I think that and the fact he's shirtless also builds this double parallel. On one hand, about how mainstream modern rap is about bragging about how great the artist is (and how many women they fuck is part of that). Like, the lyrics sound like your usual mainstream toothless rap, but the contrast with the video shows that it's all part of the media distraction. And on the other hand, I think he's also shirtless (and the first shot of him is from the back) as an allusion to slavery ("look what I'm whipping up" also references that imagery - black slaves were whipped on the back).
@missclaireee1
@missclaireee1 6 лет назад
I was touched when dad asked if you were ready to continue considering how rough the images were. The white horse...”And behold a pale horse. And the name that sat upon him was Death. And Hell followed with him.” Book of Revelation Ch 6, v 8. I also noticed the body type is similar to a police horse. So I see both a reference to death by cop and the apocalypse.
@teachoc9482
@teachoc9482 3 года назад
Yes, I thought it was a symbolic police horse, because it was white, the color of innocence, and the police are always assumed to be good heroes, but actually abusers of the system.
@nokindred

Usually in visual narratives a white horse represents a hero.
@emmao6578
@emmao6578 3 года назад
@@nokindred I think it's safe to say with this song that it's unlikely to be as simple as that, a white horse has many different meanings, it seems likely to me that various associations of white horses were considered when planning this video because they all work so well together. The hero on a white horse is a common theme but so is the biblical white/pale horse from the four horsemen of the apocalypse which can mean either conquest, death or pestilence depending on who you ask. Now a supposed hero that promises good but then brings conquest (a key component of colonialism), death and pestilence seems like pretty relevant symbolism for this video don't you think?
@nokindred
@nokindred 3 года назад
@@emmao6578 that's a valid interpretation. I think it's also likely a statement that white people always view themselves as the hero, which is why the white horse specifically was used and given the overall video context is more likely.
@emmao6578
@emmao6578 3 года назад
@@nokindred I never disagreed with the horse representing a hero in some way, you can see that from my last sentence in previous comment. It just seemed that you were correcting the OP and saying that a hero was the only symbolic meaning the horse could have, which is what I disagreed with.
@BonusRoundTube

The horse and the hooded rider is alluding to the Horsemen of the Apocalypse from the New Testament's Book of Revelation, in which death rides on a pale horse with hell following behind(police car, riots, etc).

It could also symbolize the heroin/ opioid crisis. "Horse" has been American slang for heroin for decades. For instance " white pony" was a Deftones album that spoke frequently about heroin addiction. Maybe Donald chose to include this because there are multiple interpretations. Its an equally relevant image either way, and that's what makes it genius. Its designed to grab the attention of people with different outlooks for different reason.

