Think you have heard it all about D-Day? Well, think again. This is the story of the first Allied landing on 6 June 1944, and it wasn't on mainland France, but rather two islands lying off Utah Beach that threatened the entire American operation in that sector. Discover the full story here...
Dr. Mark Felton is a well-known British historian, the author of 22 non-fiction books, including bestsellers 'Zero Night' and 'Castle of the Eagles', both currently being developed into movies in Hollywood. In addition to writing, Mark also appears regularly in television documentaries around the world, including on The History Channel, Netflix, National Geographic, Quest, American Heroes Channel and RMC Decouverte. His books have formed the background to several TV and radio documentaries. More information about Mark can be found at: en.wikipedia.o...

My grandfather was a tank driver in the 24th Armored Reconnaissance Squadron, 4th Cavalry Group. He wasn’t involved in this operation but he landed at Utah a few days later. They fought continuously for the next 11 months. The hedgerows in Normandy, the breakout, the Hurtgen Forest, The Bulge. He was the kindest, gentlest, most loving man I’ve ever known. It’s always been hard to imagine what a group of steely eyed killers he and his friends had to become. He passed 5 years ago at 97, I think the last of the WWII 4th CAV veterans. He will always be a hero.

Thank you for this excellent, well researched, account. My uncle was in the navy and involved with D day. He was always very upset though that there was never any mention of the Brits supporting the US servicemen on Utah. He always said ‘we had to go in to help their guys who were stuck on the beaches - we had to go in to pull some off, and we saved quite a few Yanks, but you won’t see any mention of that anywhere in any of the histories ’. He was always quite bitter about that. Recently though I was reading Forgotten voices of D Day, by Roderick Bailey, and that does comment that there were a surprising number of Brits there too, and recounts some of their experiences.

@@Livvvid Nice rebuttal. As a 'couch potatoe historian' I have watched Hundreds of hours of WWII produced BBC TV series & documentaries when I was younger & not so 'aware' of reality and later 'based on fact' stories like Pacific and Band of Brothers, Letters from Iwo Jima , and Enemy at the Gates. And read books like Monty's battle in Egypt and Libya against Rommel's African Desert Group. So you do tend to get a bit of a heavily knowledgeable saturation that tends to influence your 'view' of the war from the non-russian aspect. So I tend to agree with you of your observation. Let's say, if Hitler had left Russia all alone and Russia had then focused on building up their own forces over the near 6 years of battle, whose to say they could not have then waited till all the other countries resources were depleted and exhausted and then taken over the whole western area to Portugal and say Turkey and Georgia then reinforced their positions. Now. wouldn't that be a whole New World!

My father had altered his birth certificate and joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1941 aged 16 and served aboard minesweepers. HE always got a little upset about people saying "D-Day 6th June." The minesweeper force were sent early on the 5th and were continuously sweeping until the main force arrived and because of the poor weather the main force didn't attack until the 6th. He always said "I was surprised the Germans didn't know we were coming because we were going up and down seeping and were clearly visible from shore."

Corporal Olson on landing: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap toward end of this war." Or he must have just said : "Oh sh*t !"

I do appreciate the details your stories helps with giving a fuller account of what happened during the war. For me, they bring better focus to how some things came to be back then. Thanks for posting.

*Dr. Felton makes video about Band beach.* Me: "Ah dang that's cool, can't imagine there being anything cooler than a forgotten landing zone!" *Dr. Felton makes video about an earlier, actually used landing operation* Me: "... damn."

Very interesting. However, one of the first landings on D-day was carried out by RN swimmers who had a red or green light to mark the edge of the beaches. My great uncle was one. He was dropped off by MTB on the night of the 4th June. When the invasion was postponed the MTB was sent to pick him up. Which he said wasn’t funny as it involved loud whispers calling his name. He swam back. They then bobbed around the channel and he had to do it again on the night of the 5th. Then he switched on the light at the appointed time. His next task was to de-mine as many obstacles as he could find. But very quickly he said he realised that he could be equally shot by his own lot so kept his head down until he could be identified as friendly. His name is Gerald Charles.
