ornithopter
(from Greek ornithos "bird" and pteron "wing")
An aircraft that flies by flapping its wings.
In 1505 Leonardo da Vinci put together the codex on the flight of birds,
It was a collection of observations about the flight.
It also showed plans for some of the first ornithopters ever conceived.
He built a number of these aircraft and attempted to fly them near Florence without much success.
However In 2005 one of his gliders was successfully built and flown for a television series called Leonardo's dream machines.
2 years later a man from Norway named Peter won a prize During MAV-07 in the south of France for the world's smallest RC ornithopter.
It was called the hummer; it was originally a one channel aircraft but eventually a control system similar to the I-fly vamp was added, giving it yaw control.
With the control system the aircraft weighed a total of 1.1 grams.
It was seen flying for a few seconds on French national TV, the reporters don't say much about it other than one day it might be taking pictures of you in your back yard without you knowing it.
Interactive toy concepts picked up the idea and tried to develop it for release in summer of 2008.
A few videos from the Interactive toy concept booth at the 2008 Consumer electronics show demonstrate the di vinci flying for a few seconds and introduces it to the world.
Around October of 2008 ITC released a promotional video showing the da vinci flying in a small room for a few seconds
However In December of 2008 ITC postponed the release date to February of 2009. Between February and October of 2009 a few finally arrived on shelves for a short period of time selling for about $69.99 They wear very hard to find and didn't stay on shelves long, the price was also really high for a 2 channel aircraft.
But Because of difficulties with production and the economic downturn ITC took the aircraft off of production lines. Now you can pretty much only find them on e bay.

I know that "800 mile" feeling. A desire to control something with your own hands, to watch it with your own eyes, the anticipation of childhood dreams coming true, the freedom to tinker with something and take it apart on your own terms. Sometimes it's everything you imagined and sometimes it's a sad story of a wasted journey. The Avitron is almost certainly a better flyer then the Da vinci. There's a video with a guy that looks like Ba'al from sg1 flying an avitron and it looks very capable.

Just a note, this is most likely not proportional left-right control. Left or right just rolls the motor, and will tend to run to either end, which you observed.. Get it going straight, then to go right give it a very quick tap right. To end the turn, a quick tap left to get back to center. Then left for left etc. For a harder right turn, give two taps out then two taps back, etc.. Add drag to the motor spinning if it's still too quick around center motion..

@1makermovie speeding up the throttle makes up go up, holding the throttle steady makes it fly straight, lowering the throttle makes it go down.

@achemachew The infra red is pretty good considering how small the receiver is, but it was a problem at times and it meant no outdoor flight.

Basically went around and around in circles to the left until I bent the little rudder almost to 90 degrees to the right. After that final adjustment to trim I could get it to fly straight only with total right input. I have a feeling the wings are out of trim somehow. I need to take a look at this. Also I could not get mine to fly as high up as yours in the video - it pretty much sinks as it flies. I was considering taking off the nose protector to lighten it.
@maximeloiseau8050
@maximeloiseau8050 5 лет назад
If you are obliged to bent anything to the right, it will take a great part of the power because air drag. So don't be surprised ! You have first to find why the dissimetry and correct it, not artificially counter it.

@ht448 with most electric rc helis the average flight time is around 7-10 minutes, max flight times are usually around 30 minutes with special batteries but only on larger aircraft that can carry the extra weight. however gas powered helicopters can fly for extremely long durations.

@edgow13 light quick stick movements help, if you hold the stick all the way right or all the way left for more then a second the aircraft will spiral downward. the more space to fly in the better, and good eyesight helps since it's so small. I was happy when i could keep it in the air for more then a minute so don't expect to much from it.

@DAMIENloh1970 It's very fast and if you turn it to hard it will spiral down so you need to give it quick small movements. the turning mechanism doesn't always re center when you let of the controls so it can be difficult to fly. It is really tiny and cool though.

The background history research helps. The simplicity of the structure makes it more difficult 2 control n fly. But I feel the video shows lot of lights n less of the bird, man. Sorry to note. A part of the flight in slow motion wud have been nice with proper lighting. I remember here a recent video of showing a RC Butterfly with twin wings, flying just like as Mother Nature had made it ( well almost.)..I TRY 2 provide u with the data, if I can get it again, if u want. Thanx 4 d vid.

looks really great! i have a question about the design, the upper part is flexible? it seems to be much more efficient than the two arms ornithopters, just one arm and two axis, but i still dont understand how, so i imagine that the upper part is flexible like a wire...? Muchas Gracias!
@taoistflyer
@taoistflyer 7 лет назад
If you look at 2:23 and watch the slow motion video of the wings flapping you can see the arms stay pretty straight. They are just carbon fiber rods, but the wing membrane is flexible and makes the whole thing more efficient by creating less drag and more power on each flap.