HERE'S WHAT SO MANY PEOPLE MISS: 1) He is in the video, but hidden behind the pillar 2) Guitarist looks like Treyvon Martins father 3) Glover isn't wearing a shirt. Proud of his black skin? Perhaps. In a world of bleachers. 4) The double gold chain. Something to do with America's history. 5) His pants - is that the pants of the North, or the Confederate South? 6) The big-eyes look is Uncle Ruckus 7) Black on black crime. Glover shoots his own brother behind his back! / / / Gun violence 8) The way he is standing, after shooting dude is Jim Crow. 9) What's with the zombie dancing? Does it represent how zombie like (numb) people are in America? 10) Gun violence & all the debates on gun restriction 11) "Police be trippin" represents the COPS (Criminals On Patrol) and all their very public executions with the pathetic Government doing nothing about it. 12) African dance (leg sway). 13) Christian choir singing "Get Your Money" … which is typical, useless Western Churchianity. Prosperity preaching that isn't the Gospel at all. 14) Gambino comes in happy, but then realizes that what he entered for is NOT what they are singing about, and his expression changes from joy to disappointment as if he realizes that "this Church is no benefit to me at all" … and pulls the trigger. Reminds me of something: [Mat 5:13 KJV] 13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. True. If salt looses its flavor, what good is it? It is thrown in the trash. The influence of the American Church is in a pitiful state because of the Godless preaching and the hyocrites and toleration within. The salt has lost its flavor! 15) DONALD GLOVER DOES NOT HAVE TATTOOS! No one reviewing his videos has even touched this fact. So, WHAT IS THAT TAT ON HIS INNER ARM? WHAT DOES IT SAY? I tried to pause to read it, but it can't get a clear picture. But I looked it up, and Glover does NOT have tattoos, so that tat on his inner arm must mean something. Everyone who is reviewing the vids seem to miss it. Y'all are so used to seeing tats, that you don't even notice it, but I notice, and I looked up whether or not he has tats in real life, and he doesn't, so that tat is FAKE, and it must say/mean something. 16) He over-extenuates "I'm so pretty" that its causing me to wonder if he's dealing with the vanity of a female … or the flame of a HOMOSEXUAL, GENDER-CONFUSED MALE. Cause the "men" tend to over do it more than the women - they act worst! 17) Kids on cellphones, not adults. They are the ones growing into this new technology, always on some device instead of outside playing like we used to. And the scarfs over their mouths probably represents "seeing evil by not saying evil". Stupid people wil record you getting hurt, but don't even think to put their stupid phones down and get you HELP! All the idiots do is say "worldstar." Back in the day, we'd beak up a fight, or help the person who got hurt without thinking about it. 18) Police car - but violence all around. Powerless to stop the NATION when it get's to the point of National Civil Unrest … and I believe this country is heading that direction. 19) Rider on a white horse is NOT death, contrary to the opinions of people . The rider of the white horse is GODLESS RELIGIOUSITY. There are a lot of religious nuts in the planet who talk about God like they are a #1 fan, but they are NOT true followers and they do NOT obey/serve Him. The FIRST rider is the white horse. The LAST rider is Death, and he is on a BLACK horse, not a white one. So, all the people who review it, saying that it's death, they are ALL wrong. 11) No idea what he's talking about, but I do know that contraband and hundred bands point to DRUGS. Perscription AND illegal! This country is full of so much retardation, I'm convinced that its drugs. Drugs in drinking water. Poison in foods. Flouride. Folk are just messed up! Blacks AND whites! Then he lights a joint/spliff. Represents the drug us in America, possibly the legalization of marijuana. 12) The 17 seconds or silence are the 17 kids who were killed in the shooting. And observe the face of the little boy before he ran off - he was terrified. 13) No idea what the old cars represent. There isn't a single modern car in the shot. Try counting them, and are they the same make car (all Hondas, or all Toyotas, or all …?) 14) Terrified Glover running from white people. That's too loaded to even guess.

I'm randomly revisiting this video and the reactions to it, and honestly, this might be one of the most interesting parts of the video to me... the choice that he made to evoke a racist caricature with his own body, presentation, and movements. it leads to a lot of potential thoughts... thoughts about how African Americans were dehumanized, how African culture was treated as exotic and divergent, and how caricatures like Jim Crow served to alienate black folks (a perceived aberration) from white folks (the perceived norm), both for traits that they actually had (residual African culture) and for traits that were ascribed to them by whites playing black stock characters. I think it's interesting because it shows how real people bear the weight of this kind of racial reputation. caricatures like Jim Crow stick out as a very old fashioned example, but this asks us how far past this we've really moved, and what kind of weight something like that leaves on the shoulders of those whose culture was saddled with that baggage. on top of that, the more literal role of this Jim Crow caricature in this video seems to be almost some kind of harbinger. he shows up, enacts violence, then walks away while others swoop in to deal with the fallout in his wake. it's almost like he isn't literally the person doing the violence so much as he is representative of whatever violence exists in the people who do this sort of thing. he slips away because the root of that violence is never addressed to the point where it stops. and it's shocking how overt he can be while still slipping away, over and over... becoming the focal point of the video, even while chaos happens around him. which could in turn be linked to how gun violence becomes a spectacle in the news every time some new big tragedy occurs, or a commentary on how things like vanity and the entertainment industry take the forefront in our minds, making it easier for heavier issues to take a back seat. I like that there are a lot of ways to read this presentation. it makes you think through all of the possible connections that could be made, instead of leaving you with the idea that there's only one right answer.

"It's good to see artists who are conscious and not just about the mumbling." Totally agree. I'm loving reading the comments with explanations of the imagery and things I missed. The song has this menacing bass line, communicating constant danger / impending doom, the always rising synth like sirens, and then the clinking percussion on a marching rhythm - like short ankle chains. Gambino's lyric, "This is America, don't catch you slippin' now" while he dances as long as the music plays, overlapping that gritty bass, seems to call out the fact that a black American's life is always at risk so you better dance, don't slip, and all in a few long single shots - feels exhausting and crazy-making. I don't know if I've ever encountered such a successful representation of what being unprivileged/non-white in America might feel like. I'm sure there's a lot more I didn't absorb. Makes me want to watch the video in slow motion.

