Mr, Hoang loves Max very much and if he is not contacting Mr. PHU IT MIGHT BE THAT there is something bad going on with Mr. Hoang and he doesn't want to give fake fault to Mr. PHU ND Max. He might feel that Max is better off with his friend because he knows that Mr. PHU will love and take real good care of him. . Love hurts at times and letting go for the sake of the one you love, can tear the hell out of your heart.
