I think moving forward Dion’s argument should be : That Life is funny but he had a hard time with the plot and he was hopeful that justice would be served in the end, but was very disappointed that it wasn’t . Just don’t come in so strong Lack.

Comedians can be a tough crowd, so when you guys are dyinggg and wiping away tears, it is absolutely infectious! Also, when you and Chaz have side whispers and try to stifle your laughter, it reminds me of two high school boys acting up in the back of the classroom. Love this podcast! 😆🤣 Also, I like Dion but instead of trying to over explain and digging himself into a hole, he should have just said he doesn't like the movie because the injustice/sad part of it overshadows the comedy for him. Sometimes, being succinct is ok. Now, everyone go draw sad Dion. #iykyk #EasyToDrawDion 😆✍🏻

I cant agree with Dion because we make movies about people dieing with cancer... people dieing on boats... people dieing in all sorts of tragic moments or for Tragic reasons but try and show "despite the tragedy, this was there LIFE". The movie 50/50 with Joshua Gordon Levitt is an example of a tragic comedy. Though I do agree they didnt really tackle with sincerity the tragic nature of the movie LIFE like they did in other tragic comedies
@GreatNinjaJordan

Its a problem that arises because people aren't allowed to say they just don't like something but they know its a good movie. When you just aren't a fan you have to find a reason because you can't just go meh wasn't for me especially when it comes to black culture

In the beginning of the Martin talk, if we wanna make a case for where the decline happened , i’d say it started at Death at a Funeral or Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins(I liked them personally). Alot of stars in those movies pretty much carried the pace of the funny in the movie. Saying his decline started around Life or even Blue Streak is nuts!! Even Big Momma House was pretty good lol

@28:20 I feel Dion on his sentiments about Life. Don't get me wrong, it's a classic that is a hella funny, but the fact that they got actual life and was doing all them years is kind of sad. That one scene where it transitions from the 40's to the 70s and they show a montage of everybody dying, that part gets me. And don't get me started on Claude's girl leaving him for Melvin. This junk DO be happening to black people to this day. I feel like black people have just been programmed to laugh at our pain/struggle so we can just make it through to the next day.

Dion is basically saying that most of the funny scenes don’t move the plot and really don’t have much to do with the plot. Which is true. Also, Life at best, has a bittersweet ending. They were never exonerated, and had to fake their own deaths to finally get free at the tail end of their lives. I love the movie, but I get why someone would hate the movie. I’d also say Life isn’t one of my favorite comedies, but it’s definitely one of my favorite movies/dark comedies.

Dion had a point, he just didn't do a good job explaining his point. He's basically saying the movie is too depressing, to be considered a true comedy. Even though other comedies have sadness in it, they are not depressing and have so many sad parts throughout the movie. Like they kept bringing up the movie, Friday, but Friday didn't have any sad moments the whole movie. Every scene except for the end, tried to make you laugh

28:00 the point that we actually remember the full plot of the movie even the dark parts of it and still laughed makes the movie successful. There’s no argument about little sketches because technically they all added to it. The cornbread scene showed the power dynamic of where they were, the pie scene was Martin moving to rebellion after realizing he’s done nothing wrong and still ended up being punished, the bed room scene where he argued with ray was him feeling left out. All of the major funny scenes in life detailed life and made it comedic.

The very mention of recasting for a tv show has fans iffy. 😭 poor Elijah Wood - I was a fan so personally I wanted to watch the movie for him, not Macaulay. I admit I’m biased on that one.

deon was was digging too deep with his life analysis. Because we find humor in the worst cases in many of comedy films. The scene in Scary movie 2 where the priest goes to the possessed girl and the mom was like, " child won't even let me touch her" and the priest is like "yeah, I use candy" lol...now obviously nothing is funny about predators luring kids with candy but that line was hilarious. Or the scene in Django when the KKK ran up but couldn't see directly through the holes in the hoodie LMAO!! Now I'm sure we can agree that part was funny, however, there is nothing, absolutely nothing funny about the KKK and their mission. So to me, Deon was just knit picking. 🙄

Dion is right. It is a tragic situation that currently happens and it takes from the overall enjoyment of the movie. I’m young, but my folks in the 70’s and not far removed from the racist going on’s of rural Georgia. He might not have been able to articulate his point well (mostly cuz yall jumped him) but it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have a point or that it’s not valid. It ain’t the funniest comedy of all time for people who feel the tragedy of it more than the comedy, and that’s okay.
