Love Casaneo brushes. Da Vinci makes ALL brushes by hand, something not many people know. Brushmaking in 🇩🇪 has a century old tradition in the area around Nuremberg, where many brush making companies are settled (KUM, Kolibri and others) Brush making employees are highly qualified in their field and often remain with the companies for decades. Well paid, stable jobs, with 30 days paid leave and maternity leave. I buy from Da Vinci and others like them with a clear conscience, not.only because of the quality but because of their fair labour practices.

Many years ago I bought two Silver range Swordliner brushes from the SAA when I was a member all because some artist said how wonderful they were. They're still with me in my redundant bin waiting to be sold on fleabay one day. I just couldn't get along with them, but your one looks to be a fair bit firmer.

It remains an experiment in progress 😃

I love Da Vinci brushes and I consider the quills to be different from mops-the quills are made to be versatile and do everything from fine lines to small washes. Mops are wash brushes. Love the daggers too.

You are quite right that there is often that distinction - in practice I get confused, and many brands do too. There tends to be an overlap, and they are often sold in the same category. I have a few Jackson's quills, for example, with a higher water carrying capacity and less inclination to do fine lines than my Jackson's mops. And you'll find many brushes also sold as 'quill mops' - just for example there are these ... artway.co.uk/artway-synthetic-quill-mop-brushes/?srsltid=AfmBOoqVYC9clJVgrvPJpycxfsUqkOOlUD4xhtGWQujRnJFCU7w15yFZlMk

Hi Toby, I own such da Vincy travel pencils, from sword and round number 10 as well as a very small one, I like them all. Previously I used such travel pencil in metal cover, with the humidity all of them had the metalic line dismantled, they are also difficult to be closed with care... I hope the new ones will survive longer ! Thank you for your videos, always inspiring

PS. Toby, you might enjoy Jackson's Raven quills/mops. They are good value for money and a pleasure to paint with. Not sure they have them as travel versions, though. Thanks for the video

I use the casaneo travel brushes for my plein air painting. I personally LOVE the fat barrel. I'm a bit on the older side with some arthritis and they are just damn comfortable. The other HUGE advantage in my book is that the fat barrels make it a hell of a lot easier to put the brush back together without catching some of the outside hairs. I have some other travel brush brands that I no longer use because over time, the brushes get damaged just from putting them back together in the handle. Davinci makes one flat that I have, but I really wish they would make a 1/4" flat (I work in small size format for travel). Having a push vs screwing mechanism for the handle doesn't make a difference for me either way.

Thanks Toby, I was wondering about these brushes. Escoda have had quality issues with some of their travel brushes, they replaced mine foc, but Im still not 100% with the replacements. My standard (non travel) Escodas are great though.

I do really like the Sasaneo, but even though I have a size 8 hand, i find these are very bulky and dont like them because of that, so I would not buy these. I prefer a normal slimmer handle.
