In 1944 Nazi Germany had ruled “Fortress Europe” for four years. In order to defeat Hitler the Allied armies needed to cross the English Channel and successfully storm fortified beaches. The challenges were enormous. Dr. Heidicker examines the planning and execution of this great endeavor including the intelligence operations before and during the attack, the air war and its airborne assaults, storming the beaches, and the ongoing challenge of supplying our forces.

Very good presentation, the one minor point I take exception to, is your remark about how the Soviets did so much in assisting the Allied invasion of Western Europe by coordinating Operation Bagration with the Normandy landings. The Russian offensive on German Army Group Center kicked off a full two weeks after the British and Americans had a beachhead established in Normandy.

A very poor presentation. Britain had been at war since 1939. 5,000 American ships!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 6,000 ships took part in the landings. Of that 6,000, Britain supplied 79% of the warships, and 67% of the landing vessels. The Germans had no opinion of Patton until the end of the war, he did not even rate a German dossier before D-Day. The speaker totally fails to mention the crucial role of the British 6th Airborne, which was to take the allied objective number one - Pegasus Bridge. Eisenhower did not give the go-ahead for D-Day after others had said do not to do so. Montgomery said go, Leigh-Mallory merely pointed out that the weather was not ideal for air operations. Ramsay only pointed out that a decison needed to be made straightwaway if the shipping plan was to work. The Mulberry harbours were a British invention, and were British built. The pre D-Day deception plan was wholly British. Bagration was timed to start after D-Day in order to leave the the Germans torn between sending reinforcements to the West or the East. A bit like a Fire Engine being called to two diffferent fires.

It is high time Ghanaians took world history more seriously in College and universities.

This could have been predicted. The German invasion of Poland in 39 was supposed to be coordinated simultaneous effort. But … , they felt it was better to wait, only joining when the risk of not being able to claim territory became possible

The German counter-attack was clumsy at best. Ultra knowing everything the Germans were doing pretty much nailed that final nail in the coffin in the Third Reich's glory for Empire.

The notion that it took several hours to breach a defense the Germans spent years building is a silly one. It took years of training and manufacturing before the allied forces reached the beach. The several hours of fighting were the culmination of years of preparation on both sides.
