a couple weeks ago i was at kumoricon and i cosplayed stella from this movie to compete in the cosplay contest, i was thinking that at best like two or three people would recognize me but i kept getting stopped every other minute by people who told me about how much they love interstella and daft punk and how much everything meant to them and it made me so so happy that there are still a lot of people out there that love the movie just as much as i do this one person walked up to me and said that it meant so much to them to see it being cosplayed and that i made them really happy, and another told me that his family was super into the movie and he was so surprised to see me and that his daughter had always planned on cosplaying her and seeing me made her want to do it case in point i should bring stella to more cons haha, shes a lot to wear with her facepaint and the wig i made for her is huge so its also hard to wear so i can only wear her for a few hours at a time but whenever i do its always sooo worth it to see peoples reactions and make a few people happy

Interstella 5555 was honestly, absolutely incredible! The animation is actually pretty good for its time, the storyline is fascinating, and of course, Daft Punk's music is spot on. I love this film a lot, but I feel like a lot of people don't really talk about it (or really acknowledge it for that matter). Thank you for not being one of those people. (Fun Fact: This film actually introduced me to Matsumoto Leiji and his animating style AND Daft Punk, and was the first Daft Punk album I ever listened to. I also discovered the fascinating way they sampled older artist's music and how they shaped different parts and sounds to create awesome tracks. Discovery is now my favorite Daft Punk album and I literally play it every day.)

I agree; it really is inspiring how fresh this movie (featurette?) still is! Believe it or not, I only learned about this album/movie by cruising RU-vid just 2 years ago! And the only part I recognized was 'One More Time', from late-night MTV re-runs! This is exactly why it's such a shame that concept-albums (and bands, period) are almost entirely a thing of the past. Things like this are a perfect representation of how multiple art-forms can come together to create something transcendent! Great video! =)

Excellent discussion. As an older anime fan, when I first watched Interstella, it was a step back into my personal past with anime. The iconic designs of the characters and simple techniques tell an amazing story. Shemp's large eyes and big pupils indicate an innocence and soft kindness, while the villain's small, beady eyes indicate a narrow view of the world, seeing everyone as nothing but tools to accomplish his goals. These are simple designs that help tell a wordless story. This is missing in a LOT of not just anime, but animation and even comics today. Awesome job. Interstella deserves all the love and attention it gets, and probably more. Keep up the good work.

I remember seeing the music videos on tv over and over again, but i was so used to our tv culture being years behind the west that i didn't realise it was brand new, and not decades old. I guess those music videos featuring Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor didn't help either. Anyway its a dear memory from my childhood, which is pretty on the nose isn't it?

The glory years of the early 2000s! It was thanks to Toonami, I got a clear picture of who Daft Punk was right alongside fellow mystery artists Gorillaz. They both have this sense of anonymity and that's okay. It's what makes them and their respective works enjoyable!

So often artists decide how to place/decide (how to place) their tracks into an album. I had No Indra they made this into a movie/anime before it was an album. I've always loved this album and felt like this movie was a ment to be and I didn't know why, I was so surprised when you revealed at the beginning that it was a ment to be… You said four five, is that how it's supposed to be said? I just watched 'breaking the habbit' today funny you referenced it at the end there, I noticed immediately that that was made by the same guy who did the Kill Bill scene But damn thanks, I had no idea about alot of this thanks so much for all the work you put into this video, not just the edit, but the research I learned alot about one of my favourite albums and band. So thanks for your dedication to producing a good video/project. So glad I watched this. I may not watch more of your vids but I will sub and that ding ding bell. Well done thanks again.

This movie is the reason it bothers me so much that the original version of “One More Time” was replaced with a single edit on a lot of music streaming services; instead of ending abruptly when the band is kidnapped, it just fades out. That might sound better in a playlist of assorted songs from different artists, but it messes with the flow of the album.

Early Japanese Anime was entering American television, and becoming highly popular, since the late '60's with shows such as Prince Planet, 8 Man, Marine Boy, Kimba the White Lion and Speed Racer. This was due to the quirky development of the UHF stations in many cities, which desperately needed shows for presentation, and along comes American International with lots of different packages of Japanese cartoons and movies to show. Those early Japanese cartoons were a hit with the kids (including me). Although their target audience was primarily children's television, still, it was Japanese Anime nonetheless. Popularity would increase, albeit very slowly in the '70's as American animation dominated Saturday morning television shows, but some Japanese cartoons found their way into the daily lineups for after school television. Starblazers, the Americanized version of Space Battleship Yamato, would thrive on the popularity of Science Fiction in the period just after Star Wars. Then, several years later, Robotech would hit in '85, as many of the former elementary school 8 Man and Speed Racer fans were then entering college. It was this timeline that paved the way for the popularity of Akira, Macross and Record of Lodoss War. It was a unique slice of American, and World History, with definitive sociological effects, including a seeming preference for Japanese animation styles, with American animation styles disappearing. Most American animation is actually done in South Korea nowadays. I think the fact that in Japan, Anime was seen as an art form and method of storytelling, while in America, animation was seen as the appetizer before the main feature in the cinemas, kind of like the warm up band at a rock concert, or primarily an advertising tool, used to sell products from Alka Seltzer to Corn Flakes and Pop Tarts on Saturday Mornings. Of course, that's why Saturday morning cartoons were developed. Children's programming to sell children's products to the baby boom generation. We got some gems from the era, but, animation was diminished in the American mind nonetheless. But, if you get a chance, there is some animation gold out there that is worth seeing, such as the hand-painted beauty of the very early Superman cartoons. And I don't have time to discuss the animation of Disney and some of the other studios. Right now I think I'll pop in Filmation's Flash Gordon, and then watch some Starblazers. I'll watch Record of Lodoss War later.

I absolutely love Interstella 5555 God I remember about 12 years ago taking mushrooms ad watching it all the way through twice then staring at the ceiling thinking about if that story was fact or fiction. If theres a galaxy where everyone looks like they do in the movie and all that. Eventually falling asleep next to my friend and his girlfriend on my shitty reclining couch type thing (kinda like a futon). Man those were the days.

Interstella is both my favorite album and movie of all time. Discovery is easily THE album of the 2000's, setting the bar for an entire new century of sound. I highly believe that if Discovery had not become popular as it did, 2000's music would sound a lot different than it does now. Almost 20 years later, it is still their best work, and that is saying A LOT compared to their other albums, but it just shows how immortalized Interstella has become. Everyone should watch this move AT LEAST once!
