100% agree with the In the Basement suggestion. It's easy to think a lot of these sounds are electronic and not real instruments but seeing the band's skill in bringing these songs to life live is really incredible. I think your dad will appreciate that.
Based on the fact that your dad loves classical music and this album, I think he would love "A Moon Shaped Pool," their last album of date. It's a beautifully sad album full of AMAZING orchestral arrangements. I HIGHLY recommend this for you two to listen to.
Fun facts about this album: That trippy sound of the intro to Nude is achieved by reversing the outro of the song. The song was worked on by the band on and off starting from the OK Computer sessions until the final piece of the song, the bassline, was written by Jonny Greenwood (the band’s bassist). Videotape is the band playing a trick on the listener, as the true pulse is half a beat earlier than it implies. Once you nail it down the song becomes even more amazing. In the bridge of Reckoner, the background vocals can be heard singing “In Rainbows”, which occurs at the golden ratio (1.618 or 61.8 percent) of the album’s runtime. 15 Step’s title has two possible meanings. First, the song is in 5/4 time, and 15 is divisible by 5, so you could say that the beat has 15 steps. Second, the tree Antiaris toxicaria produces a poison so deadly that it’s been described in China as “Seven Up Eight Down” , referring to the number of steps a victim can take uphill and downhill before dying.
Colin is the band's bassist, not Jonny Edit: oh and on House of Cards, what sounds like strings in the background is actually Jonny rubbing the serrated edge of a coin against the strings of his guitar
Great. I listened to this and reviewed each song with my dad. It’s such a great album to introduce other generations to Radiohead. What a lovely connection you both have. My favourite is Weird Fishes, followed by All I Need, so yours in reverse. But then again, I’m 50 and my dad is 75!
Reckoner blew me away when I first heard it. Just goes to show how personal music is. Great reaction, so much better than watching people pretend to love everything they hear.
And tbf to him, I wasn’t too crazy on Reckoner either when I first heard it, but not because of the vocals. The percussion I thought was a little repetitive. It wasn’t until I listened to the full song and heard that bridge part that I started loving that song and now I don’t mind the percussion at all, in fact I love it. It was a grower indeed.
I had a truly euphoric experience when I heard reckoner for the first time. And at that moment I was listening to the entire album for the first time (while stargazing, which did help XD). Reckoner really jumped out for me. Its almost like I have a personal relationship with each individual song.
So nice to see his reaction but also your reaction to him embracing this album, one of your favourites. Truly a beautiful moment of Father/Son bonding together over music. Love to see it!
I’m not sure if you are taking recommendations, but if you are, I highly recommend Jeff Buckley’s album “Grace”! Without him, Radiohead wouldn’t be the same, as he inspired and gave confidence to their lead singer, Thom Yorke, to start singing in falsetto himself. The album is a beautiful masterpiece that I think everyone needs to hear at least once.
In Rainbows was the first Radiohead album I ever listened to, because my roommate told me to download it -- on the night of its release. The band set up the website so you could pay $0 which suited me just fine, as a poor undergraduate student :-) In Rainbows is definitely the best Radiohead album to show to an older listener, since it's very melodic & relatively low on angst
Been listening to Radiohead since the 90's and it's great to see the younger generations appreciating their brilliance. To me, being a Radiohead fan indicates a lot of good qualities in a person and seeing a zoomer recognize the musical gems found in Radiohead's catalogue is a breath of fresh air.
The contrast between lyrics and rhythm in the Bodysnatchers adds more to the experience in my opinion. They're not rock'n rolling and having fun, I read it as he's frustrated while singing it and wants to get out. Radiohead never endorses the depression, they express it so they can get over it.
wow this guys amazing at interpreting the lyrics, had fun listening to him breakdown the songs it gave me a whole other perspective on the music and lyrics.
I know a few people have already pointed this out, but having All I Need as a favorite song is awesome. It’s definitely my favorite. That crescendo at the end makes me splooge
Well, boys, buckle up! Radiohead is no genre. They have done every genre and made a few. It's very interesting to hear someone try to peg them into one. And you are totally right there are no other band who sound like them, except the ones they have inspired, like Muse, Coldplay... From the top of my head. You guys really have to see live from the basement after this. I definitely have gone mush pit at parties to Bodysnatchers. 😁 And it's crazy live, Radiohead fans don't generally do mosh pits, but we do rock. Yepp, Thom's lyrics are usually quite a trip. Love it. His voice is just angelic, I look forward to you seeing him so Nude live. That makes me cry. Radiohead grew up in upper middle class in Oxford, so their background is not bad, but the commentary on politics in England and in the world is absolutely there, but also a lot of Thom himself and how it and life effects him. But he is definitely not from the wrong side of the tracks.
I wrote a looooot more, but it seams to have been edited away by myself. Anyways thanks for a wonderful trip! Video tape is about leaving a video tape for your loved ones to watch after your are dead. Other than that, check out Jonny Greenwood in general and all his does to this band. To be honest, they are all brilliant, so lucky that a bunch of teenagers randomly found each other and was this good.
Thom had the same vife/ partner for a lot of years and also during this I think. They ended up breaking up and she then passed from cancer, the result of that and the result of Jonny Greenwood having becomed an academy awards nominated computer of soundtracks can be found on A moon shaped pool. That album is just so sad and have strings like nothing you have ever heard. Suggestion : Do Blur - The ballad of Darren or some of their older things. You might recognise him as the guy from Gorillaz, but Damon Albarn has written operas and God knows. He is a Genius.
