Its wild, I grew up in poverty. This song has always talked to my soul.. The line that really gets me, is the same line that pulled at " dads heartstrings ". That line is " they say i got to learn but nobody's here to teach me, if they can't understand it , how can they reach me? " . you can see the gears turning, his soul welling up when he hears that cause its true. It so true. Its something spiritual🙏

I think he’s telling a story of what it’s like growing up in the hood. Becoming a gangster. People tell them they’re supposed to do better, but they don’t know what better looks like. They have no model for it. Everything is total chaos where he’s from. Your dad probably felt spent afterward, because that’s the feeling he’s conveying here. Like no hope of getting out.

It’s not just the hood. I grew up on poor neighborhoods in 60s-70s and my mom pointed out how many kids never went beyond 5-10 blocks. There were kids my age who had never been to the mall. My mom was a teacher in the head start program in area and she tried to expose the kids to as much as possible because many of them came from poor immigrant families and parents were working to survive so it was the streets raising the kids. The worse part is these programs failed because you can’t just throw money at the problems. My mom would make home visits and actually took interest in the kids. She would do the lunch like “family style” where the kids were passing the dishes and using manners of please and thank you. It was always chaotic at the beginning of the year but her kids usually went the furthest in school and would come back and visit her. What’s sad is she was criticized by many peers for actually giving a damn and wouldn’t lower her expectations or standards for them just as she wouldn’t for her own kids. As she said being poor wasn’t an excuse for poor manners, having a work ethic, nor applying yourself and doing your best. Being poor isn’t a crime nor anything to be ashamed about. It’s not expecting individuals to contribute to society or to behave with respect for themselves and others. I grew up knowing that being poor didn’t define you nor your character and still know many families who struggle financially but have far more good character than many rich people I’ve worked for. But the cycle continues with crime and dependency simply because we try and treat the issues with money (that is actually stolen and not used properly - and instead goes to pork programs making greedy politicians wealthier) and continuing with the lie that poverty is the cause.
@alcoholicataracts

@@carolynpeca2818 The way you described this is perfect and really hits where I feel it the most. I've grown up in the hood my whole life with a single mom, my sister, and me. We always just barely get by, but sometimes my mom goes hungry to make sure us kids eat. It's very, very comforting and encouraging to see problems such as these be spoken about truthfully and respectfully.

Your dad gives such an honest reaction to the songs he listens too and he almost dissects each verse to give a better understanding of what the artist is trying to get across to whoever is listening. He is so open and accepts some of the most debatable verses that people like to trash or look at as negative verse and turn it into a more positive verse. Dad mentioned being spent after listening to the song and I think I feel something very similar. You don't get a hint of desperation or seeking help from the tone of Coolio, but the lyrics tell you all you need to. He's explaining the desperate situation, the helplessness, the dead end he's facing. It's a selection between an absolutely awful choice and extinction and others who have had to band together and make that same decision. The situation is so overarching and overwhelming that a single person can't fight it and survival requires banding together with others to just simply make it through, to merely subsist. But, that wave is so overwhelming and crushing that, even with a band of homies, it's just enough to stem the tide, not to overturn it. I can only imagine the anger, sorrow and helpless desperation a person feels facing those odds.

Coolio got some bops, he's not a one hit wonder....just underestimated in my opinion. Love the content, it takes me back to mainly my twenties. Can you have your father listen to some more female rappers like Roxanne Shante, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Missy Elliott? And that's just a morsel of female rappers that influenced my life. I love the bond you all have! Love and light!

I mean no disrespect with this comment but I seen Dad said he felt drained from this song and wondered if the viewers felt the same. A lot of us don’t feel drained from this because the song and every lyric is reality for us we feel his pain through and through, he spoke the honest truth about the “Gangster’s Paradise” which a lot of us were born into. I love the videos BTW keep dropping them this stuff is great for the culture ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻

Your dad is such a amazing person. Your guys videos genuinely bring me to tears on occasion because music has always been such a massive part of my life and rap and hip hop has always made up the majority of what I enjoy listening to. I have always wished Ii could expose my father to the beauty and emotion that can come from rap even with swearing and some pretty dark topics. But he would never give it a chance. So treasure your father he's one in a million for being this open minded, compassionate, and the willingness he has to spend time with you doing this is so awesome and beautiful to see. Wishing you guys continued success with your channel.

It’s neat hearing from the older generation’s perspective with the insight of having the knowledge of where the samples come from and seeing the difference how the hip-hop artist twisted and made it their own but also paying homage to the original artist. You guys are a great duo! Keep up the great work 🙂
