So sorry to hear about your loss. Mine was 15 too and I still miss him constantly. I think it's almost harder that they live so long as losing him was like losing a part of me but I certainly don't regret it. Take care!

I think the fact that dogs are our children, and never get beyond needing us, makes it so tough for us to let go. I think more about my dog Maggie , a 50 lbs Lab/ terrier cross, than about my Dad sometimes. She was the queen of our small downtown neighborhood, and was a people person. She walked off leash with me and loved to visit the stores and get treats from everyone. She was so calm that she made a perfect friend for young immigrant families, who had no experience with dogs. Because I work strange hours, I had a large extended family of friends who had keys to my apartment, and would take Maggie out for walks and quiet nights of fussing in their apartments. I would often come home at night, and Maggie was out with her people friends somewhere, but I never worried. I never wanted her to be alone. She got cancer as she was approaching her 14th birthday, and she finally didn't really want her food , or roast chicken, so I knew it was time. When I took her to the vet, there were 11 people with me, and more who couldn't make it. But her important people were all there. We all held her and petted her as she quietly slipped away, peacefully, and happy to be the center of attention. There's no comparison between animal and people passing away, they are different. An animal is like having a perfect child for many , many years. You know that they really need you, while people, at least of a certain age, have to deal with the trip alone.

Oscar Wilde said telling a dachshund what to do is an exercise in futility.

dachshund's are very stuborn and it's adorable, can be annoying but still adorable also love how there tail wags when they do the simplest of things

My fingers are crossed for your sweet Doxie too (I always use the term "fingers crossed" when referring to things about my dog too, so your post struck a chord with me). And regarding Doxie getting your father moving, I relate, my dog keeps me getting out and about despite my depression. Sometimes, I wish my mum, who has mobility issues, would be comfortable having a dog, as I'm sure one would help her lose weight. Anyway, wishing your dog the best, and glad for the joy she gives you and gave your dad. xx

Same, I can tell he has to poop bad because he starts walking funny, like he is clamping his ass shut.... but he keeps looking for the perfect spot.... when it's cold I'm begging to please do the doo, he don't care... but when it's raining outside he runs to first spot, pees, lowers leg and poop in same spot in like 30 seconds.

That's too funny! My male Doxie/Chi(?) mix does the same thing when he poops, sometimes running from one spot in the yard to another and then spinning before the deed is done! As for the blankets, he gets into bed and waits for me to come and cover him up, with a kiss and cuddle. He's my Buddy!

My mini longhair is the same way. We live in the country. All sorts of critters walk through the yard. Deer, bear, groundhogs, fox, squirrel even coyotes. I believe he is looking for the strongest scent that he can cover up. Lets the others know “ hey this is my yard.”

Ah, yes. Dirty clothes were my late dachshund's favorite bed. My mother was a meticulous laundry sorter & Sparkle made sure there was always 1 white sock in with the black socks.

Well, get your dachshund to come over my room, and then she'll make a fort out of it instead

my dog does that with my sweatshirt, if I leave it somewhere on my bed, he will lay on it...its too cute though

Dachsunds have standards

guardiangarasu mine does too. She'll paw my blanket so I'll let in under my covers and she basically has to lay down so as much of her is touching me to sleep. It's fine in the winter but the last thing I want in the summer is a warm dog cuddled up to me.

My dachshund/terrier mix does the exact same thing!! Waits for me to lift up the blanket, goes under and cuddles as close to me as she can, and doesn't move until it's time for her to wake me up in the morning with a precious kiss on my cheek. The BEST way to wake up in the morning.

Have any of you, upon bringing a new dachshund into your home, decided that THIS one would NOT sleep in your bed? If so, how'd that work for ya?

Mine too. It`s fun when i tap the pillow and he starts growling :D

My wiener dog would grab the corner of my blanket and spin around with it for 5 minutes until he apparently wore himself out and went to sleep. Then I would wake up 2 hours later with most of my blanket removed and a spinning wiener dog at 5 AM. If you like restful sleep, don't get a dachshund!

My dachshund always steals all my blankets and pillows and she makes it a Giant nest for her to sleep in lol

Good luck getting her to sleep in any other bed than yours. Once the Doxie has claimed it, she'll never willingly give it up.