@@the_oslovian first of all, we can always count on you for an amazing set of comments. from the bottom of our hearts thankyou. also yes! an album recommendation! I have 2 lined up for our next videos but I am adding that to the list right away.
@@theeforefront Love it! 👌 Not sure where to start with Blur to be honest, they have done so much diverse stuff over a long career, might as well go for Darren, but please try another if you hate it. Most people love 13 or the album that is also called Blur most... But Modern life is rubbish has a lot of classics.
such a cool reaction video! i really liked how your dad made some good assumptions and interpretations. it felt like a genuine cool moment between father and son and now i have to introduce radiohead to my dad lol
interesting and entertaining commentary! i clicked on the video because of my interest in radiohead, but was very pleasantly surprised by both of your insights. i look forward to future videos.
Oh, and a small thing to point out that i just noticed after watching through--Faust is (obviously) mentioned in Faust Arp, but Mephistopheles is the devil that tempts Faust in Goethe's work. So there's a thematic through-line relating to giving into temptation and sin ("You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking") / ("Throw your keys in the bowl") etc... Pretty fascinating stuff.
This is one of the best reactions I’ve ever seen. These guys are in my top 2. Neck and neck with Tool. I love the way you guys let the music marinate and discuss it afterwards. Also love the back ‘n’ forth banter between father and son and the different perspectives of different generations. This is a great starter but OK Computer is probably my favorite album start to finish from any band. Not sure if dad would agree due to a lot of cynicism and depressing lyrics, lol. ✌️
Your dad's comments like the classical music refrain or House of Cards like cards collapsing or Videotape's e-drums like rocks pounding down on someone...Fantastic!
1:00:39 - For "Videotape" - I've listened to this album since it came out and the meaning struck me 2 nights ago. You know how whenever people have near-death experiences, they say moments of their life flashes before their eyes - that's the videotape. He's saying this on a beautiful, perfect day with someone that's the centre of his world, that he's going to take a snapshot from that day, and that person and this day will be on his videotape because that person means that much to him and that day, maybe amongst many difficult ones, was just beautiful and perfect. It's bittersweet, but IMO, definitely not a suicide note. Just means whenever he dies, he wants this person to know this for when he can't tell them himself, maybe because he'll be unable when the time comes. It's somewhat uplifting, for Radiohead. But still squeezes on your heart when you listen to it.
I can say a lot about this album, but to keep it simple, that bridge/breakdown right before the climax in "All I Need," is probably my favorite piece of music Radiohead has written..xo
Good sir, you have a great father. Stay close. I’m incredibly close with my pops. My favorite track is Reckoner. I feel you will appreciate it more when you get older.
enjoyable reaction! if i had to think of a band that shares a spiritual connection with Radiohead, I'd probably say R.EM.. Michael Stipe even gave Thom some advice when he was dealing with fame, on the basis of which they wrote one of their most popular songs (How to disappear completely) - he told him to tell himself, when things are bad, "I'm not here.. this isn't happening" - and last time thom yorke was on Colbert, stephen asked him about his favorite R.E.M. song. I dont know if Thom and Michael are actual friends but.. it seems like it. They probably owe something to bands like Husker Du as well. I'm not like a massive Radiohead fan, where I'd know everything about them, but that's just my impression. thanks for a great reaction again! :D
“Is the female singer always in the band” Yes🗿 Btw I love that your dad approaches most of these songs from a lyrical standpoint, I feel most people dwell on radioheads instrumentation (because it’s so strong). It’s nice to see a little change in that regard.
A lot of the mega bands from England went to private schools , the Rolling Stones , pink Floyd, Radiohead, . I think where Radiohead are coming from is a sense of being outwith . Of nit fitting in . An awkwardness in life .
absolutely loving the trend of guys listening to music with their dads on youtube, keep it up! also, you should listen to Congratulations by MGMT, great album :)
Super video! Your father is great and he is completely on point! For me "In Rainbows" (one of my favorite albums in life) is about a very problematic moment in Thom's marriage life. Most of songs have clues about that (betrayals, love affairs, ends, farewells,,,), like he was very uncomfortable in his "married skin" as your father so cleverly pointed out many times. Congrats!
I love it. Great review in general. Much appreciated the 15th step reference :-) … and the use of depressing to describe the experience of listening had me laughing. I’m around dad’s age but grew up in a musically expressive home. This album is genius.
I find that wild. Stuff like "moth who just wants to share your light" / "animal trapped in your hot car" to me is just fantastic you rarely hear Thom write those kind of love lyrics. They really get me emotional especially when the song climaxes. The only track I would personally say is anywhere near weak is Faust Arp which even still isn't a song i skip coz it's short anyway lol
He asked what bands were similar to Radiohead about 10 minutes in and to be frank, there just isnt any. Also yeah faust and Mephistopheles are both folk lore characters in the same story so it ties faust arp in with videotape
The current season of the dissect podcast is doing In Rainbows song by song. It provides a ton of context and musical and lyrical analysis I highly recommend!
I’m often perceived as a Pollyanna… but Radiohead fuels my soul. I have so many shadows but I will always look to the light. Radiohead has been there for me for two and a half decades. In my darkest moments, Thom’s voice has soothed me so. Thank you for everything.
I love this. My dad use to sit with me and spin records. I don't know what happened, my kids don't have the patience to sit through a single song. I recommend digging into portishead and massive attack if you haven't already.
well ill tell you right now if your kids use tiktok that is why their attention span isnt all there....... i will look into that and add it to the list thankyou for the recommendation
