If this I can't remember what the Texans called this stuff , but I think it was muck , but when it rained you couldn't get anywhere on it , it was like ice , I hauled livestock out there for years , when it rained we would have to wait to get off the paved roads until it dried out some Before we could get to the feedlots .
I know of a man (now deceased)who was ran over by a D8 , The operator was reversing back to make another push and the man was where he shouldnt have been and his feet were encased in the mud and couldnt get out of the way . he was completely ran over by the track he not only survived but was uninjured . The mud was so thick and deep the track just pushed his body down into the mud .Thick gumbo mud like this . .Louisiana in the early 70's
Ive seen a guy cut himself with a chainsaw into the belly when he was working on a leader and it collapsed, my cousin got killed in a manure spreader and in the area where i grew up was a farmer who got into a manure spreader and survived heavily injured. Such things are so horrible...
Don't miss cleaning tracks after playing in the mud. This operator looks patient & is obviously experienced to keep the unit moving material without getting stuck.
I'd rather be operating this D8 Cable......but if I can't I'll be content to watch this guy doing his work.......I'd stay here for hours, but apparently there are chore that I have to do too.......Great videos...Thanks !
I too knew a guy that survived being ran over by a dozer, Same circumstances -mud saved him.- I knew another guy backed over by his own dozer, it slipped into gear as he forgot to throw the safety brake down over the shift box on an old one like this one. The old wore out shifters will slip into gear on their own so worn in are they . When the scraper guys came back to the cut there was Elmer dead. It was guessed that he was urinating off the track or behind the machine-a D-8 when it slipped into gear and ran over him. One more. Pat Mcarthy in San ANtonio Texas was ran over by the roller operator and he lost one leg . THere are others too over a forty year period. I too am a retired Operating Engineer from the Michigan local. Yet another guy was standing too close to the haul road and a big chunk of clay feel of a 637 and hospitalized him.
Those 1950s Cat D8s have a very regular sound (chugga wugga wugga), strong slow but steady pace; still productive! Would like to finish the project by power washing that cat especially the tracks and undercarriage.
He's slot pushing. Using a trench of sorts to carry his material on his blade. There will always be a bit of roll over, but it's a typical way of pushing using a dozer. However, in this unique situation his slot is pretty dynamic.
