The "Bear Trap Stack" catches most of the hot coal cinders that often start fires in the dry brush around the tracks

Ok that's good use, but it looks so strange on that narrow gauge Top shot boiler 2-8-0

Christian Holbert The ridgeway stack that 346 has was actually primarily designed for use with narrow gauge engines. The C&S Master Mechanic created it back in the 20th century because of threats by the city of golden pertaining to fires started by sparks from coal fired engines. The Ridgeway Spark arrester (nicknamed the bear trap) was the result of this. All coal fired C&S narrow gauge engines had them and when the 346 was leased to the C&S during the 1930's, it did receive a ridgeway as well. The spark arrester was installed on 346 after a small field fire was created by 346 a little over a year ago. Since then the engine has gotten several other items on it changed to be similar to how it looked when it was leased to the C&S in the 30's.