I’m two years late, I just wanted to point something out Notice that at the beginning the gun he shot the guy with was taken and handled with care, While the body of the man was dragged along the floor (Later you can see the body drop from the top floor in the background) I’m going to guess that it means america Cared more for the weapon than the victim. Even in the church shooting, The gun was taken in a red cloth and the bodies just laid there. Also “This a celly, That’s a tool” *Camera points to people on their phones* This is clearly showing how people want to film everything and post it, Using their phones as a tool and not calling the police or anything. (i’m bad at explaining sorry) The man with the black hood on the white horse in the background was a biblical symbol for the apocalypse. /Imma guess JUST GUESS about this next part/ Notice how the man that was using the guitar was back on the chair when childish gambino was dancing on the top of the red car, I’m *GUESSING* That could mean that the Guitarist that died could easily be replaced with another guitarist. Notice how they are dancing upfront while everything goes on in the background? Could mean that the media is a distraction to the things that are happening in america right now. Another thing, The people dressed up dancing behind gambino could be taken as (white?) citizens that follow americas rules and laws who aren’t being harmed, following gambino (america) while everything is going down.

I literally got more emotional watching Dads reaction to this , seeing him get the full hit of what this song/clip is saying, and yes, it's deep. Older people will understand the "comical" black smile, and performing/dancing and what it represents. It's a hard one to watch (if you are a conscious, feeling human) because it's in your face... but so many will simply not see the deeper imagery. I'm only discovering Childish Gambino myself. I have also learnt so much from reading the comments.

Just want to put this out there for anyone that might find it interesting, also due to people frequently seeming to be confused about what (or 'who') 'Jim Crow' was... 'Jim Crow' is actually the *'Jim Crow Laws'* which were a collection of state and local statutes that legalized racial segregation. The imagery you are referring to comes from a white man Thomas Dartmouth Rice who performed a popular song-and-dance act supposedly modeled after a slave. He named the character Jim Crow. Rice darkened his face, acted like a buffoon, and spoke with an exaggerated and distorted imitation of African American Vernacular English. In his Jim Crow persona, he also sang "Negro ditties" such as "Jump Jim Crow." The poster that everyone knows as an image associated with the *'Jim Crow Laws'* is the cover of an early edition of 'Jump Jim Crow' sheet music where it shows Thomas D. Rice pictured in his blackface role; he was performing at the Bowery Theatre (also known as the "American Theatre") at the time. The image was highly influential on later Jim Crow and minstrelsy images, not to mention the iconic representation of the awful *'Jim Crow Laws'*.

If we're being technical there was a white horse and a pale horse, the white horse carries Conquest, defined as "the subjugation and assumption of control of a place or people by military force" which also has a lot of meaning in this video. The pale horse translated more literally means an ashen yellow greenish color not white, although the death association is obviously still relevant because of how common the idea of, pale horse = white horse = death, has become

Seeing people's reaction from smiling while he's dancing to a gunshot to the head and how everyone's facial changes in a negative way and a shock weigh says a lot about our society .I like to see the reaction of people because it really shows people's Humanity that they're still good left. By seeing people's reaction to that kind of violence shows that in them they have a spot of Light. We will see and feel what's right and wrong.

Take the entirety of the video into account...so, so many metaphors AND double entandre's. My guess is the "pale" horse has more than one meaning. I also appreciated that you both watched the video together. One of your commenters asked "how do we get out of it?"...in my opinion, WE START by listening to those who have already fought to get us this far (respect our elders), then we "release" our sons and daughters unto the world to walk down a street, have a coffee at Starbucks, fall asleep at the college they're enrolled in, all the time realizing and understanding the dangers our elders experienced, and their parents feared. Freedom is not a price that comes cheaply!

I think the guitar represents Music, the black man represents black music b4 slavey. When he’s shot and in bondage represents the death of good cultured black music, that’s why he returns at the end of the video because music will never die and also I think Childish Gambino is America. That’s my take on the first scene. The white horse and the police car, I think represents, if you continue to live that lifestyle getting your money by any means necessary can lead to death or in jail
@panama2468
@panama2468 6 лет назад
Brandi Campbell following on that tangent of music. During slavery music was spiritual and uplifting bc it was a way to keep hope alive. Notice after he shots, the music changes to hardcore rap. The music is not longer hopeful; it's an angry reaction to the violent going on, particularly against the African American population.
@Chibabygirl19
@Chibabygirl19 6 лет назад
panama2468 Agree! Not just violence in the Black community, but among our youth. The music today is to influences the younger generation and keep them dumb down, because the children are our future, they can make real changes and America is afraid of that. That’s why you don’t hear much play on the radios and tv’s from ppl who is trying to organize a nation and speak facts!, not always about money, cars, clothes and hoes... This is the reason why he’s running at the end of the video, after he awakens America with this video, “America” is coming for him to shut him up! Like they do any and all black woke people with a message to up lift the world.
