This video is of a “Special” train on the C&TSRR that was to give the feel and look of riding the “Chili Line” in the late teens. D&RGW #315 was repainted and lettered D&RG #425 to look similar to like it did after it was purchased from the F&CC. The headlight and pilot was also replaced by the DRHS (the 315 group). Recently restored by the “Friends of the C&TSRR” D&RG coach #292 and RPO #54 helped give the look of a train that ran on the Chili Line. This fund raising event was to help cover the cost of building proper passenger trucks for the passenger cars that will make up the historic fleet that will run with the #168 when completed. Video was recorded 9/24/2018 at Antonito, upper and lower Whiplash Curve, Big Horn Wye, Sublette, Osier, Cresco siding, Coxo crossing, Highway 17 crossing and Chama. No “Runbys” were harmed in making this video. Sorry about the sound, it was very windy.

My dad road a D&RG over Marshall pass to Gunnison Colorado. He rode narrow gage from Gunninson to Hamiltion and Baldwone to mine coal in the 40 in ww2. When he quite the coal in the 50's as a little boy we would go back to see his old mining buddy and fish. My dad is long gone now I am almost 70. Boy do I long for those day's. Love you dad

I lived in Taos as a kid and rode the C&TSRR a couple of times back then (early '70s). I love the Chili line, and I really wish Blackstone would do a short RPO in HOn3. As it stands I guess I'm going to have to build a craftsman kit, which is pretty intimidating, in order to get one to complete my consist. The brass ones are rare and pricey. Thanks for the video. Gotta get up there and ride this railroad again sometime!

It is an authentic D&RG “Wabash Slope Front” electrified box headlight, ex-463, 583. It is period correct for pre-1920 and based on the electric conversion kit currently in it, about 1910/15-1920.
@trainknut
@trainknut 5 лет назад
Honestly doesn't look too weird for the era, plenty of trains in the 1910s and 20s had big box shaped headlights, I think it was more of a limit in technology rather than style that necessitated big headlights, however it might have just been an aesthetic choice carried over from the days of headlamps.

This the Chili Line? I thought it was dismantled to Santa Fe NM. Oh well, we had to find someplace to allow this beautiful locomotive to range. Now I can see why NG trains contained 4-5 cars. And bless the restoration experts!

How is and how was, the power generated on these old engines? I mean, going back to the 1800's and further back, it would be interesting to know.....
@smeagolplaysgames4517
@smeagolplaysgames4517 5 лет назад
In the very early days, headlights used gas burners as there was no other way to generate electricity for a headlight, and electric lights weren't even popular yet as Edison wouldn't refine the light bulb until 1879. However, once light bulbs became more prevalent, steam locomotives began being fitted with devices called "dynamos". A dynamo is essentially a tiny steam powered turbine that on steam engines are normally mounted on top of the boiler close to the cab. They usually appear as a cylinder laying lengthwise along the boiler with a small exhaust pipe coming out the top blowing out the used steam. These devices are also responsible for the "whining" sound that US steam engines are known to make.
@trainknut
@trainknut 4 года назад
The big square headlights you see in this video and on other trains from the era, represented the transition between the older gas lamps and "newer" dynamos.

Good morning Bob. I have a question. Is this a good ride to Chama and back. They still use coal right? Do you know the cost of round trip? Thanks enjoyed watching.
@whitcraft4578
@whitcraft4578 4 года назад
Hi Ronald, This engine is really the #315 dressed as the #425 and is probable not going to run this year because of Covid 19. The C&TS is only running out of Antonito Co. to Osier and back. New Mexico is not letting trains leave from or return to Chama at this time. It is coal fired and is a GREAT ride. COACH CAR: ADULT: $105.00, includes an awesome lunch.

It was fully accurate, and I really like it and hope we will see it again for use with 168, which I suggested several years ago. It was back to 315 by the end of the year with 2 new coats of paint in a couple week timespan. Once again to reiterate this is how all the D&RG locos looked circa 1910, so all these people saying it “masqueraded”, 315 didn’t exist until the 1920s, it was 425, so just think of someone dressing in some old clothes they found from their youth.
