And he took drugs recreationally. I read that he would hype himself up on the drug equivalent to methamphetamines before he went out to deliver his speeches. Which explains to me why his gestures are so wild and frankly over-dramatic for what is supposed to be a serious political leader speaking directly to his people/troops. It was a different time. the idea of being addicted and facing withdrawals and side effects from drugs just never occurred to most people. One of the most popular things American citizens sent to troops was a gift package that included a couple doses of heroin and other drugs to "keep up morale", or maybe that was WW1, either way it wasnt that long ago during WW2

Rommel's inundated land: welcome to knee-deep water, American paratrooper. In the dark, without a 'quick-release' system like the British had, many American paratroopers landed in knee to waist-deep water, became entangled in their parachute lines and could not orientate themselves in the dark, in the wet, cold water. So they drowned.

He, and a few other Field Marshals during this era, were very young for the position. Only six of the field marshals active during the war were born after 1890. (Out of twenty-six) It is also worth noting that four of the six field marshals born after this date, were promoted in 1945. Many of his peers had around 10 years on him, Rundstedt was born 16 years before Rommel for example. So yeah, not young, but young when compared to whom he was surrounded by; and the position he held.

It's worth it

+Siegfried Black - True to an extent; he was good, but ultimately still humand, and he did lose in North Africa in the end. What is of course notable about Rommel is that he was probably the most noble and gentlemanly of all the high-placed Nazis; in many ways he acted more like an old Prussian general than a Nazi one.
@sarasamaletdin4574

Yes, he is a bit overrated since since him having a "master tactician" image makes it look better if his opponents did not do great. And people want image of some German who can be seen just being patriotic with his actions.

Fun Fact: The Canadians at Juno pushed so far forwards despite heavy resistance (arguably second only to Omaha), that they were forced to retreat, due to British forces at Sword and Gold beach both being too far back to hold their Flanks, in part due to a Tea break on the very day of the invasion itself.

Cegesh I'm not feeling bad for the nazi, I'm feeling bad for the man. Heck, even if someone IS a complete piece of s***, it's better to at least recognize that they are, in fact, a human being, which means that it's not wrong to feel some sense of pity for general misfortune. That is different from condoning their acts, even if it doesn't seem so. I don't condone robbing banks, but if I saw a bank robber getting tortured, no one would say I was a robber sympathizer or such for feeling bad for him.

Glad you looked at the germans. No matter what you think of someone historically I think its always good to view and understand events, triumphs and tragedies from everyone's view point. It must have been terrifying being a solider defending the beaches, seeing a unending onslaught of allies overwhelming you. While it not easy for any side, at least attacking there is a way out to aim for. I can't imagine having the courage to hold a beach like the German soldiers had to. I think I would surrender pretty quick. I wonder if they kept on thinking they just had to hold long enough for the panzer's to arrive, idk.

No, the gun fired so fast that the barrel would get extremely hot true, but thats why gun crews had 2 sometimes 3 spare barrels. With a slight tug on a switch you could pull the barrel out and slide in a new one. It took about 7 seconds, and that's what most Allied troopers waited for when advancing toward an MG position, the barrel change.

5:33 "We didn't penetrate their armor!" At some point you should probably look up a video of an MG 42 firing, because it definately doesn't go "ratatata". It was nicknamed "Hitler's Buzzsaw" for a reason. Also, if WG's idea of outreach is throwing money at Extra History, I like it. Keep it up!

A minor detail....but thank you for orienting the beach obstacles correctly...specifically, the ones that were a bipod mount facing inland and a long pole from the apex leading toward the beach. It was designed to tip over any craft running up on it. Many of them in the D-Day scene from "Saving Private Ryan" were facing the wrong way.

in early 1944, I think most top-ranking generals knew the war was going really badly. Perhaps Hitler and some of his generals acted on purpose to ensure the Allies established a proper beachhead, so they could get to the german Heartland before the Soviets did?

It's funny to me that the day I decide to watch an Extra History series about D-Day is the day a national TV channel (France 2) decides to talk about mine-clearing operations (and they did so twice, at 1pm and at 8pm ; the first was an RAF bomb in a village and the second an anti-tank mine on a stick weighed down by cement on a beach)

To be fair, Rommel is most of the reason that the defenses in Normandy existed. He suspected that Germany was being lead astray to believe that Pas de Calais was the landing point, arguing that the beaches of Normandy were PERFECT for an invasion force, and that the allies had used beaches much like them before in the Mediterranean. Unfortunately for the rest of the Germans, his protests fell on deaf ears.

I think the best blanket term was the Germans gave the french the Old Pablo Escobar Dilema, and the French decided, "Fuck It... living has it's virtues" and that's how the tank traps covered the entire coast of France... one of the most Useful Resources the Allies ever stumbled upon.

Building the sophisticated bunker/concrete networks was french company doing, and they didn't have much choice. When the Germans asked them to do it, they weren't asking, they were telling them to do it. Forced slave labor was employed for most of the digging and unskilled labor work.
