giant mutated poisonous rats who started to move slowly upwards when they realized that we live there. We have no idea what kind of quest or solution our GM had in mind when he sprung this on us. Because out first reaction was "Fuck no, we are not going down there into those cramped tunnels to fight agains endless horde of giant rats". So we looked up some crazy doomsday cults around, picked best one for our purposes and send them falsified photo depicting Artifact related to their cult sitting right in middle of that rat nest along with some convincing mail. Well result were so amazing that in 45 minutes three schoolbuses (of course gangstered out) full with crazy cultist armed with everything fron knives and chains up to homemade flamethrower arrived to our church and without asking for permission rushed inside and through entrance in cellar went directly towards that rat nest. For next 6 hours we heard noises of combat from below before silence came. When we heroicly send scout to check it out (cheap expendable drone) all we found is that cultist died, most of rats died and those which survived no longer scurried arround since they had ton of food in their nest for the time being. Problem solved, quest completed :-D

I love how the DM is actually trying to get the players go on the adventure. Brilliant writing!

KInda reminds me of my first reaction when i played D&D with some friends and we got a quest from a King. "Can we kill him and keep his stuff ?" This started a wonderfull campaign of setting fire to villages we hadnt previously been to, evading arrest whereever possible and just in general being psycotich ... one of the best campaigns ive ever played.

I expected the knight to say I was imprisoned as a bartender

Rewatching this after the filmschool episode "making a hobbit" and noticing the reflection of the greenscreen on the table. It is amazing how much work Kyle put into this one scene. True dedication to the art!

And yet again my expectations are exceeded in all the best ways haha.

It took me until now to see Ethan trying not to lose it at 2:27. This sketch just got even better somehow.

The sound effect whenever the tavern keeper pops up is a great touch.

My favorite d&d story I have ever experienced is: So me and my brother are starting a new game and my brother and I were fairly new to D&D so I was an elf with high dexterity and he was a dwarf with high strength so in the middle of a battle he thinks it's a good idea to try to do *A FREAKING BACKFLIP* to try and hit one the enemies so he rolls a d20 and gets a 2 he breaks his leg and he can do nothing the rest of the battle and when we were walking around, but then he thinks it's a good idea as soon as his leg heals and we're and another battle he'll do a backflip catch an arrow mid air and throw it back, the arrow would have missed him if he wouldn't have tried that and he sprained his ankle so I had to kill of the rest of the enemies

Spoiler Alert: They beat the Dragon to death with a Chicken.

That twist was so great! I didn't see it coming, but it's such a nice new perspective on the classic tavern scene/opening for a game. Awesome work :D

The first time i played D&D started in a Tavern and i figured we were going to get a quest and go into the woods or something. Well as my character is talking to the bartender our dm says " you hear a loud crash and the splintering of wood as a half man half bird crashes through the roof cursing in abyssal" turns out that demons had decide to invade the city we were in

Unlike most people, my characters never spend a lot of time in the Tavern Because just like me, my characters tend to be kicked out

I was shook by how amazing the setting was. imagine my shock when it was someone's shop.

So I am extremely upset that I have just found your channel for the first time.. I have spent my last two hours binging every single video I can! Subscribed, and waiting for the next vid with delight!

One campaign I played had us start out as the level nothing npc's in a nowhere important town. Then the adventurers died in some haunted forest. There seemed to be a zombie apocalypse, so we had to go back in time long before we were even born. At some point two of our group disenchanted a pact stone that was keeping an evil Fey lord at bay. After making several new pact items to fix the Fey problem, we broke into a prison for psions. Then we headed to the mountains where we figured we might have to steal from a particularly powerful king. All the while we were searching for the blade of a very talkative holy sword... I love D&D.

Okay they are Geniuses just plain and simple Geniuses this is the most amazing setup for a game ever.

The moment I heard the "players" talk about how interesting the town is, I knew something was up.

That ending is one of the funniest comedic twists I've ever seen. I thought this video was a little derivative in it's play on how D&D NPC's behave, but that twist had me legitimately laughing. Also, the editing in this video was top notch. Truly professional stuff, it feels a whole other level above previous videos.
