The essence of Daan (charity) is the understanding that you want to assist Nature in its course in whatever way you can. If after giving daan you keep considering it as your own money and expect that it should only be used in a certain way, then it is not a daan. It becomes a transaction where you have put the money to a good use.
Daan is not just the money. The highest form of daan is of the words, through giving away good words and feelings. If daan of money was the highest daan then no rich person would be unhappy. There are three gati of dhan (money) called uttam, madhyam and adham. It is impossible to control dhan. Ma Lakshmi goes at three places. The uttam gati is the best gati of dhan because the money is used for daan. Sanskarik people keep a portion of their income towards daan. The madhyam gati is where dhan is used for bhog. Not every one has the heart to give charity. Those who are not fortunate to give daan, use the money only on personal enjoyment. The adham gati of dhan is where people don’t give charity, don’t even use it for personal enjoyment but keep holding on to money. When dhan is not used for either daan or bhog, then Ma Lakshmi starts towards Nash because the law of nature states that what you cannot grow or maintain will get destroyed.
