Great thinking by the engineers to have the air input in such a handy location; quick and easy. Good job, Steve.

What surprises me is that None of them (tractors) ever seem to have trailer brake control test/tow connection points at the same place as the main air test point though, always have to go back to the trailer itself. I'm sure that those points could be fitted and made to work, either automatically when connected or via some kind of lever that swaps between normal and tow air mode (with Tow air mode position preventing the rig from being able to drive if no external air present to prevent a "no trailer brake" incident). Bonus there would be that then the tractors brakes could also possibly be controlled by the wrecker if the system is designed properly. Even better if there was also a plug for the lighting control connection to the wrecker as well (@Steve, I seem to recall that some Buses's do have such a connection?). If the manufacturers did that, then in most situations you wouldn't need to fiddle with the trailer connections and could then just use short jumper hoses / cables.

Would be really cool to see the reverse hooking up when you drop off somewhere so taking all the kit off and how you your truck “back together” as such. Probably self explanatory but still interesting to see

thanks for the video Steve, it's always interesting to watch. I do have a couple questions, how do you handle a twin steer truck? I have only towed one and I had to chain up the 2nd steer axle, is that the same over there? and I notice you don't run safety chains (or secondary chains), I assume there is no requirement for it? thank you
@HeavyRecoverywithSteve
@HeavyRecoverywithSteve 2 года назад
Hi Adam , if truck loaded like a 32t 8 wheeler for instance with twin steer front axles i would lift the 1st steer axle off the road and keep 2nd steer axle in contact with the road with key in ignition steer lock off. This will reduce the weight i am lifting and reduce the strain on the loaded tipper chassis. No legal requirement to run safety chains over here. Thanks very much for watching channel.

Yeah, failed PCIs are super common on these euro6 DAFs, especially as they are continue to age, and the most common time for them to fail being in the summer (when it`s warm). If the engine cut out randomly, and there were either loads of wierd faults on the dash, and the DRLs or the crankcase ventilation come on when you turn on theignition, it`s a surefire way to know the PCI is dead... If the DAF dealer was nearby, and assuming he had broken down at a more convenient location, he could have let theenginecool down, and he would have eventually been able to start the engine back up and continue on (though the engine would just cut out after a while, once the PCI would reach that critical temperature again).
@HeavyRecoverywithSteve
@HeavyRecoverywithSteve Год назад
Hi Andre thanks for watching, your spot on with your comments mate , the Daf drove into the workshop once it cooled down.
@andreanastacio9548
@andreanastacio9548 Год назад
@@HeavyRecoverywithSteve well, to be fair I`ve been working at a DAF dealership for a couple of years now, so I`m aware of many of the common faults on these and the facelifted F7 trucks (like yours)... Over the summer we saw them drop like flies, with over half a dozen failing in a single week... As a bit of (hopefully) handy information, if an F7 DAF XF or CF cuts out and refuses to start, or starts but has a terrible idle that is super rough or super low, there is a decent chance the VTG actuator has failed, which is another super common point of failure (they fail on the euro6 too, but ether the failure rate on the newer trucks is much higher, or thay have already been replaced on most of the older trucks). The variable geometry veins in the turbo basicly get stuck in a position where the exhaust is too restricted to rev up, or even idle. It can also be a sign that the turbo itself is on the way out if the technician finds the mechanism to have an overly stiff point in it`s movement...

Nice work. How is it to drive as a combo without any braking assistance on the towed load? Are there any weight limits?
@HeavyRecoverywithSteve
@HeavyRecoverywithSteve 2 года назад
Hi Rob thanks for watching, not sure on limits, once towed a 96 tonne mobile crane on fixed bar , but crane driver was able to run engine so he able to steer and brake with me. That biggest thing i have towed and never again lol.

Great looking HGV recovery truck, very well kitted out with highly experienced operator. Good job it wasn't a woman driver who had to reverse that long load into the parking bay! 😁 . That other DAF driver geezer with the pony tail was about as helpful as a flat tyre with the reverse maneuver!. How can anyone be camera shy in this day & age, where cameras are fitted almost everywhere, what an absolute pussy! 🤔 lol! 😄. Cheers for an interesting video, meticulously filmed & a super job done 🙂.
