D15b vtec head swap engine guide. For an Honda Civic EF hatch. used a D15 block, y8 headgasket, gates racing timing belt, y8 cam gear, z6 head, and ARP head studs. Mini me swap means you have a D15 non vtec bottom end, and put a vtec head on to bump up the compression and add vtec. Reason it’s called a mini me is because the higher compression gives the 1.5l more horsepower like its brother the 1.6l engines. #d15bvtec #builtonabudget #civicEF #d15bv

Nice walkthrough, though I’ve read everywhere to use same cam gear as head z6 head z6 cam gear z6 timing belt
@MooreProjects
@MooreProjects 2 года назад
Z6 timing belt and the Y8 timing belt are the same. You can reuse the z6 cam gear if you are installing it on a d16 bottom end, not the d15 bottom end. D16 deck height is taller. The reason for swapping cam gears is to compensate for the height difference when using a d15 with a vtec z6 head. If not the timing will be off 4.5 degrees. Or you can use a aftermarket cam gear made for the z6 camshaft and offset it 4.5 deg and be ok that way too
@MooreProjects
@MooreProjects 2 года назад
It will run with the Z6 cam gear, but not at the best spot for TDC. Could possibly get pre-detonation or a burnt valve eventually

Yes sir! I will have questions, I have a d15b vt head fresh from the m.s. and a d16a6 block fresh from the m.s. I have a6 and new y8 head bolts for the build. So this is what I'm going with!!😊
@MooreProjects
@MooreProjects 4 года назад
Honda Mike ok nice! So technically that wouldn’t be a mini me since it’s a 1.6l block. The mini me with the 1.5l block and vtec head bumping up the compression giving it close to the same power as the 1.6l. Still going to be a great build for you! I have that same setup on the side also. You can build it just like a z6 motor as far as timing belt, bolts, water pump, bearings and rings are concerned. Just make sure you remove the oil jet in the a6 block before installing your Vtec head
@ZT_Performance
@ZT_Performance 3 года назад
D15b stock comes with a p08 head witch is the z6 head. The d15b has a tiny difference in the cam compared to d16z6 but its the same head. There's 3 different d15b setups A 12v roller cam vtec like the Vx, Hx A single vtec. And the 2 stage vtec having 2 solenoids for 3 difrent lobe profiles.
@MooreProjects
@MooreProjects 3 года назад
There is also the d15b from the 88-91 civics in Japan that are DPFI that had the non vtec head like USDM D15B1 and B2 And then the most common is the d15b from 92-95 with vtec. But yes you are correct there is a roller cam in those heads vs the Z6 head that is not.

You set your head to TDC using the plastic cover pointer and the factory z6 cam gear. Then swap to the adjustable cam gear. Make sure you are using a Z6 adj cam gear and not the y8. There is a difference. The z6 you will set it to about 4 degrees advanced. If you bought a y8 gear you need to set it to zero and start there. And your distributor you need to bring back to the center as your starting point also. Then use a timing light to get it dialed in at 12-14 Degrees BTDC

If you are wanting higher compression and vtec then go with a d16z6 head or d16y8 head. The y8 will give you the highest compression due to it having a smaller combustion chamber. @MooreProjects
@MooreProjects 3 года назад
Go with the d15b2 and the z6 head. If going for all motor I wouldn’t bore it 30 over unless your cylinder walls are out of round. That will lower your compression. You want the higher compression for all motor. That’s how the ‘mini-me’ gets the power. The vtec head has a smaller combustion chamber than the d15b2 head so it raises your compression giving it more power. Honestly if you are looking for more power than say 150hp then you should just get some rods and pistons and go turbo. You will have 200-300 hp no problem out of that setup and still come out way cheaper than a K swap
