My grandfather served . Dunkirk Normandy. Durham light infantry. When I was about 3 he described Dunkirk he was running his friends suddenly lurching forward and stumbling. But as I grew older if I mentioned his service he flew into a rage and left the house.

As an American, I appreciate the important help that our allies in Great Britain and Canada provided.

Just look at what today’s world is like, what a mess. This is not those soldiers fought for and went through that nightmare for. Makes me sick. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I watched the credits and did a little 'research'.... The closing credits say "2005 Castle Home Video". Castle Home Video was incorporated in 1985 and wound up in 2015. The narrator is Liam Dale. He also produced and directed it. He also filmed some of the sequences (e.g. the Spitfire I guess). Liam Dale is a Producer, Director and Author. My first search turned up that has done a lot of voice overs. No mention of him being a professional historian. Sue Hosler did the research and wrote the script. I found references to Sue Hosler as a writer and producer but whether it's the same person I don't know. Neither Liam nor Sue were listed as directors of Caste Video. LDTV provided archive footage and did post-production. It would be interesting to know the process. That is, was the narration done then the archives searched to add matching (or roughly matching, very roughly) the narration. I suspect that may have been the case. Sometimes though you may have an old French documentary for instance, that gets re-cut and has a new translated narration added. I've seen that before. The Spitfire in the opening and closing sequences is UK-based and has been converted to a two-seater. Because of it's ability to take a passenger it has made a number of TV appearances. To my knowledge there weren't two-seat Spitfire trainers (maybe some later in the war?). New pilots basically read the manual, climbed in and hoped for the best. I think this would have originally been a video release (probably on VHS). It was probably aimed at an audience of middle-aged men with an interest in, but not an in depth knowledge of, history. The Best Documentary channel is listed as location: USA. I'm assuming the Best Documentary channel bought out the rights to the videos so it could post them on youtube. I've seen that scenario elsewhere. They seem to have been set up in 2016 (just after Castle Video closed). They have a facebook account but there's not a lot of information there. Hope this puts it into context for all those who seem to be taking this as the view of the British public. It's a twenty-year old video done by some people using archive footage. I think it would be great if people asked some questions about what they are watching instead of taking it at face value. There is a lot of stuff on youtube that is not quite what you think it is. Consume intelligently. 😀

Back in 1973 I read the book Dawn Of D-Day by David Howarth for an English oral exam, the first question I was asked was this… What does the D stand for in D-Day? I had no idea, it was not in the book. She stated the answer was Deliverance, as in Deliverance-Day! I’ve never seen it referenced anywhere in any shape or form since! Is there any truth in it & if not why “D”-Day?? Sounds good though.

This documentary repeats the fallacy that the Rangers mission was ineffective. The guns, though moved to an inland location, were found and destroyed. This kind of inaccuracy made my father, who was a 2nd battalion ranger, very disappointed to say the least. The mission at pointe du hoc was one of very few that were actually successful in the early hours of the beach landings.

WW2 Russian casualties between 22 million/24 million China lost around 20 million remember the United Kingdom lost 384,000 soldiers. America lost 405,000 soldiers. So tiny in comparison. The whole world suffered terribly.

DDay was an overwhelming Allied front in every way. Meanwhile the German troops were mostly in the East interacting with Soviet soldiers. So DDay is not decisive, it will still happen due to the exhaustion of German soldiers.
